    Hi all,
I'm a new 2012 Tundra SR5 owner with 60K miles, standard cab and having some fun upgrading modifications to my truck. My goal is to add as many MOD's as possible.
I know there are some simple MOD prewired things on my SR5 like back up camera, fog lamps, etc., but am hell bent on adding front and rear sonar parking sensors. I have ordered a new chrome bumper with the four holes and found the factory unused female three prong plug receptacle underneath next to the frame. I ordered the factory OEM wire harnesses and in the center of dash have the vehicle logo/sensor picture next the temp/mpg display. Additionally I ordered the sonar on/off four button dash mounted switch.
My question and forgive if it's covered already is has anyone else here tried to mod their SR5 and added sonar parking with success? It's getting expensive and that's ok as the 2nd generation standard cab I bought was not offered in a Limited model with parking sonar and I'm slowly doing all the MOD's myself. Loving my Tundra so far and any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm like you, even though mine was the SR5 with TSS package, it was missing alot of things.

I have had to add foglights, headlight levelers, rear back up cam and soon a headunit capable of navigation. But man, sonar?! You are taking it to a new level. I'd be curious if its all self-contained with the sonar module being the "brains" and not having to integrate into the truck itself.

Sounds like a true challenge, have not tried.

There are some aftermarket products that have been mentioned. Surely not as clean as oem.

There is an "ask the toyota mechanic" thread, maybe inquire there.

    Good Luck!

    Go big or go home.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility if you follow this thread for any damages incurred or money spent. I'm just a DIY guy that doesn't mind trying to work on his cars and try to save some $$$. This project at this writing is INCOMPLETE and am not 100% it will even work. It feels like I'm on the right track but time will tell. I'm aware there are after marking parking that maybe superoir to OEM but I like OEM.
I will try and update as time permits. I appreciate if you have additional info if there is a better way to make this MOD work. Also I do not have a upgraded monitor head unit. I just am trying to not back into trees, bolllards, etc.

Ok, here's what I know so far:

His post below is a COPY and PASTE:

"I've been working on the sonar install using factory parts. It is a little pricy but if you want a true factory setup then it is worth it. I have every thing hooked but but am having issue with the sensors. I bought some really cheap aftermarket sensors and only one seems to be working right. For the install you will need the Sonar switch(dash button)(84977-0C040), The sonar ECU (89340-34010)(located behind the glove box). Rear wire harness(82165-0C020), front wire harnesses (one for each side, LH one has 3 wires, RH has 6wires)(82114-0C020 and 82113-0C020) If you have the information display you'll need to replace it with the one made for the sonar. The best way to figure out if your has it or not is to remove it and take the back off. It should have LED's and a small speaker behind the right side of it, the correct one is (83290-0C100). I had to replace one of the two main wire bundles in the dash (82142-0C020). Its a little bit of work to do. If you have a good wire diagram you might be able to just add the missing wires. And of course you need the sensors and retainers. I finally tracked down a full wire diagram of this system and it looks like the harness from the back of the truck to the engine compartment does have all the wires. Thats why I'm thinking my failed sensors are just that and not a wiring problem. I'm going to try and get a few more sensors and try them out. I just hate paying the Toyota dealers prices for them. I'll follow up with anything I figure out."

    END OF COPY/PASTE

I think he has a pretty good starting point to do a OEM radar parking sensor upgrade. He doesn't list his type of Tundra, so it will require a little detective work to make sure this will work for your Tundra. This is what I've done so far:

    1. Because my used 2012 Tundra SR5 regular cab had REAR chrome bumper dents I ordered an after market new chrome bumper with all the top layered plastic trim attached WITH predrilled sonar parking assist holes from EBAY: carpartswholesale for $330. delivered with tax.
From an OEM source it would have been nearly double the price.

    2. Ordered an OEM 84977-0c090 Sonar MPG TEMP combo switch $100.

    3. I think I found the sonar ECU Computer ASSY Clearance Warning under the dash. Trim was fairly easy to remove under the dash.
If you need OEM 89340-34010 $60-$100 EBAY or new about $180.
    4. Back to the bumper... I think I am prewired with a three prong female connector next to the right side of the main frame, passenger side. Camera prewire was the to the left side of frame and worked perfectly when I added a camera earlier.
Toyota OEM rear wire harness, from mentioned prewire plug to bumper sensors is: 82165-0c020 google it. Special order is under $100. delivered. I went through a Toyo dealership.

    5. Sensors: haven't ordered. OEM are ridiculously expensive, most likely I'll try used/junkyard but might have to bite the bullet.

    6. Last but not least. My Tundra came with prewired/installed parking icon located up in the middle of my dash next to right side of the temp/clock/mpg red colored gage. If you need to order an OEM 83290-0c0100 Under a $100.

Sorry to wake up an old thread, but did you or anyone figure out how to retrofit OEM parking sensors?

My Sequoia has the sensors, they are too sensitive, start beeping 3 or more feet away and go solid over two feet away to me it's useless and I leave them off. FWIW

Yeah that's my problem with most parking sensors... I don't need help when I'm 3 feet away because that I can see. I need help squeezing into tight spots where clearance is less than one foot. I'd really want all the resolution in 1-12 inches from the corners of the truck.
