Dirt Deeds injectors, Addco rear sway, AEM dry flow air filter, last ever set of Stan's Try-Y headers, Borla full custom exhaust, front level, wheel spacers, and lots of electronics.
Those of you have been following my threads know I've designed my modifications to increase low end torque and a quiet exhaust. Today is the dyno after some basic mods anybody can perform. Headers, air filter, injectors, and exhaust.

The headers that are installed are no longer available. Stan, who built these headers, has retired. That being said, my dyno numbers may not be 100% repeatable. All of this was done to be informational. To help others gauge whether bolt-ons are worth the budget. You will see respectable gains using JBA or Dirty Deeds 4-1 long tube headers. You will certainly see bigger gains at the top end using 4-1 headers. I'd love if other members with shorty headers or 4-1's can get to a dyno near them.

Looking at the dyno chart you can see I've reached my goals. Emphasizing low end torque using try-Y headers, a 2.5" single exhaust, and not much else. Peak increase of 5HP/6TQ is kind of weak for the cost of entry, but where we do most of our driving is the low end. Below 4,000 RPM you can see there are increases of almost 20HP/30TQ. This is where it counts. The truck is so much nicer to drive now, even at part throttle.

Today's dyno pull mods: (red HP/TQ lines)
Ambient temp 56*F, at 788ft above sea level in NW Georgia. 0 dyno correction factor.
Stan's Tri-Y headers (no longer available)
    Dirty Deeds 12 hole injectors
AEM drop in dry air filter
    2 x 2.5" high flow cats
    Custom y-pipe
    2.5" x 10" Borla resonator
    2.5" x 14" Borla sport muffler

October 19th dyno pull: (blue HP/TQ lines)
Ambient temp 72*F, same dyno at 788ft above sea level. 0 dyno correction factor.
AEM drop in dry air filter
    Dirty Deeds 12 hole injectors

i clicked on yer base line dyno link and see you put in some dirty deed injecters on. i’m planning on getting a early gen and wonder how these add to to your truck?? might get them if its worth it. some say it is and others are skeptical..

I didn't put them in expecting the moon but it did help with fuel mileage. Averaging about 15 city and 19 highway. My mileage has been going down since the headers and exhaust, hard to keep your foot out of it when it sounds so nice screaming. Don't know how much power that mod alone gave but the truck felt smoother running and seemed to help partial throttle driving.

thanks that is what i’ve read a smoother engine and better gas miles but some say gas miles stays equal but a different shift point on transmission feel. also read oside injectors sells them. this toy tech guy lord dan on hear says you can grab some off a coroola.

    vids not loaded?.

I've gots a supercharged Truck and have always wanted to do a Dyno test on it to actual see if the supercharger adds any hp. I did some personal 0-60mph drags and averaged about 8seconds which according to google was the 0-60mph times of stock NA trucks. :3

They're loaded but either need to be unlocked (default setting is private) or they're on the hold (youtube has a setting that holds videos for 24 hours before making viewable).

When you see manufacturers claims about adding horsepower, if you watch the detail they never say "adds 20 peak horsies". They say "adds 20 horsies" and that can be anywhere along the band. Roughly a 10% gain in low range is great.

Made public on youtube. Try it now, let me know if there are any issues. I'm not very youtube savvy.

I'm confused I don't see any green lines.

Do we know if injectors alone really helped?

They cant hook up a tach to the dyno? I guess 5252 rpm is @ 84 mph. Pretty impressive. How many $$ per hp/lb.ft.?

My bad. Edited post to say blue line.

Don't know how much of a power improvement the injectors did, they were installed prior to the base dyno.

Too much. Hahaha. Injectors, Hewitt Gen 1, air filter, headers, cats and exhaust... about $112 per tq and $166 per hp.

I've also seen graphs from manufacturers where the x axis begins at 4000 rpm and the curve looks great and their claims are amazing. But I never drive at those rpms. Why do they hide the 1200-3500 where these trucks do most of their bidness?

Thank you. I'm happy with how it turned out after the resonator was installed. When the engine is loaded or if you romp the throttle it gets a nice aggressive roar at a tolerable volume. Normal cruising it's as quiet as the stock exhaust.

its hard to get a slushbox to hold 3rd way down there. Id like to know what a dyno says im putting down when im holding the pedal as much as i can before it downshifts.

the down low gains are totally worth the price of admission. thats the most useable spot power-wise for a truck. 0-60 times are a decent way to gauge gains too. most trucks with the long tubes seem to put a solid 1 second or 1.5 second faster 0-60 time down

Keith’s daughters truck is around 6 seconds 0-60 with the JBA long tubes, 12 hole, and full exhaust. VF tuner is going to support the 4.7 vvti soon so more power should be doable once that’s out

Damn. Nearly 300 to the wheels is impressive and right about what I would expect. Hopefully I can dyno mine once I get everything installed for comparison. You may want to keep an eye out for the VFTuner coming soon for our trucks to push it to or over that 300whp mark

Guess I'm upgrading the exhaust after all. From what I read the biggest upgrade really does seem to be a full exhaust with long toobies. Christmas list it is

The stock manifolds are very restrictive. I'd be interested in seeing how even a shorty performs. Our exhausts are relatively free flowing and of a decent diameter stock. Not many ponies to be gained by a y-pipe and/or cat-back, just sound change.

If you just go with 4-1 headers Dirty Deeds does offer a bolt on solution. You can't modify your stock cats to mate to their long tubes but they sell a reasonably priced set of catted mid pipes to bolt to their headers and connect to the factory exhaust.

Only down side to headers on these engines is the increase in valve noise. I don't know if anybody has mentioned this in the forum. These motors are almost as noisy as an LS with headers. It's been about 15 years since I had an engine with long tubes on it, I had forgotten.

The thick factory manifold and heat shield really helped quiet that down. With the thin wall stainless headers you can hear a valve tick noise under load. But for the power increase I can ignore the occasional tapping.

yea thats unavoidable with the valve train design of our engines. the 3.4l is VERY ticky with headers since the stock crossover is dual wall. the headers are.. uh. it sounds loud lol

Interesting thread. I have been slowly getting things done on my truck and I have the 12 hole injectors. They don't really add power but make the truck run and drive better plus you get a small increase in mpg, worth the money and install time. From what I understand, the shorty headers don't really give any performance gains but do sound good. Long tubes are the way to go and either eliminate the cats or go with a high flow performance cat. Dirty Deeds full exhaust with long tubes is on my list and I should be able to seriously make that happen this summer.

You ever seen anyone take a 3.4 and instead of routing the the crossover pipe behind the block, do it under the vehicle?
