hello all, just purchased a 2017 Tundra SR5 with 66k miles, double cab 4x4 , first Tundra , first Toyota. Simple post really , was just curious as to what some of you would consider "Must Haves" for Tundra owners. Be it performance , maintenance , things to watch out for , or just something that looks cool or is just a good addition to the truck. Itll be my daily driver here in AZ.

I know everyone has their own preferences , but im looking forward to having this a long time and want to take care of it as best i can. Any advice , tips , or tricks would be greatly appreciated! Will post a picture soon. Thanks for your time , happy holidays.

The drivers door key lock will unlock all the doors. To unlock the drivers door turn it to unlock once the others turn it again it took me 6 years to figure that out LOL..

get the maintenance up to date. Your truck age and miles, change all fluids for sure.

You will appreciate desert does it front seat jackers, low cost and makes the sitting position much more comfy.

If your truck does not have led headlights, they are an amazing upgrade for the money. Just get the TRD factory leds and use the Ihacker harness. Amazing bang for the buck.

Dirty deeds exhaust if nice, HP and torque improvement and there are different muffler sizes from quiet to loud.

    None....
    I have SR5.
    Must haves
    1. Oil changes every 5k
    2. Axle fluids every 50k
    3. Trans fluid every 60k
    4. With age of your truck you might want to also change brake fluid and antifreeze and power steering fluid.
I like my truck stock only added Clazzio seat cover and Cobra 4k dash cam.

I'm not nearly as mod crazy as a lot of people, mostly just 'cuz I'd rather go surfing than turn wrenches.

That being said, a couple of things I've done to my '19 I got a year ago that I really like are:

Tonneau cover - I've almost always tun camper shells on my previous truck and the tonneau is like the best of both worlds now. I still have the security to lock up surfboards or whatever, but still have use of the open bed to haul things that would've been too tall for the shell.
Full Bedrug - Sooo nice and cushy on my old skater's knees if I need to crawl around in the bed, and things stay where you put them.
Racks - I have to have racks for hauling SUP's, surfboards, etc. I got Elevate racks that are one of very few options available to run in conjunction with a trifold tonneau.
Power to the bed - I wired a 12v receptacle w/USB & voltmeter direct to the battery, constant hot. I plug in a portable shower to rinse off after surfing, very handy just inside the tailgate.
Bed lighting - LED strip lights on 3 sides under the tonneau rails, switch just inside the tailgate... SO helpful.

IMG_7540.png I bought a 2014 SR5 double cab about a year ago. As mentioned above, get your maintenance up to date. I’ll list what I’ve done in a year.
    - all fluids replaced (front and rear diff, transfer case, trans fluid, oil change, coolant)
    - replaced front rotors and pads, serviced rears
    - oil sprayed the truck twice, first time was day after I picked it up in Dec22’, second time was in middle of summer 2023
    - used tonneau cover installed
    - start x remote starter installed
    - found some KO2’s online brand new private sale, 18” tundra steel rims that I powder coated black
    - changed every halogen bulb to LED (license plate, interior, bed light, etc)
    - TRD Pro LED headlights w Ihacker harness
    - TRD pro front grill swap
    - I skipped the dirty deeds exhaust and did my own setup, couldn’t justify $2000 for an exhaust system no matter how beautiful it may look or sound. I did a custom Y pipe into a single canister muffler, into stock tail pipe. I did find a DD resonator and installed it though.. sounds great and I did it all for $650

I think that’s it lol I want tow mirrors now.. but haven’t really looked into it too much

    Merry Christmas!

Why the oil at 5K - non synthetic? Even book says 10K with synthetic (but dealer and other mechanics still want to change it at 5K - am I missing something?)

Thats a loaded question. There are probably 1000 pages of opinions spread across the 5.7 V8 forums (2nd gen + 2.5 gen) about oil weight, brand, and frequency of changes.
