My gimicky senses are tingling. I guess if i were installing one, i'd do it after the cooler, because a cooler will still cool fluid under more pressure, and if it slows fluid flow, the fluid would spend more time in the cooler.

there are a couple of installation vids on youtube.

A little backstory on why I want to install it. Truck with 295K miles driving great and hoping to give to my son when he gets his license in a year. Recently, first time ever I experienced some rough shifting. ATF was a little low, so I topped it off and seem to run better. I went ahead and did a 4qt drain and fill also. Fluid is red but dirty. Truck is running great now. Embarrassed to say I stripped the plug so I am replacing the pan and will also install new ATF filter. I am planning on doing drain and fills to refresh ATF over time. I heard great things about Magnefine inline filter and think it would be good to install before I do ATF work to keep circulating fluid clean.

The instructions state for less than 5000miles install on cooler supply side. On more than 5000miles, install on cooler return line.

I believe that Ford required using Magnefine filters on some of there replacement transmissions. If not, then the warranty would be void.

I did installex Magnefine filters on my mother’s 2008 honda odyssey right after she bought it brand new from the dealer (on both the power steering and tranny). I cut one apart after about 100,000 miles. The filter media was fairly dark. There’s also a large magnet located inside of it. It’s just a plain old circular magnet, not a fancy rare high powered magnet though.

I recently swapped a different (used) transmission into my 2004. Before i installed it, i removed both the pan and torque converter. I left them to completely drain at all sorts of angles for a few days. I was going to install a Magnefine on both the tranny and power steering, but i had the wrong size (too small of barbs) of filters on my shelf.

Don’t be embarrassed about stripping the plug. You’re not the first on here and won’t be the last.

similarly be careful with the transfer case when you drain/fill if you’re 4WD. You conveniently left that out of your truck info ;)

Be sure to apply PB blaster and maybe heat to the pan screws. Many people have snapped those.

Does the magnetite filter have a bypass function? What happens if it captures a large amount of debris, enough to occlude the filter. Does the transmission starve for oil now? Not convinced I would want an inline filter on my transmission, the pickup screen / filter is responsible for that function.

Maybe there is maybe there isn’t, but don’t recollect seeing a bypass valve. Then again i didn’t specifically look for one. It was about 4 years ago that i cut my magnefine apart. There was enough filter media located inside of it that i think you’d be hard pressed to clog up. You’d stand a much greater chance on clogging up a standard issue engine oil filter.

The transmission pick up screen will screen out bigger chunks, while a magnefine will filter out the tiny shtuff. My thought is if my transmission starts dropping out enough large enough chucks of itself to block the fluid flow to a magnefine filter, then i got much bigger issues to worry about.

Ford rebranded magnefine filters as Motocraft filter to use in their vehicles. No doubt Furd did a fair amount of their own research before they used those filter.
