Just picked up an 05 Tundra with the 4.7 this weekend. It needs a new engine due to a thrown rod.
    Question:
I have found a VERY low mileage 2006 2uz-fe for an excellent price - ($1500 for 65K miles)
For what I paid for the truck I have room in the budget - just thought this was a good price.
I know that both 05 and 06 are the VVTi engines and in theory the 06 should bolt right in,
however I was wondering if this is the case. According to the specs the 05 is 282 hp and the 06 is rated at 271 hp. Am I missing something here? Is this (obviously) due to the ecm program?
Will I be giving up the hp if I go with the 06?
Which engine out of what (toyota, lexus, jdm or usa) should I be looking for?

Side note: I physically have not seen the damage to the engine - only the fact that the starter will not crank the engine and I can't turn it by moving the crank with a breaker bar. I plan on deeper diagnosis this weekend but I am assuming the worst case scenario and expecting to replace the engine. Previous owner said it threw a rod and broke the timing belt according to the guy he had look at it...or it could be something more simple(hopefully) and that's the story he was giving his wife....because he said he was going to look at new trucks this week..??

    Thanks

Imho, I really don't think you would notice a missing dozen hp. Sounds like a good way to get an inexpensive ride. You can always flip it. Just my 2cents

The motor MAY not be bad. If it snapped the belt maybe it just got out of alignment. I'm not the expert on that though. A guy a few threads back did his timing belt and had something similar.

Saw that post on the timing belt. I'm hoping something crazy happened like the starter just hung and won't disengage from the ring gear... Hey I got lucky when I found the tundra for $500 so who knows. Maybe lightning will strike twice!

There is no difference. When the 05 came put it was erroneously called 280hp, later the true horsepower figure of 271

That swap should be fine, you're giving up nothing.

I believe the change in horsepower was a change in testing standards. The 05 numbers were just engine with no accessories (power steering, alternator etc.) in 06 they went to the more standard way of testing that is the engine how it comes with everything attached. So no actual difference in the engines. (I’m sure it’s more complicated than that, but when I bought my 05 I looked into all this, and this was what I found)

05 was different HP testing. all the 06 models in just about ever brand dropped due to new standards my 06 avalon is 268 hp. but the 05 thats identical was 280

Well that figures. I was hoping for a little extra hp. At least I got lucky with the buy!

I’d jump on that low mile ‘06 hampster wheel if it’s from a reputable seller and the rest of the truck is in good condition. For around $2500 and a weekend of quality time screwing and unscrewing (might have that backwards?) you’d have a heck of truck.
