I was driving along and had the Vehicle Maintenance Required message pop up on screen. I know my 10k service is coming up but when this message popped up I was still about 431 miles short of 10k. The truck was running fine.

When I stopped and put it in Park so I could view the message, it was not helpful at all. It just said I need to get it to a dealer ASAP.

So I pulled the code: P1604: Startability Malfunction.

The truck is running fine. I had a miscrank once after I had disconnected the battery for something, but on the 2nd attempt it cranked up just fine, and it has cranked fine since then.

My question is, if the truck is running fine and cranking fine, can I wait a few hundred miles and just have this checked when I do my 10k? This will likely be in the next 1-2 weeks. Or do I need to prioritize it now and get it in? I've never dealt with this code before, and it has not occurred enough to generate a lot of traffic on the web about it either.

How’s your battery voltage? Ever run out of fuel?

I would reset code and see if it returns.

The miscrank is probably enough to throw the code, I would reset it and if it reappears, mention it when you take it in for service.

Never have run out of gas. The lowest it's been is maybe 10 miles past the "0 Miles Until Empty" when I was checking on how much the reserve was. Battery voltage fine.

I thought about that as well. It has been a few days since that miscrank, but I know codes often take their time to show up, requiring multiple fail readings before they alert you.

I'll reset and see what happens. Thanks guys.

    Hello everyone.
    Just got the P1604 code.
I just bought the 2012 Tundra 4.6 SR5 4*4 a few days ago private sale

Driving Sunday highway speed and engine shut off ... a few seconds later , I guess from transmission still turning, engine restarted. No engine light.

Yesterday, drive work and noticed engine light on.

Parked at work, later in day tried starting truck, just winding over. Read codes....

I have no history aside from fuel sending unit replaced last summer.

Getting truck towed to my place to further diagnose.

Couple other codes as well. Any ideas?

When I get in warm garage, will check fuses, relay, see if fuel is getting to injection rail...

If it's a hard code it will be stored in the ecm but doesn't mean it's currently happening or that anything is wrong. It's just there telling you it happened. I would just wait till the service if it's running fine and no check engine light is on. Also, just an fyi and my preference but I wouldn't do 10k oil changes. That's just me, I prefer 5k oil and tire rotations.

After having truck towed to my place, it Sat for couple days, last night I tried to start.... Damn thing started... Argh.

Now I got to try and fix something that is working....

Going to check grounds and the RESISTOR module ( fuel pump ecu???) under truck as that was replaced few months ago by P.O.

Might be worth replacing the fuel cap for the evap codes. It may also have a hose loose going to the tank if the prior owner was just working in that area.
