Some people like them. Some people's engines throw a main bearing at 20-40k miles and require a rebuild. Some people don't like olives. Eh. Lots of people point to the reliable longevity of the 5.7L as a reason to retain them and I personally agree, especially if the truck is paid off. Very little tech upgrades from a 2018 to 2023 you can't get in the interior with a simple headunit radio swap.

I'd keep the 18 and wait and see if all the kinks are worked out, if so the get a late 24 or 25.

Composite bed, no pocket stake holes, smaller interior, so forth... but aesthetics actually isn't one of my complaints about it personally. A small lift kit and wheels make the truck pop, but I also dig modern looks. My 2.5gen definitely has the classic truck styling.

I like them, concerned about longevity of the TTV6. I'm not selling mine to buy one, but would certainly consider one if I needed to replace mine for an unforeseen reason. The real turnoff for me is the amount of computer intrusion into the driving experience. I'm OK with the helpful nannies like adaptive cruise or ABS. But some of the perimeter warning stuff just goes overboard. You used to have to actually know how to drive a vehicle. Might just daily my 2000 if my 2019 is gone.

I'd buy a Ram if I needed new. I won't touch the new Tundra.

Supercharge your 2018. Supposed to feel like a completely new truck.

Is this your first time here? lol The only other things that are more hotly debated on here are anything to do with oil changes and transmission (fluid and/or cooler)

But to play by the rules and actually answer your question, I love the 3rd gens. I would have turned my lease (2.5 gen) on one if I could have leased it for roughly the same price. I ended up buying my lease out for cheaper than leasing a new one.

I would request you to post this same post in the 3rd gen section though so you can compare the answers from 2.5 gen and 3rd gen. Both parties are going to be very biased.

Buy the new one, but keep the old 2018 so you will still have something to drive when the new one is out of warranty and dead with a 14k+ repair estimate:thumbsup:

My truck has pocket stake holes? Didn't really know that, or care really, since I put a topper on right away.

Yup, trim the plastic and there they are, on the 2.5gen. I'm not old enough to put on a topper tho!

Good to know in case I ever need to start a landscaping business. ;)

Never really understood the old guy topper thing though. I am old, but have had one on every truck I've owned for the last 40+ years. Everybody"s different, but I have never seen the usefullness of a tonneau, rack or naked bed. I need one for a lot of reasons, but none more important than my dogs. YMMV

Toppers are great for any age and I really like the Softtopper as well. As for the headache rack on my truck, it keeps the high dollar rear window from getting broken, offers some rollover protection, allows me to stab a convertible hitch extender in both the front and rear hitch in the upright position and easily transport steel, lumber, pipe, etc in lengths in excess of 24' without a trailer, and lastly on a hot day I can leave the rear window open and the cab is still secure. So yeah. the right rack does come in handy sometimes.

    I have a 2018 like you.
How long have you owned the 2018 and is it your everyday vehicle?
My opinion is based on these factors.

I beg your pardon, I've had shells on most of my trucks going back as early as the '78 Datsun pickup I had in High School.

Camper shell, nice and comfy with pillows and blankets, drive-in theaters, and girls with questionable morals... :bananadance::rolleyes: Ohhhh yyeeaahh

It ain't an old man thing if you ain't an old man. That being said, I put a tonneau on the new one 'cuz it's getting too hard to crawl around in the back with a topper on now. :rofl:Plus there's no more drive ins.

It's closer to being paid for than a new Gen 3.
Life is glorious without a vehicle payment....

    ^^^^
the new V6 would be great if it proved durable and got better gas mileage- as per Toyota's plan and marketing.
Its too early to tell if its durable and most real life reports show mileage not much better than a V8.
They built a brand new Tundra - not one bolt the same - much of the design to meet EPA requirements.
The latest report I've seen from Car & Driver.
Not a truck expert by any means but their observations on mileage are interesting.
No one is buying these things for gas mileage - but I would have expected an improvement when they are used as trucks.
I can get 18 mpg with my 2018 Tundra when loaded down and used for hauling.

While its average fuel economy rose from 13 to 16 mpg after 10,000 miles,
    the Tundra's hybrid V-6 still guzzles gas like it's a V-8.

Yup. Still love my '07. No car payment, low cost of insurance, and sub $16 vehicle property tax this year, means more $$$ for mods, house, boat, vacations, etc. I thought about getting a 3rd gen, but I'm not paying $60k or more for a vehicle. It's actually less expensive to buy a new 24' boat (at least in my case) than a new car these days.

I think time will tell on the new generation of Tundras, need to see how they do with longevity.
The earlier generations have the advantage of a proven track record.

I wouldn't touch a new Tundra. I don't like the appearance or the new unproven engine. Plus, if I'm going with a TT V6, I might as well buy a Ford.

Damn, you're right! Many new Tundra owners have experienced bearing issues and complete engine teardowns within the first year of ownership with the proven TTV6. No thanks!

I would hang on to your 2018. I had to sell mine a few years back for medical reasons and I miss it. If I was not holding off and willing to buy today I would not buy the New 3rd Gen Tundra because of the Engine issue and the issue has become known enough to spread across social media. The other reason is price I can get a 2500 Gas truck with the options I want/need from the Big 3 for cheaper than I can with a Tundra when I built a 24 Tundra. I know others on here who have had a great experience with the GM 6.6 Gas and for Ram I been borrowing a 2500 Ram 6.4 Hemi when I need a truck and that thing has been solid.

Yeah I really think Toyota made a mistake with only having one engine option when the big 3 still over a v8 option. They could have easily still offered the 5.7 as an option along side the v6 turbo and hybrid stuff.

Most of our work trucks are GMC 1500 and 2500’s. We’ve had multiple trucks with engine and transmission issues, they almost all develop suspension problems and they frequently have electric issues. We do use our trucks like trucks and they are not mall crawlers and most also have some off-road use.

I wouldn’t touch RAM for the same reasons, plus they depreciate very fast. Both these brands are built like disposable trucks to 100K. The only reason why we don’t get stuck in the field all the time is my company usually sells them right around 80K before they completely bite the dust.

You also won’t get your money back like with Toyota on trade in.

Believe it's just one for each. I used the same for both, but had to use the same one twice to upload for each one.
