So I bought my truck in Feb. it’s a CPO truck with a 12 month bumper to bumper and a 100k mike power train warranty. I took it in because it’s howling in windy conditions from the window seals. They ordered the parts and have me come back when they get them in and then tell me it’s not covered under any of the warranty. Does this sound right?

They also tell me the seals are 160 a piece and I can get them from Toyota of Cool Springs for 100 a piece.

I’m having trust issues here. What do y’all think?

Really depends on the dealership; some will kick out things like rubber trim and stuff like that as general wear and tear items like brake pads and tires......but I would try another local dealership if you can. Has the windshield been replaced previously? If so, you're probably out of luck. If its the factory OEM window, I think there could be a strong warranty case made.

As far as I know the windshield is factory. I haven’t had it replaced. It’s the seals around the driver and passenger side that’s causing the noise. Bumper to bumper seems like that’s everything down to lightbulbs.

I mean, bumper-to-bumper means (or should mean) just that. Bought my truck in March, and it has a 3-yr, 36K bumper-to-bumper warranty.

I asked what that covered, and he said "Everything, obviously notwithstanding rips/tears/etc."

I'd give 'em some crap on this one, respectfully; I'd make them prove it's not under warranty, and then I'd take my business elsewhere.

At Lexus we cover some of the most ridiculous stuff under warranty. Don't back down on this. A CPO warranty covers everything a factory warranty does. Seals are not "wear items" like break pads. Sounds like a manufacturing defect. You should be able to get this taken care of through your purchasing dealer, but if you have to definitely call Toyota corporate. If you're dealing with your salesperson, don't. Go to the service manager, and if they are not helping go to the general manager.

Well, I can't speak for everywhere, but when I bought my truck, I actually used window seals and such as an example; I had one go bad on my '04 F150 when I bought it and they gave me some crap over it. I told him about my experience with the window seals on my '04 F150, and weatherstripping (or whatever it's called) on my Saturn, and my sales rep's exact words were "if it's between/up to/including the front and rear bumpers, it's covered."

That's BS. Unless its brake pads and tires, the warranty should cover it unless you put your truck into extreme conditions.

Bumper to bumper should be just that.
A friend bought a F-150 and they wanted him to sign a 12-page bumper to bumper warranty. He asked the salesman why it is 12 pages; he didn't have time to read it all before signing...long story short the salesman says don't worry, it covers everything, so my friend crossed out every page and wrote "bumper to bumper; covers everything", he signed every page and had the sales manager and general manager sign each page.

Can you try a different dealership? Sounds like the one you brought it to is just looking to make a quick buck.

You would think that window molding shouldn’t and wouldn’t go bad in less than 3 years

I wonder if there is a difference between "noises your car may make" (just annoying noises due to regular wind noise caused by the aerodynamics of the vehicle) and noises caused by defective parts, as in this case where it was determined that defective seals had to be replaced to get rid of the noise. i.e., the claim is not the noise but the defective seals.

Thanks for all the input. I called Toyota care and they gave me the same song and dance and couldn’t answer the question of why it’s not covered, just said “that part isn’t covered”.

They said that they will refer it to the selling dealership (I went to one closer to my house) and to await their phone call about it.

It’s clearly a defective part. No way around that. I love my truck but if Toyota has simple things like window seals go out at 40k miles then I may be in for a rough ride I’m afraid.

I did tell them that I expect them to stand behind their product and their warranty. So I’m definitely gonna give them some crap over this one. Truth be told, I paid more money than other trucks with out a CPO warranty because I wanted the truck to be covered. So it’s kind of a kick in the nuts for them to just say “yeah the truck is under warranty but just not that part specifically.”

Then they tried to offer me a discount on the labor and I laughed at that. They are trying to charge me 165 a piece for those window seals and then 135 for an hour labor to do it. I can get the part from Cool Springs for 100 bucks a piece.

I must have exceeded the limit number for window roll ups something.

I’m pretty disappointed with this one. I’ll keep you guys updated.

