Looking to buy a used tundra and definitely prefer a manual transmission. I have been driving my 98 Tacoma for 12 years and is at 220000 and running fine but need a but more space. Found a 2003 tundra manual 5 speed sr5 4 door 4x4 with 135,000 on it and had its timing belt changed at 111,000. It is also slightly lifted with new tires. Wondering if I can expect the same kind of worry free ownership with regular maintenance as I did with the Tacoma and wether that price seems reasonably priced. Truck appears very well maintained

I think the manual transmission was only available with the 3.4 V6. 190hp and 220 torque does not sound like you'll get much truck use other than a couple bags of mulch from home depot in the bed. If you're dead set on a manual trans pickup there are probably better options in other brands. I think 99-02 Silverados had a manual trans with the 4.8L which is way more power than the 3.4.

Also, not sure your definition of "more space" but lots of posters on here comment the access cab has little functional space for humans that have graduated from elementary school. I myself went with a double cab for my three kids, plus dog, plus constantly unhappy wife, and everyone is very pleased with the front and back seat room.

Just need more leg room for longer trips and larger bed area for dogs. The truck will mainly be used for outdoor recreation like camping so does not need to be a work horse. My current Tacoma is a 4 cylinder single cab.

My 06 double cab with 120k on it was well under $18 when I purchased it about a year ago. For what it's worth I saw some pretty good deals on first gen sequoias when I was looking for my tundra. If I didn't want a bed I could have saved at least $4k and probably gotten leather.

I think it's the 5 speed manual that is pushing the price up on all of the tundras I am looking at.

It's a rare find and appears in exceptional condition. Really nice color combo too.
4x4 and 5 speed man trans :muscleflexing:

Still, its priced too high. I don't use KBB or anything else to judge what I think a vehicle is worth, I just examine the vehicle. If the frame isn't rusty and it is as clean as the rest of the car I wouldn't feel bad going into the 9.5k territory knowing it's a rare and functional truck. If the undercarriage isn't perfect then maybe 6-7k at best. By the way I believe you can supercharge that motor to gain 100hp and close to 100 torque.

To answer a few of your questions, that should be roomy enough for your needs. I used to cruise 2 to 3 hours with my boxer in the back of my access cab. It is every bit as trouble free as a Taco. Prices cannot be compared with a Tacoma though, although Tundra is bigger and stronger the Tacos hold value much better. That is the very reason I bought a Tundra, in 2008 I could not afford a 5 year old Tacoma at 25k+ but my Tundra was only 14k. Mine had 58k miles, auto trans and V8 which everybody was afraid of in 2008.

Honestly I think that's a big factor of why our trucks are so affordable. The scary V8 = gas burner logic hitting people hard during the recession dropped the pricing on these trucks significantly. The Tacoma was not affected even though it doesn't get better mileage, it just didn't have the stink of V8. When times got better the value didn't go up because by then these trucks were 10+ years old.

Sometimes perception is reality. Two of my buddies both bought used Tacos during the 2010-12 time range and both ended up selling within 2 years due to being underwhelmed. They liked my truck and ‘thought’ they were getting something better, but there is no comparison. Maybe 1-2 mpg better with a Taco, but you are cramped with the crappy shallow footwell pan not to mention the low powered engine.

I’m hoping our 1st Gen V8’s start to hit a resurgence in value due to rarity from rust. I’ve never owned a vehicle this many years and still see a future 3-5 years out which is even crazier.

I’d pass on the V6 even with the potential of SC even if it was under 6k asking. Plenty of DC here going for 7-9k where they were asking 12-14k last year. AC going for 4-9k. Private party both.

@Professional Hand Model in 2007 the woman I was dating and living with had an 07 Tacoma PreRunner. I liked it but it felt as cramped as a car, in fact the Camry she traded in felt roomier. I drove it frequently on an 80 mile trip to Temecula, when I got my truck I did the same route often and found that it was easier on gas than the Tacoma.

