I have been trying to find a set of 16” OEM wheels for dedicated winter tires that won’t require spacers or break the bank. I had hoped some new “take-off” wheels might work, but I don’t think there is anything in the 16” size that won’t require spacers to look right. There don’t appear to be too many options. As far as I can tell the only 16” OEM wheels that would work are the ones it came with (first pic) and maybe the ones I’m asking about down below.

IIRC, the 05-06 Tundras have a larger caliper than the earlier models and this could be an issue for some 16” OEM wheels out there. I’d really like to avoid making an expensive mistake and wanted to see if the knowledgeable folks here could help point me in the right direction.

I found these near me and reached out, but the owner states…..”these will not fit Tundra, Tacoma 4X4 only”. I haven’t been able to find any info that these wheels ever came on Tacomas, but I have found info suggesting they were OEM on Tundra and Sequoia.

Can anyone confirm these will fit on a 2006 Tundra? Also, if anyone can recommend any other Toyota wheel that will work in a 16” without spacers I’d appreciate it.

I'd be willing to bet those steel Tacoma wheels will fit. If it was me and the seller was close, I'd drive over and test fit one on the front axle. In fact, I'm looking for dedicated winter tires and wheels for my 2000 Tundra. If I saw as set of those with the right size tires, that's exactly what I would be doing.

FYI, Tundra WL calipers are a popular upgrade on Gen3 4Runners (my last vehicle). As I recall, the only OEM 16" wheels that didn't fit were these 6-spokes -- the rest were fine.

    Thanks for the replies.

The thread you linked to is good for seeing how different rims look, but from what I could tell I don't think there are many newer 16" wheels or they require spacers.

I believe the 2nd gen Taco wheels would require spacers.

Any of the wheels pictured in that thread that are 16” will fit the model it’s pictured on. Seemed helpful.

@tvpierce, I think they will likely fit too and I think your idea of test fitting is a good idea. I'm just not real sure the guy will let me since he is so sure they won't fit. He says they fit all tacos from 95 to current models. Now I know they have the same bolt pattern, but I don't know if that means they will fit all tacos.

Did your truck come OEM with 16” rims?

I understand that they will bolt on since they have the same bolt patern, but from what I could tell the newer 16" rims all have offsets in the +25 to +40 range and I believe this means they will require spacers since the offset on my rims is +15. Also most posts don't indicate if they needed spacers or not, so I just started looking for rims with a +15mm offset and have not found very many. I haven't looked into the 3rd gen 4runner wheels yet, but I guess I should. I think anything after about 2005 is gonna require a spacer or is larger than 16". But I know just enough to be dangerous and could be wrong about any or all of what I posted which is why I'm asking for help.

Not sure if you are only looking for 16" but I just had winter tires mounted on these 17" wheels and they fit great on my 06 4wd DC with a stock setup

Dead ringer for my 04 stock steelies, would they even have bothered making these in alternate offset/backspace/hub bore??

I doubt it, but I'd hate to find out the hard way. I think the 1st gen Tacos used the +15mm offset like the early Tundras and I believe they will fit based on what I've read. If I do a parts search it says it fits 06 Tundra. The 05 Tundra brochure shows them as standard on SR5's, but I think most of them were upgraded to the alloys in one of the value packages.

I sent the guy another email to see if he'd be willing to let me try mounting one, but he was really clear that these won't fit a Tundra and they are only for all Taco's from 95 to present. So I'll have to wait and see.

FYI: the exact wheel in the exact application you were asking about is posted in the thread I shared above.

Those are sharp. It would probably be easier to find a 17" wheel. The 4runner snowflake wheel uses a 17" with a +15 offset, but I haven't really considered going up in size because of all the things it would effect. Wouldn't using a 17" wheel and tire screw with a bunch of stuff like my spare being a different size, gearing, speedometer, etc.? IDK, honestly I'm fine with a 16" just having a hard time finding one.

From what I read before buying them it may make a slight difference in those things but not enough to be a big issue. I also bought tires on the smaller end to keep it as close as possible. Spare tire is the biggest problem, and I probably should have just bought 5 to begin with. Around here winter tires are on half the year anyways, so I would have one to rotate through the rotation for each set. I think plenty of people on here have gone with the 17" wheels though.

No. As long as the offset and backspacing allow the wheel to clear the caliper you're fine. 16" or 17" doesn't matter... what matters is the overall diameter of the tire. So a 17" wheel just needs a tire with a 1/2" smaller sidewall.

For instance here are the overall heights for tires that would be stock on our trucks:
    265/70-16 = 30.60”

    265/65-17 = 30.56

4/100th of an inch makes no difference. In fact, that's probably lower than the acceptable manufacturing tolerances.

So the fella selling the steel wheels I posted got back to me late yesterday afternoon. He is willing to let me test fit one today. I’m nearly 100% sure they will fit even with the WL calipers since they appear to have been OEM on SR5 Tundras from 00'-06' and Sequoias from 01'-07'. But I don't think there are a ton of these floating around since most of these rigs had the wheels upgraded to the alloys. I will be sure and update this thread with whatever I figure out.

Thanks everybody for all the help!

dunno if he’s running a spacer or not, but when i get off-road tires i might try to mount it to these.

I didnt see it mentioned, but if you get steel rims remember you will need 12 additional lug nuts. You cant swap your existing wheel nuts over.

I've always had good luck from Ebay. Most of the sellers will guarentee the wheel is free from repairs and will balance. Free shipping too.

These wheels do fit and clear the caliper on my 2006 DC 4X4 no problem. I got a pretty good deal on them too, $100 is a great price, IMO. The tires are in decent shape, but they are about 16 years old so I guess they will get recycled. No big deal since I had already purchased a new set of Nokian winter tires on their buy 3 get 1 free Black Friday sale.

I got pretty lucky timing wise since I needed something sooner rather than later. If I hadn't found these or something else soon, I was going to mount the new tires on the only set of wheels I already have, which would have been a pain.

Thanks for mentioning the steel wheel lugs. I saw a post awhile back about this issue and had forgotten all about it. Do you know if they are the same part number for all the early Toyota steel wheels and rigs or do they vary based on wheel and truck model?

Also, my 96’ Taco has snow tires on steel wheels too. I purchased the wheels from the tire shop who sold me snow tires like 20 years ago. Nobody mentioned this at the time and I have been using the regular lugs on it this whole time. They have clearly worked so far, but I wonder if they are supposed to have their own lugs too? Seems likely.

Is the torque spec the same with the steel wheels? Somewhere around here I read on 2007 and later Tundras the spec is like 145ish ft.lbs. for steel wheels.

    I would reccomend 24. :p:p

I have the steel wheels in your original post that the guy won't sell you. You have to get nuts without the acorn top so the stud pokes through. The center cap won't fit over the tall closed end nuts, some may not even fully seat if the material thickness of the steel is thinner than the alloys. When I had a bunch of thrashed nuts from a dipshit tire installers airgun I tried to get a few cheapos at the local parts store, but they only had the acorns but they had several different ones for my 04. I got one of each as I hadn't expected their to be more than 1, so I didn't know which would work. Some didn't seat, some had a different outer diameter. My stock nuts are 21mm. I didn't want mixmatched nuts that required fumbling with multiple tools. Make sure whatever you get matches your emergency lug wrench. Torque on the steelies is the same, or at least the 04-06 FSM doesn't spec a diff TQ for base steel, vs SR5 steel, vs alloys.
