This probably isn't the best first post to have on a forum, but here it goes... My wife works for Toyota Tsusho and I decided to go back to a Toyota when the lease on my Ram was up. I bought a 2019 Platinum Tundra in April 2019. I figured that if I was going to spend north of 40k, that I was going to get exactly what I wanted... A couple of months later, I noticed sluggish starting and even dying in the driveway. This came and went so I shrugged it off to bad fuel. Later, Toyota issued a recall for the fuel pump, so I scheduled to have it changed. My truck literally broke down on me the week that I had that scheduled. Now that it has been changed, my check engine light came on a couple of days later. I took it back to the dealer and they cleared the code. Today it came back on again and to say I'm upset is putting it mildly. I researched for a year before I purchased a tundra even though I know the fuel mileage is terrible. I didn't buy it for that. I bought it for the reliability and they hold value incredibly well. Has anyone else had similar issues with an affected vehicle? Do I have electrical bugs or is this becoming common? I've owned Chevy, Ram, and Toyota in recent years. This is pretty annoying for a Tundra with under 20k miles. Cause for concern? Lemon? Wait to see what the dealership says? Please share your thoguhts.

What was the code for? Did the dealer investigate the cause of the code before they cleared it? Is the new code the same as before?

My Platinum is a 2018 and no lemon here. Not sure what your issue is, but it would be helpful to know what code your Tundra is throwing. My guess is your fuel pump was replaced on a Friday afternoon?

At least you got yours fixed. I just brought mine in for service and the tech said the tundra next to mine has been sitting there for 75 days waiting for a fuel pump.

Toyota has a large scope fuel pump recall for these exact symptoms.

Ok, so I had the fuel pump replaced and I think it was a Thursday evening that I had to pay for a tow truck to drop it off, so yes I believe the work was done on a Friday. I picked it up and it ran great. It probably ran better than ever and runs fine right now. Then it threw a code, so I stopped by the dealership to have it scanned. They said the first time that the code was and I quote "Something with the EVAP system and nothing serious. If it does it again, just bring it in and we'll figure out what's causing it to come one." They cleared the code and I hadn't drove my truck this week. I haven't had it read for the second time. I'm dropping it off tomorrow morning. It drives absolutely fine, but as I'm sure many of you know, you can't use cruise control anytime that the check engine light is on. I'm not sure what year they started that. I'm not whining, I just want to share my experience so others will know about it and the outcome. It is pretty annoying when you spend roughly 50k on a truck and now I somewhat don't trust it. I know it's a simple fix and I understand the recall, but the check engine light coming back on again really pisses me off. I will give you guys an update as soon as I know something.

Go to the nearest auto parts store and have them read the code for you.

This is what I found today. I did clear them for now, but I’m dropping it at the dealer tomorrow.

Iam in Hamilton Ontario Canada and received fuel pump notice Jan 2020, also bought truck in April 2019, still runs okay but afraid to take anyplace if it happens to quit. 2 weeks ago Toyota Canada sent me notice fuel pumps were in stock at dealers call them and they would install, called dealer and was told they had not received any parts and would call when in scheduled appt for Aug 11/20 they called 4 days ago said they only received pumps for avalons and another car none for highlanders and tundra, now the waiting starts all over again, would not have expected this from Toyota

OK, so I am assuming that you got a P0441 code and P0446? I would start by checking your GAS CAP. Make sure there are no cracks and that it is secured with several "clicks".

    P0446 Symptoms
    • Check Engine Light is on
    • Slight decrease in fuel economy
    • Gasoline smell
    P0446 Causes
    • Missing fuel cap
    • Defective Evaporative Vent Valve
    • Defective or damaged fuel cap
    • Distorted, damaged or cracked Fuel Tank Filler Neck
    • Torn or punctured Evaporative system hose(s)
    • Defective Fuel Tank Sending Unit gasket or seal
    • Split or damaged Carbon Canister
    • Defective or damaged fuel tank

Also, why didn't Toyota pay for your tow? Your vehicle is less then 2 years old, thus, you are still covered by "TOYOTACARE", which provides FREE 24 hour roadside assistance and towing!

One half of all CELs in the world are caused by not tightening the gas cap. Prove me wrong. :)

I greatly appreciate the help. It's probably not the fuel cap. We checked that several times. I'm receiving a P0441 and P0445. No need to argue, gentlemen. I didn't have this issue before the fuel pump totally failed and it was replaced. I haven't tried to get reimbursed, but if you know who I should contact, that would be great. I didn't ask and assumed that was on me. I tried to upload the code from my phone, but it wouldn't let me. I may be able to link to my laptop now and upload them here. I haven't posted photos on this forum before. I know that sometimes they're difficult to post depending on the forum's format.

Just a guess, but to replace the fuel pump you drop the gas tank and to do that you have to disconnect the emissions related stuff like hoses, etc. I wouldn't doubt that it's just a line with a loose connection or something similar that was missed when reinstalling the tank.

Both codes are essentially pointing to the same thing. I would agree with @Azblue that the dealer didn't connect something correctly when replacing the fuel pump.

I appreciate the information. I dropped the truck off this morning and they said they would fix it and even asked if I would be waiting on it. I called at 4PM today for an update. The service advisor told me that they had just taken it back (good thing I didn't wait). I called for an update at 7PM to find out that all they could tell me was that it was assigned to a technician. The service advisor I had left for the day. I feel like I'm working with the wrong dealership. Considering that this is likely a simple issue, they're sure are riding the struggle bus. If they weren't going to actually work on it until today, I should have dropped it off tomorrow. I've never had this problem out of the big 3. I've had my vehicle at their dealership 3 times now. My patience are growing really thin. If this isn't resolved tomorrow, I'm going to consider other options once it is fixed.

    Welcome from NY.

Sorry to hear about all the issues, this is not normal for Toyota.
You said your wife works for Toyota Tsusho, can't she help? I would definitely contact Toyota customer service and open a file and also submit that tow bill to get your money back.
Good luck and hopefully this will be resolved quickly.

Probably the tech didn't get a line all the way on when installing the pump, or it got filled with fuel somehow like overfilling. or a wire pulled out of a connector.

They can smoke test the EVAP and find a leak. Dealer service writers hate comebacks.

I have a 2019 Tundra with 73k miles, and it does not qualify for the recall. But is having the same issues as the other ones recalled. My VIN does not qualify. I don't know what to do.

It was one of the first things I did, and they politely told me that there was nothing they could do. Since I was out of the warranty which is 60k or 5 years, it was basically at my own expense to replace it.

I've had this problem with *EVERY* vehicle I've owned from the Big 3. That's why I now own a Toyota. No, of course it doesn't mean you're immune to issues; and you can indeed have a great truck with a crappy dealership, or just plain issues at time. But statistically, overall one is far less likely to have issues, or the # of issues, that you'll have with any of the Big 3. We've owned 5 Toyotas thus far, and below is the list of issues we've had:

    - O2 sensor (2000 4Runner)
    - HVAC solenoid (2020 Tundra)

The list from ANY of the other vehicles I've owned is longer than the list of issues with ALL of my Toyotas, combined.

I am glad you have had a good experience with Toyota, and I will have a Toyota as long as I can. Most likely I will replace the fuel pump myself (hate dealers) and if possible just replace the small pump itself and keep as many original parts as possible.

Oh, agreed. I do like my dealer, so until my warranty runs out I'll have them do any required warranty work...but after that it'll likely be either myself, or local shops I trust.

I stopped taking my truck to the dealer on the second oil service, There were bolts missing from the engine splash shield, and they bent the tab that prevents the oil filter from coming loose.
