I learned about “clear flood mode” from watching The Motor Oil Geek and it made me wonder about trucks: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/ZF-SPAKtzrY

I searched the forum, owners manual, and maintenance guide and didn’t find anything about using “clear flood mode” to prime the horizontal oil filter. Interested to hear what y’all think.

That’s dumb. No different than just starting the vehicle to “ prime the filter”. Which is unnecessary.

Do you own a 3rd gen? We have a horizontal spin-on filter, not a canister-style cartridge filter.

With an empty filter, it makes sense to me that there will be moment of no oil flow while the air is purged.

The difference is that the engine is simply turning over and priming the oil system without the stress of combustion. Some 3rd gens do seem to have sensitive main bearings...

    Not enough....
I have only ever done this after completely rebuilding an engine on my old GTO (LS based engine) to get things moving. But that was a full breakdown, new bearings, cam etc. The couple of seconds it takes to fill that filter housing is not going to cause any issues.

If you’re that worried about it pull the ignition fuse and let the starter spin the engine to build some pressure before you fire it. I do all my oil changes and never worry about it.

No, no, NO! You're not getting it! Toyota engineers are all morons. The internet and forums put them to shame! It's ridiculous that they didn't see this obvious flaw!

In my fleets we do not pre fill or prime filters unless its a fresh rebuild.

Back in the day we even ran some tests we ran a group pre filled filters, and group we didn't no discernable difference in oil samples. We have million and millions of dollars invested in these fleets , we have tried many things OPS systems ect. The only thing that ever made much difference was when we switched to full synthetic's , and a lot of that or us was increased drain interval.

I’ve owned lots of cars with vertical or horizontal spin on filters. I’ve never tried to pre oil the filters. When doing an oil change, the engine is generally warm, which means it was just running. The time it takes to do the oil change is 30-45 mins tops including the tire rotation. A restart after that little amount of time will find the metal parts of the motor with oil still everywhere oil goes. The few seconds it takes for the oil pressure to build up will be of no consequence. This is one of those internet things that people theorize up and believe in. If you believe, pre-oil away. But worry not, it doesn’t really make any difference.

I appreciate the input and experience feedback.

I will soon start doing my own oil changes and just wanted to confirm if this was necessary or a best practice.

Cheers and a have nice weekend.

Pre-filling the oil filter is totally unnecessary... and messy, but other that than it won't hurt anything. So have at it.

I have ALWAYS prefilled the filter when doing an oil change. I find that the media soaks up quite a bit of oil before it actually starts to fill up. Even with the sideways filter, you can still keep a good bit of oil in it. It may not be necessary, but it makes me feel better knowing the filter will be full and flowing that much faster at the initial startup.

Where does the extra 2 quarts remain? Maybe some in the oil cooler? Some in the turbos? Doesn't seem like that would be 2 its though. Where did you get that stat, please?[/QUOTE]

This is why I made it a point to say "it may not be necessary, but *I* feel better by doing it.". Certainly no harm will come from it. Win-win for me.
