The bed is steel. You have seen a composite bed right? They are plastic

The Gen 3 redesign with the composite bed started with 2022 +.
As @Hbjeff stated, your 2017 has a steel bed.
Being your truck is a 2017 what does reading that the 2021 beds are different have to do with anything, even know they aren't?

In fairness the cap on top of the bedrail is plastic

I did read this on the Tacoma and not knowing about the tundra was just asking
    Appreciate the hospitality

    Here’s the article :

“To use a composite bed? Every single Tacoma made since 2005 has a composite bed. Toyota was the first to do that. Also, a composite bed doesn’t require more frame support actually it would be less….. Toyota’s SMC (sheet mold composite) is actually SO STRONG that it a large part of the FRAME SECTION of the Lexus LFA Supercar. before you spew hate on this site get your facts correct.”

For years I thought my 2106 had a composite bed. The salesman said it was, and I never questioned it until finally it got a gouge through what turned out to be spray-on coated steel. LOL ... Maybe sales guy had it confused with a Tacoma.

I had a 2004 Ford Sporttrac and it had a composite bed so I guess Toyota was not the first.

I never trust what a sales person says. They normally don't know doo doo and most dangerous when they think they do.

Were those unibodys though since they were just a ford explorer?

Bed was separate from the cab so I guess not.
