2016 Limited for $36k or new TRD Off-Road for $46k?

I have been dead set on getting a 2020 Tundra and not really entertaining a used one. However last night I came across a 2016 Limited w/ 28500 miles. Its silver with the 20 inch wheels, grey leather, bed liner, and side steps. The drivers seat shows a little wear. Its priced at $36k while the new Cement TRD-OffRoad Limited one down the street is listed at $46k. So, for 10k less would you get the slightly used one with less bells and whistles or the new one? I drive to work and back about 12 miles each way, coach baseball, play golf, etc. Won't spend a ton of time in it.

For those that traded up, is the CarPlay, proximity key, push button, extra USB's worth 10k?

Maybe one thing to consider is the power train warranty. You can make your own determination about the cam tower leaks and it’s impact on your decision to buy used over new. One thing I love about my 2016 is the “standard” cruise control. My wife has a 2017 RAV4 with the sonar bs and I can’t stand it. Just my personal preference.

Yes, buy the new one and spend the 10k for the following reasons:

1: But what you want once or you'll end up buying twice
2: Interest rates on used vehicles are higher than new
    3: Peace of mind
4: You buy used, you're buying someone else's problems
5: Buyers remorse is a bitch
6: If you're going on payments, 10k is really not that big of a difference if you consider the interest will be higher on used
7: Resale on a vehicle you bought new is better
8: Street credibility of a new rig especially a TRD is boss
9: Nothing better than the smell of brand new
10: Lastly, money comes and goes in life. But you can't buy time. And everyone is on borrowed time. So if you have your health and you been blessed to afford it, do it while you can or else someone else will spend your cash when you're gone.

It’s not just the value of the options for 10k more, there’s 28.5k miles under warranty you’ll get plus resale value higher down the road. Also, if taking a loan, interest can be lower on a new vehicle versus used. Having a warranty would give you leverage against a lemon or problem vehicle. The Apple car play made a big difference for me considering buying 2020.

2016 is a great year so nothing wrong there if it has the options you want. You can disable the adaptive cruise on the newer models simply holding in the cruise button. I love the adaptive cruise on the highway with mixed traffic. Love the parking sensors and blind spot monitoring. The LED headlights provide great visibility and the LED running lights are attractive and highly visible.

Some things to consider as requested.

Oh I know but that's the going rate it seems! Since not much has changed with these I was looking at the 28,000 miles more than the age. The resale is a big part of the appeal.

Resale is great, maybe negotiate down a few $k, 32-34k range would be great.
End of month always better for negotiating.

I like my 2016. Have had zero issues. Quiet engine at idle. Mine had 40k when I bought it 2 years ago. You will pay 10k more and the resale on the newer truck but it’s a wash IMO especially if you don’t do a lot of miles. I put LED lights on mine, you will want that... 36k is a bit high IMO. Talk them down or have them throw in the platinum warranty. but that being said, if you want that new car smell...

If you're paying cash, save $10,000 and go Previously-Owned. Even if you're not paying cash...save $10K.
Was in the same situation in August 2018 in purchasing a 2015 SR5 with 20,000 miles.
    No regrets.

I do agree with my Tundra brethren about checking the 2016 for cam tower leaks. Mine if fine; ensure that 2016 is also.

In this case I would say the 2016 limited is priced high. I got my 2016 limited in early 2018 with 18k mileage for around 37k. Unless you can talk them down to 30k I would go new. Don’t know your financial situation, but I would keep looking if you decide to go used. I love my 2016 limited by the way, it is a great truck. I don’t need all the fancy new features.

The number one rule for me has always been that if you’re looking for a used vehicle don’t go to a Ford dealer and buy Anything but a Ford , same for GM , Chrysler , Toyota , etc etc . I’ve always felt that the previous owner must have had such a rotten experience with it that they even switched brands .

    Trying not to mod it
Everybody else raises good points for both rigs. I went from a couple of vehicles that had proximity keys, push button, and remote starts, and I do miss those features. I despise apple products and hated android auto, so that is not a plus in my book. I also have crap luck buying used, so I would go new, but not without trying to get the price down. Just my opinion though.

One other thing I didn't see mentioned is that the 2016 truck has an external/additional cooler for the transmission that the new truck will not have. Toyota took them out of the trucks starting in the 2019 model year and stated that the transmission still maintained proper cooling in some pretty solid testing. There are threads on it here, and even members that have retrofit an additional cooler. For me the lack of the cooler is a moot point, as I trust the test the engineers did and I won't tow heavy or often enough to worry.