I bought a 2003 just over one year ago. It only had 95,000 on it, V8 4x4, tow package, timing belt and water pump already done, and was in spectacular shape. Really crazy good condition - and while I paid too much, probably, it was several thousand less than what you're looking at. As others have said, walk away.

    IMG_9658.jpg

As for space and stuff, I love my access cab. I had a few large (6ft plus) guys in the back and they seemed to have plenty of room (or they were being polite) but then I removed all the access cab seats to get more storage room, so it's not a problem I worry about much any more. Anyhow, they are pretty spacious from the few other extended cabs I've seen.

Edit: I just looked at the pictures from before I removed the seat, and it does seem smaller than I remember. I dunno. Anyhow, the seats are more than just a padded board against the rear wall.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but feel as though I have some insight to offer due to a similar circumstance and vehicle. I purchased my Tundra 2 years ago. It is a 2003 access cab 3.4l manual, 2wd. It had 130,000 miles on it when I bought it and was in exceptionally clean condition (elderly owned+garaged). I paid $8600 for it private party, and still believe I overpaid by +/- $600. I paid well over KBB, but my area has higher prices than national trends. Also, due to the demand in my market (Southern California), I was willing to pay more for a clean truck that was serviced by the dealer and cared for by the previous owner, and the competition was definitely fierce.

I have found that the 3.4l with the 5 speed is perfect for my needs. You can definitely feel how heavy the truck is, and going up inclines is a weakness of this engine+truck combo. The clutch feel and shifting can be cumbersome and it almost feels as if you are driving a big rig sometimes, especially if you lived in a developed area with city driving. However, I do not tow, and only use my truck for camping, transporting my moped, and general moving of furniture, etc. If your needs are similar, in that you only use the truck recreationally, I think the 3.4l + 5 speed combo is a great, reliable option. I would not buy a 3.4l automatic however due to not being able to control shift points and really maximizing the engine.

Everyone else has the right idea by encouraging you to walk away as that price is absurd. If you can find a similar 3.4l + 5 speed for $7-9k, only then would I consider purchasing it. And it would have to be exceptionally clean and low miles for that price. Good luck on your search, and feel free to ask my any questions about my truck, as we have such similar desires/uses for a truck like this.

The 4.0 is a pretty sweet v6. I think it's funny that they make almost as much power as my 06 with the 4.7. ah well my 4.7 probably sounds better haha.

Does the 4.0 make more hp than the non-vvti 4.7? I know it doesn't make as much torque

Both my buddies ended up buying new Tundras. One guy got a Rock Warrior (2012?) and complained about all the squeaks/creaks inside the cab. Haven’t seen him in a long time and not sure if he sold it. He was one of these new vehicle every couple years guys.

My other buddy just bought the new 2018 and a couple of road trips with him and he sounds like the whiners in 3rd Gen Section complaining about ‘technology’, ‘long antennas’, ‘mpg’, etc. hahahaha.

Dont get hung up on the manual so much. I'm the same exact way. I prefer a stick ten fold over a slushbox. But, that's what the other car is for! Get you a cheap, manual, play car. It's the only pic I have of them together, when I was doing my axle seals. It's a 91 taurus sho with a 5 spd. I overpaid for it at $1800. It's worth maybe $1000.

For me personally, that price is at minimum 30% beyond reasonable...but I don't advise other people based on price on unique vehicles, because sometimes that uniqueness is way more important to them than me. The 3.4 manual 4x4 is definitely unique, but there is nothing unique enough to justify the price to me. If it was a stock truck like that (no lift or wheels tires would be more valuable to me....as it is I wouldn't pay more than $10K) in that condition it would be worth $12K to me (that is what they are getting for 2003 Tacoma's with those same specs with that mileage and condition, and the 2003 Tundra is a much better more comfortable vehicle). You would be hard pressed to find a more reliable vehicle than a Toyota truck with a 3.4/R150F combination.
