My kids went to Birmingham HS. Things have really changed in the valley. Used to be some real nice street rods. Most of the aerospace industry is gone, along with me. (I thought the QB always got the cheerleader. heh heh)

My older brother bought his first car when he got back from USMC/ Viet Nam in 69. Bought a brand new Malibu SS396 that screamed. He probably should have hung on to it. Similar to this one but my brothers was maroon with the black stripes. Needless to say he had no problems getting a date: upload_2015-12-12_9-55-35.jpg

first truck was a 1950 3/4t ford pu w/a 9' bed. had a little encounter w/a Camaro (his fault) around 1970. Replaced the rear end w/a 1 1/2 t rear (had to carry 2 different spares! That truck was awesome. I had a John Birch Society bumper sticker with a picture of McAurther and painted an orange thunderbolt underneath it! Kicked ass!

1986 Pontiac 6000 STE. Was my grandfather's car (he bought it new). Got it in 1993 with less than 20000 miles. Quickly started having issues.
    Muffler fell off
    Steering column broke
Loads of electrical and electronic problems
Fuel gauge was a digital bar, which stopped working so I never knew how much gas I actually had.
Locks would unlock and lock by themselves while I was driving it.
    I hated that car.
I used to leave it unlocked with the key on the dash hoping someone would steal it. No one did, and this was while there was a rash of car thefts on my campus. Junked it for $100.
Here's a couple pics stolen off the internet. Look at that ridiculous number of buttons on the dash.

I was age 14 and six months, it was a crappy GM midsize covered in Bondo (a Buick something maybe?) with a 350 V8, a 3-speed on the floor and a bad timing gear and chain. Purchase price $1, but had to pay the state $0.04 in sales tax on it too. State of Wisconsin would not accept cash for the sales tax so I wrote them a check for "ZERO AND 04/100 DOLLARS". Got the title in my name too, which didn't make sense since I wasn't old enough to sign off the title when I sold it. Guy at the State amazed that a 14-yo had his own checking account but I told him that I needed it for my business and that made him speechless with disbelief but he could find no rule that he could apply to prevent me from titling the car.

Put a timing gear and chain in it and got it running, and waited for the title to come in from the state then sold it to a college student for $500. I think the parts were about $50 or so and I borrowed a Chilton's manual from the library to tell me how to do the work.

Experience taught me that I could make a much better hourly wage by engaging in entrepreneurial activities on my own account instead of working for minimum wage.

1979 oldsmobile delta 88. had a 350 (160hp, 260 torque) and a 3 speed auto. always got 12 mpg. my parents got it for me in 1989 and paid $2000. it was owned by an old lady who only used it for going to the grocery store and to church on sundays. it had 50k original miles.

funny story... to force passengers in the rear seat to use the seatbelts, I would apply armor-all to the rear seat (it was leather) and then take turns very sharply. when 2-3 friends were slammed up against one side of the car, they would then agree to wear the seat belts :)

Oh shit. At least I know I didn't have the worst car here!! LOL
88 Volvo sedan. Baby blue all the way! I drove that thing like I was a rallycross driver!!

I remember we had this railroad crossing that was about four feet above street level, making for an awesome ramp! Needless to say, this road was almost too narrow for two cars. Me and a couple buddies of mine decided it was a good idea to hit it going about 40-50. Bottomed out, sparks everywhere, sounded like a full demolition derby crammed into 2 seconds. To this day, I have NO idea how that thing didn't crap out on me, or even how I'm alive!! LOL not too long after that, my old man bought me a black 99 Tacoma pre runner. As fate would have it, I flipped that thing the next year. LOL

First truck was a 1991 Toyota SR5 Extended cab 4x4. It was a great truck. Got me through high school and college. Head gasket went and was replaced by local guy. An old teacher told me about the head gasket recall which Toyota came good for even though they didn't do any of the work. Replaced the entire rear end shortly before I sold it. Nothing like responding to a fire call in four wheel drive because the rear end piled up on the way. Miss that truck for all the places 'off the map' it took me and always brought me back. 1957 Ford Fairlane, $250. Bought it because it had cool aluminum valve covers.

My friends and I would put all our change together to buy a couple of gallons of gas. (32 cents a gallon).

Wow, you guys are taking me back...first car I drove was my Dad's 1964 Chevy Impala station wagon with a 327, 4BBL and dual exhaust. Drove the doors off that thing, but had a lot of fun. First new car was a 1976 Olds Cutlass that I ordered...and many more since then. I saw that '05 GTO...still have my '04 Impulse Blue GTO 5.7L 6 speed, blue leather interior...yes it is quick. Fun thread...makes me feel old...in a good way...

1991 Chevy S-10, short box, 2wd, 5 spd for $2500 with 110k. This was in 1994 when I was 13. Paint was already flaking off and the fuel gauge didn't work. It had the manual vent down by your feet... A real gem.