Got a call from the selling dealership they said that they are not going to fix it. They said window seals are a wear and tear item and Toyota does not warranty them. I said “so you’re telling me that I buy a new 60k truck and I roll out of the parking lot, till my window down and back up and the weather stripping messes up that Toyota will not fix it?” She no shit said “Toyota will not fix that because it is a wear and tear item”. She then proceeded to get smart with me over the phone so instead of dropping cuss words I just hung up.

This is the craziest shit I’ve ever heard of.

These are the kind of people that make consumers hate dealerships. That is so frustrating to me since I work at a dealership.

We usually replace them under warranty no problem. Unless there’s signs of obvious tampering.

Man, I’ve probably replaced well over a hundred of those acrosss all our cars

I'm honestly blown away. I've had weatherstripping/window molding replaced on at least 3 vehicles I own, and never once have I ever gotten any crap over it.

So I did a bit of nosing around, and found this on Toyota's own site (https://www.toyotacertified.com/warranty). Unfortunately, soon as I saw the word 'Limited Comprehensive Warranty' I said "Ah sh*t" and it looks like they're covered here: (emphasis mine)

I still think it's kind of crap. I get that their @$$ is covered, but that list is one hell of a lot of stuff.

I bought the window seal kit and I’ll do a write up on it as I do it so for anyone else who gets screwed over like me, they’ll be able to do it themselves and cut the dealership techs out of money at least.

I have no understanding of these types of dealerships - they get paid on the warranty work. My buddy is general manager at a Toyota dealership and said they would be killing for this type of work right now. Warranty work pays....not wanting to do it means 1. They don’t need the work which I find hard to believe in this climate or 2. They’re just assholes. I vote for number 2

I'm confused about why you think the techs are at fault here, or need to be cut out of something. They might make 15% of what the dealerships labor rate is (if they are lucky), and have absolutely nothing to do with what can and can't be approved under warranty. Also, warranty pays ZERO to diagnose almost anything. There are very very few times you can get any diag time out of warranty work. Most warranty work ends up screwing the tech. As a matter of fact I just looked up what the labor time is on window trim and depending on what piece you are replacing it is from .2 (12 minutes) to .6 (36 minutes). When you replace yours see how long it takes and then remember the time they had to take to drive your truck and confirm the noise is included in those labor times.

It’s not so much punishing the Tech as it is the dealership. Bad management is at fault for this. I am under no obligation to pay them for a service that they would not cover under warranty. They don’t want to make a quick buck in this economy by covering a defective part then fine. If the dealership had honored the warranty then they would have gotten paid but I’m punishing the dealership by not paying them to have their techs fix an issue. Both the dealership and techs aren’t getting paid. If the management would have stepped up to do the right thing then everyone would have been happy.

I’m not out to punish techs, I’m out to punish the dealership. I never said anything about a tech being at fault for this.

@ATCinfantry "cut the dealership techs out of money at least." Were your words, so that's how I took it. It sucks that they were that way to you, and I'm glad you were able to do it yourself. Just remember when you see that labor rate that the tech sees very little of that money.

Ok. Fair enough. Never said they were at fault though. Toyota management is the reason they aren’t getting paid. So I cut all of them out of money.

I was a service advisor for a GM dealership after I got home from contracting in Afghanistan before I got on with the Federal Aviation Administration and I know how much they get and I’m sorry their managers cut them out of money but it is what it is. Either way it goes they ain’t gettin no money from me! LOL. Sorry bout it. I don’t have any heartburn over it.

time to become a pain. Everything that should be covered under warranty and might need looking at, I'd have them look at. one scheduled appt for each item. become "that guy" you paid for a warranty with the purchase price and even if the part isn't covered, to treat you like that is not acceptable.

Unless I’m mis-understanding something here, but don’t the techs get paid hourly by the dealership?

They get paid flag hours so if the book says a job takes 4 hours and it takes them 2 then they can start on the next job and get paid a bunch of hours for a little time. It’s an incisive to be a good tech.