Hey, what is your problem man?????? I came in here to see what truck he was going to buy and now I am leaving thinking about all my decisions in life!!!! This is a Tundra forum not a "PROCESSES YOUR LIFE" forum....Damn!!!!

But in all Seriousness Hostage81 does bring up very good points. You should still be able to get 4.25% or lower on the 2016 as long as you have 700+ on your credit score, you just have to play a little hard ball. Most dealerships are holding at least half a point on you. Ask how I know????? I work at a dealership. The only other thing about the 2016 is that they are solid trucks with very little issues according to people on this forum.

    Sorry for the sermon lol

I once gambled on a used H2 Hummer with about 15k mileage and I learned a hard lesson. And that rig was top dollar back then. Now mind you it was GM, so I should have known better.

Thanks for the info by the way. I didn't know the dealership holds half a point.

Believe it or not, the banks up where I am are hosing people between 6-8 percent for used vehicles.

Since you're in the industry, do you think prices are going up or down given this mass hysteria on the news. I don't want to use the word here or people will bail out of this forum and hoard more toilet paper. Maybe it's a good time to buy now if business is down which I assume is down especially if one is paying cash. Thoughts ?

If you have less than 36,000 miles, can't he purchase the Toyota extended warrantee? The cost is MUCH less that $10,000 and would cover him.

Nope. It’s three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Basically, if you want an EW/VSA from Toyota and don’t want to buy on the day of your vehicle purchase, you have until your bumper-to-bumper expires to purchase. Unless something has changed since I bought mine?

I am no financial wizard, but if you can sit on the sideline and wait a little bit, it could pay off. At the end of the day, if you find a truck and deal your happy with, pull the damn trigger.

Thanks so much for all the replies. This forum is awesome! The 2016 was sold to this dealer using the KBB service so it makes me wonder why someone unloaded it. I have the Carfax and it’s clean. Cam tower issues maybe...

We have a credit union at work so I can get 2.99 for 60 or 72 months. I have a 800+ credit score so I will negotiate that at the dealer as well. My plan is cash down and finance the rest. Just not sure how much.

I’m leaning new because it’s exactly what I want. I would want to replace headlights on 2016 which I’m happy mambo mentioned up above. I’ll start the negotiation on new and see what I can get then fall back to the used market if needed.

Good rates for that kind of term. Don’t be afraid to create a little competition for this dealer, even if it’s fake. Competition keeps everyone honest:). Good luck and have fun.

Most Dealers buy at least half of the cars that they sell used and no longer can we trust that they are trade-ins there so......

Don’t be ‘payment poor’ and have buyer’s remorse. Don’t buy what you don’t want and have buyer’s remorse, either. Depends on your overall financial situation. I chose lease [and put money down] to lower my payment but then did a lease buyout in 36th-month (last month). So happy I now own my 2017 Limited 4x4 CrewMax.

The used Toyota Truck market is brutal in Utah. I got new 19 new for 34k used were more money. i didn't get things like tech package etc. just a TRD OR SR5 with the first package ( bigger gas tank, aluminum wheels upgraded shocks skid plate ) I was interested in a PRO . Coming from several new loaded Toyota trucks and a new Raptor. I put 3k miles on it. I'm changing the wheels and shocks so that upgrade was a waste. I got Kings extended travel lift so I have still not reached the money i would have spent on a pro but have a better suspension. The pro does have better seats and stereo but i don't really care that much about the seats. I paid it off when I purchased it, so that upgrades I get are the only ongoing cost. In the past I would buy a fully loaded car and basically proceed to replace modify all the parts that made it "loaded". Having owned almost 50 cars i would say you get a kinda numbed out feeling towards any car you daily drive after 3 months.

    phi482,

I am one for sticking with a plan.

When I decided on a Tundra, I researched and chose exactly what was non-negotiable for me, what I could live with or without, and I knew what I wanted to pay and how I wanted to finance it.

Sounds like you planned too- for a 2020 equipped with TRD Off Road, etc.. just stick to your plan.

Any way you slice it, you’re going to be paying somewhere around $40k for a truck. Get the one you wanted and planned for.

    it works.
