I live up in a mountainous area and we have quite a bit of heavy fog.

I have been wondering if yellow fog lights would provide better visibility than the OEM ones. I'd like to get a set where I could just swap out the lights without any custom retrofitting.

Any thoughts on yellow vs clear?

    Thanks!

If you have OEM fog lights there are plenty of options out there that will drop right in, but the current best performer is the Diode Dynamics SS3. It will far outperform OEM. As for the yellow it will cut through the heavy fog better given the longer wavelength of light. Let me know if you have any other questions, or please feel free to give us a call!

You can have both, easily. When I installed the factory LED headlights, I replaced my halogen fog light bulbs with Alla Switchbacks LEDs. They match the color of the factory LEDs when in white, but turn them off or flash your brights and the lights switch over to yellow. I use the yellow in rain and fog and it help a great deal. And, these work well in the housings, light output and pattern is good, no one thinks I am blinding them. They were about 50 bucks I think. I have had them a good while, no issue and working as designed.

Went with the DD SS3 in yellow …in my area most people do the bright white fog …but wearing glasses when I drive at night I find the yellow is a huge aid in visibility

Question about this, so when you have your fog lights on and you turn your brights on, the fog lights to off. Then the foglights will come on again when you dim your lights. If I had my fog lights set to yellow, then turned on the brights and then went back to dim, would I need to reset the fog light back to yellow again?

Yep, I hit the high beams usually to switch between the two, or you can just turn them off and back on quickly. Flashing the brights with the stalk takes .0002 seconds, so super easy to quickly switch between the two colors.

Its been a great product for me. I thought about going with full LED fogs but they can get costly and then the time installing, but this was cost effective, much easier install, matches the factory LEDs in color 6k in white and 3k yellow, and they are a nice improvement over the halogen bulbs. All wins to me for 50 bucks.

If you have OEM factory LED fogs, Lamin-x makes decent tinted film coverings. They stick well and are durable.

By visibility do you mean other vehicles seeing you? SS3 Max almost outshine the factory halogen. Upgraded to LED and think it’s the perfect combination.

I got the DD SS3 from Colton at Hotshot. I went with the Amber lens since I’m up in the snow a lot. I love them and another added weird bonus on the winding roads around my house, the deer aren’t blinded by them and don’t freeze in the lights like they do with high beams.

Yellow fog lights outperform white or LED white fog lights in heavy fog, etc.. I've been on the Oregon Coast now for the last 3 years and installed an inexpensive pair of yellows on my '08 Tundra w/fairly good results.

Bought my '21 Tundra Pro last year which came w/the Rigid LED fogs (white light), and once the heavy fog hits they wash out just like the headlights. The cheap yellow ones in my '08 outperform the "high dollar" factory Rigid units in my new PRO. I'll be upgrading these once this vehicle becomes my daily driver.

My wife has a '22 Forester w/white halogen fogs, and I was just in that vehicle this past week in heavy fog, and those factory units washed out also.

I just ordered a pair of DD SS3 Yellow Pros from Colton ( @memario1214 ) at HotShot Offroad for the wife's Subi to replace her factory fogs. Colton has a history of great service, competitive pricing and a very good reputation here on the forum. So, if you're looking to upgrade to one of the higher end units, I'd recommend reaching out to him and seeing what he can do for you

I went from oem led fogs to DD SS3 ambers and there is a night and day difference. You will not be disappointed!

Never heard of these. I went with the yellow Diode Dynamics Elites, yellow with the amber backlit feature on my Tundra and the white on Dad's Tacoma. I really like the yellow when it's snowing (from what I've seen on video, haven't seen snow since I got mine) and do like them in the fog, which I have experienced. Curious as to the quality/longevity of the switchable ones. That's genius.

The Elites are not as bright as the other, SS3 I think they're called, but much better than stock for sure.

How do you achieve just fogs? Do you have it wired with a separate switch? OEM fogs only illuminate when the low beams are on.

I understand that they are serving the purpose that you have requested of them, and I tend to shy away from blasting other products as it's not really my M-O, but I also have to point some things out because folks will trickle into this thread and others for years to come I imagine. In order for a bulb of any kind to operate properly in a housing designed around a halogen bulb it would have to emit light uniformly from a precisely centered point inside of the housing. An LED bulb can't truly achieve this for multiple reasons. 1) It can't be located in the center of the housing as the LED chips need a surface on which to mount pushing it away from center, and 2) an LED chip can only produce light in a single direction. Having these elements out of place leads to increased glare/uplight and decreased performance where it's needed most. Whether the owner of these types of bulbs knows that they are causing more glare to oncoming traffic is up for debate, but in reality they are. Please (if you're able/willing) post pictures of just the fog lights on with the truck about 10ft away from a garage door and I can explain what I mean.

The concept of a plug-and-play switchback bulb further compounds these issues. In order to produce dual-color output a switchback bulb must contain 2 separate pairs of LED emitters. Neither of which are in the same place, and neither of which are occupying the true centerpoint of the housing.

    TL;DR -
I can't stop anyone from buying products that have a bevy of gimmicks from switchback functionality to promising 4 BILLION lumens of output, but I can at least educate those who are cruising around looking for information. The LED manufacturers will continue to produce and sell millions of these products to people who don't want to spend a lot of money or to people who simply want the different look when on. If the change in look is all that you're going for, know that you most likely are blinding your fellow motorist, but party on. I can't stop you.

If you want to upgrade your housings and get peak fog performance there's options like full replacements such as the Diode Dynamics SS3/Elite, Morimoto 4Banger, Rigid SAE.
If you want to keep the OEM look then upgrading the bulb to a higher wattage bulb like a Philips HIR bulb.
If you're dead set on a drop-in LED, want yellow, and actually want a performance improvement the closest bulb I have seen to actually representing the central emitter point is the Morimoto 2Stroke 3.0. It won't match a standalone housing's performance, but it'll definitely be a jump from OEM.
