Hey all, so my 2020 Tundra finally is toast. I went to buy a new one but the store only had a 24F. I understand I need a 27F - 710cc battery.

Does anyone have a brand recommendations? I haven’t replaced a battery in any vehicle of mine is veryyy long. Usually lease vehicles. Thanks for the help.

It doesn’t appear that they make a 27F group AGM battery. Unless I am mistaken.

No need for AGM, the trucks charging system was not designed to charge AGM. Save the money and buy a standard battery.

I am going to listen to you all. Wise decision. I’m going to go with the Interstate MTP-27F

When you go to interstate, tell them you want a 27f blem. Interstate battery with a blemished case. Only has 30 day warranty but it’s only $60.00. I change mine every three or four years. They put a sticker on it that says power charge if I remember right.

interesting. I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask. Is this something that’s an unusual deal or do all dealers knows of this?

I only go to my closest dealer but I’m guessing it’s the same at every one. They don’t always have blems of every size in stock. It’s hit or miss depending on which battery cases were molded imperfect. The last two I bought, they had multiples in stock. I also buy pallet Jack batteries that way and those are harder to get.

I would go with AGM....Northstar, odyssey, XS, Optima.

If you are worried about charging, you can add an HKB booster fuse to up your voltage and or throw a smart charger on it every once in a while.

I went with a northstar 27f and its been great, i added the hkb booster, but there are plenty that dont even bother and work great. I've got quite the stereo, so it was a no brainer.

If you are just using the truck like an average person, go to Costco or similar and get at 27F from Interstate. Don't over analyze the decision - go with good enough.

If you are drawing extra power while not running from a fridge, lights, ham radio, etc or are winching, get an Odyssey AGM paired with a diode to increase the charging voltage of your system. Don't go AGM unless you have a true use for it - otherwise it's just wasted money.

A deep cycle battery is actually detrimental for starting your car, They will have less cranking amps but more amp hours.

Seems like it should have been covered under warranty. Mine went out a week before the 36 mo warranty expired and it was replaced no charge.

My 2020 battery went out and I just went to the dealer for warranty replacement. They say the dealer battery is better than the OEM battery from factory. Anyways do yourself a favor and buy a battery. They are all pretty much the same thing. There is like 3 main battery manful for all batteries, acid based. I have seen the black Interstate batteries come to my job with the sticker lop-sided. Basically a generic black shell and they slap whatever manuf label on it.

I just needed my first new battery on my 2018 Looooooooooooong bed SR w/ 35k miles.

Paid $130 to my local dealer for a 27f with a lifetime warranty.

I went with an AGM cranking battery in the boat for one only one reason. My battery is tucked under the console and I have to pull th battery out to check the water which is a PIA. AGM is maintenance free. Even though it is the same CCA as the previous flooded cell my motor does not seem to crank as hard. I would not go AGM in truck.

AGM makes sense there too because you can put it on its side for easier access. Good for consoles and cabinets.

AGM and lithium both have the same uses just lithium is lighter and can be discharged further. Neither meant for a starting battery, more for RVs, trolling motors and other uses where the battery is going to be used with a constant load discharging it and then recharged. Starting batteries are made to supply cranking amps to turn the engine over.

Lithium batteries require special chargers and do not have the CCAs to function as starting batteries. Most people that use lithiums in boats only use them for trolling motors and electronics. There are a few companies that claim they make a lithium battery that can be used as a starting battery in boats.

My understanding and experience is different for AGM.

AGM is a starting battery and by design can deliver 3x more starts than a conventional battery over its lifetime at the same or higher CCA for the size. They also have less of a voltage drop on starting load and faster recovery and charging times.

Got to keep to seat heaters and digital displays running while your auto start stop activates and restarts the engine in traffic. It’s why many new vehicles that have traditional starters require AGM.

AGM batteries can definitely also be starter batteries, I put an Optima Yellow top in my Subaru in maybe 2017 then traded the Subaru for my Tundra and put the Yellow top in my sisters car in 2019 and that battery is still going strong. I completely understand the need for an AGM with start stop since you're drawing while not charging. Deep cycle AGMs are designed different than typical starting batteries though. I'm not an expert, just did a bunch of research and apparently the way plates are designed on deep cycle batteries, they are designed to be drawn from with a normal constant draw, and can be depleted and recharged without damage to the battery which is why they are used in solar power with RVs and trolling motors on a boat. While a normal starting battery in your car just needs to supply CCA to get the motor going and doesnt have much reserve capacity to be used when not being charged. I dont think its about what battery is better and more about application and use. If you are just putting a battery in your Tundra to be able to start it and drive it normally with out a bunch of added electronics and are not drawing from it while not running, than a normal battery is just fine. In a start stop vehicle where its going to be constantly drawn from without the engine running an AGM will definitely be a better choice, although disabling start stop is an even better choice in my opinion. I'm definitely not against AGM and have used them before and they do outlast a normal battery and dont require maintenance but at 2x to 3x the cost, unless you need it, it makes more sense to just use a normal battery and take care of it, by checking the water levels and plugging it into a charger once in awhile to top it off. I still have the stock battery in 2019 and plug it into my Optimate charger maybe once a month and its still going strong.

I work for a battery company that makes Pb acid - Lithium batteries and other chemistries.
    1. There are differences in battery manufacturers, we are 100% compliant to CCA (90% compliance is BCI rule).
    2. AGM is good, but conventional Pb acid is better in hot engine bay, save your money.
    3. EFB is next generation, OE's are starting to use.
    4. Lithium starting is being used in some exotic applications in Europe.
    5. Lithium doesn't like extreme cold or hot/like your cell phone). Can't test CCA will not be possible at 0°F.
    6. Only handful of domestic (Clarios(JCI)/Intersys-NorthStar/EPM/Stryten(Exide) battery manufacturers, most are private labeled...Interstate made by Clarios/JCI
    7. Starting batteries are made for quick burst of energy, deep cycle batteries are made for longer draw, not recommended to interchange.
    8. Stick with OE, or a recognized national brand, most have reputation to manage.
    9. Local private brands are hit and miss, be careful, maker could change due cost.
    Hope this helps.
