Couple weeks ago I got myself Unholy by Hondo mount for my iPad which I am using as a GPS. The Hondo Mount attaches to the AC vent ring. HVAC ring does have a slight amount of play in it but from a Wheeling trip I just went on I really couldn't be happier with the setup

The iPad is wifi-only so I'm using a Dual XGPS160 as my GPS receiver and I connect to that via Bluetooth off the iPad.

I mostly use Gaia for my route planning and downloading offline maps.

Just thought I'd share in case anybody was looking for a cell phone or tablet mount.

does the extra GPS work well in very remote areas ? got a link for the mount ? and how about RAM mounts ? was it in consideration when you look for a tablet mount ?
last but not least do you have a GAIA subscription or just the free app ?

Drop down menu gives you some options.

The Dual picked up satellite under tree cover within seconds.

Gaia basic is free, offline maps require subscription which is well worth it.

I'd bet it does, since it has both WAAS and GLONASS correction signals. More correction signals generally equals faster and better location.

I never thought about an GPS receiver making a non-3G iPad capable of receiving location info. Hell of a good idea!

How do you like it? I’ve been really considering it, but I can’t figure out if I’d like it in that spot. Also, can’t decide if I want to kill the usage of that vent.

Any chance of a full review?

I had the same concern about losing functionality of that vent - the way the vent or I guess I should say the way I've mounted it, the vent is still functional in a sense that it still blows cold air on me....just around the stomach area.

I can take a few more pictures probably either later tonight or tomorrow to kind of show you what the vent angle is.

The only real issue that I thought I would have with it is actually the truck's fault. If you went out there and you kind of grabbed onto your HVAC ring you would see that it doesn't necessarily fit tightly in the trim, it kind of moves around a little bit. Well after wheel in and doing some rocky trails - honestly I got to say it didn't really affect me or bother me , I didn't really notice it more focused on the trail. But I can try to snag a video as well of the HVAC ring to kind of give you guys an idea what I'm talking about.

the good thing with the Hondo Mount is if you're not happy I think they give you 15 days to just send it back to them and you get your money back.

I use a ram mount bolted to the top center of the dashboard. The tablet is just above the screen for the radio. No vents are blocked and in easy view and reach.

My dash bounces around enough wheeling....I don't need more weight in the center to help it out more.

IMO I'm still getting air out, and its 110+ here and doesnt affect me much at all. Just got back from a little local exploring and still (personally) no complaints.

I want this vent mount but I’m worried about long term damage to the vent ring from the torquing the phone rocking back-and-forth from hitting potholes since I’m in the Northeast

I haven't seen any dash bouncing on mine. I've driven on various dirt roads and trails in Utah with no issue. The tablet itself occasionally vibrates slightly but besides that it's solid. The tablet is also secured to the top of the dash so it has two points where the whole thing is fixed to.

The whole center of my dash moves, vibrates, etc. Doesnt seem there is jack for support. I do a lot more high speed, wash/washboard driving - probably why I see more of an issue there than you might.

    Great write up here!

I wanted to post some input that I have experienced after purchasing to use with my iPad for nav. The new design of the vent mount that does not wrap the whole vent moves just the slightest bit due to the Tundra vent design. I did reach out to them before ordering to see if this was a known issue and it is due to the differences between the Tacoma and Tundra design.

If your vents have the slightest bit of play in them (completely normal) then this mount will magnify it as soon as any weight is added. I loved this write up and was hoping this would be a solution for mounting my iPad but unfortunately it did not work for me.

    Let the searching continue.
