Looking to get back in a truck but I have no experience with tundras. Would you consider a 2011 with 135k reliable and roughly how much is it worth in decent shape but not great. Prices seems to be all over the place now

    thanks

Depends on if was maintained, if it was and its not rusty 135k miles just a small fraction of its life. Some people have already gotten 1 mill miles out of them. Also as for prices I couldn't really say depends on where you are i.e west or east or south. Back in early 2019 for my area in Wa state 07-13 with 80k miles to 130k miles where $24k-$15k ($15k for DC and $18k for CM) in the 130k mile mark.

Rust is your biggest concern. 135k is nothing for that drivetrain. There should have been some big ticket maintenance items at 100k and 125k. If those have been performed, then I’d say it looks promising. If they have maintenance records, it’s clean underneath, and it has all the specs you want, go for it!

One other thing that tends to plague 2nd gen Tundras: the cam tower seep. In almost every case, it only seeps enough to wet the side(s) of the engine. It doesn’t burn or consume oil, and the dipstick usually reads the same. But because Toyota owners demand perfection, it is an issue for many. Personally, I think it’s a non-issue for most people, and I’m not sure I would want my engine torn apart and reassembled to correct it unless it was actually leaving oil spots on the driveway.

My '07, 75K has ZERO leaks, seeps or "other". All fluids, belts, hoses, changed a few years ago (60K). On second battery and third set of tires. Oil and filter changed every 3-5000 miles or once a year. Truck has been absolutely trouble free for 15 years.

i have a 2011 CM 2WD with 172,500 miles on it. It was a dealer loaner with 8400 miles on it when I bought it from the dealer in April 2011. I have had ZERO issues with it in 11 years except the valve cover seals to the spark plug tubes leak oil. There is no fix for this according to the dealers, and it isn't causing issues. Its usually noticeable when you pull the plug boots. I just clean the tubes out the best I can when changing the plugs. I'm in Texas so no issues with winter road salt or rust and have always followed the recommended maintenance intervals for oil, tranny and diff, and still happy with it. Out of all of the vehicles I've owned (over 40 years) this has been the most reliable I've owned and it tows anything I've needed to pull like a champ.

The only issue I did have was all 4 cats were stolen overnight in a hotel parking lot in January, but my go-to dealer got them replaced the same week. I immediately ordered a set of Valhalla Shield underbody protection plates and just recently installed them.

If the truck seems to be in good shape, see if you can get the maintenance records and CarFax.

As long as its got decent records, and had the 120k mile service, your probably good to go. If not budget for the 120k mile catch up, probably $1k. I've bought every Toyota or Lexus I've owned at 90k +. I just sold my LX470, which I drove from 180k-265k with minimal issues, and it was a '98. My current truck is a '12, which I bought without hesitation at 110k, as it is rust free, had good records, and a clean carfax. Those are the biggest ones for me. I had a dealer I trust do a full catch up on maintenance, and replaced a leaky water pump that I didn't catch when I looked it over. You will be looking at some yearly preventative maintenance as parts age out (depending on what kind of miles you put on it), but that's about it, and most of its stuff you want to upgrade anyway, or things that are inexpensive. You can always take it to a Toyota dealer and have them do a pre-purchase inspection for roughly $100-$150.
