I am looking at a 2008 Tundra DC 4wd with the 5.7 L engine. It has the tow package but when I enter the VIN on the Toyota website its says the tow rating is only 5,000 lb It has the 4.1 rear diff with the 10.5" ring gear. Is that why the tow rating is so low?

One thing for sure is the gears, 410 vs 430. Lower the gearing the better towing ability. But that does seem low for the 5.7 engine.

All I can determine is they may have installed a class 3 hitch. Can't tell until i see it

I remember being asked this question, when I was looking for a 4runner and ended up looking at and buying the Tundra... I was asked what type of towing I was looking at doing, and I told them the max, just in case I ever needed it... so I would agree with you on the type class hitch installed at the time...

Doesn't sound like it actually has a factory tow package.

Do not buy a 4.10 truck. Very few are built without the tow package, somehow you found one

I believe you misread the website. My 2017 DC 4.6L 2WD with 3.9:1 rear differential has a tow rating of 6800 lbs.

Toyota typically gives the tow rating first in Kg, with pound rating in parenthesis. Check the owner manual. If you don't have one, I've included the link below.

I think I have a "failure to communicate" with "Randy in Boise".

I've already shown you that a 5000 pound tow rating on 2008 5.7L Tundra is ****tard stupid.

Then it does not have a 4.1 rear. No tundra from any year +07 came with a 4.1 rear and a tow package. Some information is either displaying generic or simply incorrect. Like JohnLakeman posted no 5.7 has that low of a tow rating regardless of the guts of the truck.
