I bought 2015 Limited with 171K miles last year. Even though I really love the truck, it had the bad chain tensioner right off the bat (I wish I knew it was a common issue), fuel pump is starting to go bad and who knows when the starter will fail.

So I started looking for an upgrade and found the following two great options and they are about the same price:
    1. 2020 TRD PRO with 61K miles . One owner. No service record
    2. 2019 Platinum with 33K miles. Toyota certified used. One owner with decent service record.

They are both about 3-4 hours away from where I live so I won't have luxury to test out both. I really like the look of TRD PRO but fact that 2019 comes with Toyota warranty is really appealing.

I will most likely drive it on pavement for 90%+ of times.
Which one would you buy and why?

    Platinum hands down

More features and $ wise you can probably upgrade quite a bit including suspension before you get to the cost of the Pro. Even at same cost I'd take the Platinum

I personally think a platinum is a much better value than a pro, especially if you're not going off road, in which case outfitting an SR5 for off roading makes more sense than buying a pro to take off road. The platinum has the nice leather, bigger wheels, moon roof, dual climate, heated/cooled seats. The added cost of the pro is so you can have the bed stamp but its just an SR5 with a suspension upgrade and different wheels.

I agree with the general sentiment about Platinum vs PRO, but…. in 2020, they added smart handles, push button start and CarPlay. Also finally upgraded the antenna to a roof mount like the Sequoia had for years.

TRD Pro is also king of resale value. I personally went with a Platinum as I like the interior better and wanted the front sensors. I could care less about the sunroof though.

What colors are each? Are they asking the same amount?

they are same color (both black in and out!)

they are pretty much asking for same price at around 44k.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned anything about Platinum is Toyota certified vehicle which is a big stress reliever for me.

I don’t put too much weight into CPO, mostly because the Tundra is so reliable and secondly, dealerships try to weasel their way out of all warranty work.

Also, I’ve been very surprised at what passes the CPO “multi point inspection.” I would definitely thoroughly inspect the TRD though if you end up going that path. No service records isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as there are a lot of DIY guys that do their own maintenance as they want it done right.

Or it could be someone who just neglected their truck…thus it warrants a close look.

Ah yes forgot about the parking sensors as well. I bought my 19 Platinum in November after the 20s were released and actually wanted it because of the key start since at the time and up until recently you couldn't add a remote start that wouldn't shut down the engine when the door is opened but someone finally cracked that now so the only advantage of having the key now is I can easily make new ones with TechStream and have them cut at home depot. The carplay thing I can see as being something that might make you choose one year over another, personally I just mounted a tablet on the dash since the OEM radio on the 19 is worthless for anything except OTA radio and if you happen to play CDs, I've never once used the Apps or Nav on it.

I love my TRD Pro and waited months for my 2020 during the pandemic. With that said, looking back I would have been just as happy with a platinum and I’m sure my wife would have been a little happier too. As I’ve added to my PRO, I decided to build around everything that makes it a pro. At times I wish I didn’t get a pro that way I wouldn’t have to limit myself so much with upgrades. Yeah I could just upgrade whatever I want regardless and I know several other Pro owners have, but I feel like I need to enjoy and appreciate it for what it already is. Enough rambling from me. Given your choices I’d go with the Platinum.

100% Platinum. More features and creature comforts.

Buy good shocks when you’re either due for replacements or want to upgrade.

I’d fix what you have and keep it. Those other trucks will have the same issues down the road.

Jeez…. Thanks for bringing logic into this conversation, Mike.
    Buzz kill!!!

Well, this is likely the best advice so far if we’re being honest.
