My 21 just hit 22K. Although it runs like a top the engine sounds like a mini diesel. Am I the only hearing this one before I take it back under the extended warranty?.

Try a thicker oil, it won't hurt it. These 5.7's are not a quiet motor. They like to chatter and its normal.

Mine is about 3600 miles now and I plan to do the maintenance at 5000. Should I switch to 5W30? What do I have in now?

Perfectly normal. I will say mine did quiet down a bit with my last oil change when I switched to Mobil 1. I still run the recommended 0W-20 though

Whatever this forum told me to do
    I ran 0w-20 for the 1st 65k miles.

switched to 5w-30 because y'all said it was quieter.

    and yes, it's quieter.

    Most likely snake oil....

    Just kidding, I think 0W-20.
But, if you do your own, get some 5W-30, wouldn't hurt especially your location, Houston ain't that mild for the engine oil and having a thicker would not be hard on the engines as it would if your truck is a rust belt and above, then those prolong colder temps you would want a thinner oil like 0W-20
Funny thing, my wife's new Venza requires, get this, 0W-16.....
What kind of sorcery is this?! You might as well add water with two drops of vegetable oil in it.

Factory and manual recommended oil for normal driving is 0W20. There's a statement in the manual about using 5W30 though.

Debated equally as much as a transmission cooler or oil brand.

    Also, my apologies, @eagleguy , for side-tracking.
Your profile does not state the location, so can't know for sure if it is due to colder weather if you are up north, or if it is just during the colder morning start-up?
If it is like a mini-diesel during normal drive, I would check it in the dealership and have them take a look, because a gas engine is not to sound like a diesel.

I just went with 0w-30 for my last oil change in January and will do 5w-30 going forwards as the warmer months approach.

I feel the most convincing information that supports the notion that 5w-30 is more optimal for engine protection on the 3ur, is the fact that in every country outside of the United States, vehicles with the same 3ur are recommended to use 5w-30.

Hard to make the case that the same engine is recommended to use a thinner oil in the US for any reason other than marginally better fuel economy.

Vic Sheppard is north of 900k miles on a 2014 5.7L V8 right now. Dealer maintained, so 0W-20 oil its whole life. It's pretty clear that Toyota knows how to design an engine lubrication system. I imagine the oil viscosity in relation to engine wear is not the hard part to get right at this point; it's the push to reduce engine inefficiencies from pumping unnecessarily thicker oil and improve fuel economy (however minor that may be).

Congratulations to Mr. Sheppard, but that still doesn't account for the fact that in Mexico and the Middle East Toyota/Lexus vehicles with 3ur's are recommended to use 5w-30. What other rationale could explain that discrepancy? And for all we know there could be 10 "Mr. Sheppards" over there for every one here.

Whatever this forum told me to do
I think this example shows that one merely has to keep oil in the pan.

    any oil.

because, if you think Toyota uses quality Toyota motor oil to do oil changes, I have a bridge I need to sell you.
The dealerships use bulk oil. usually 5w-30. because it's cheaper.

I hope I get the Amsoil boys lathered up.

Everything I have read/heard says it is because vehicles sold in the US are subject to increasingly more strict CAFE standards. Thinner oil is easier to pump through the engine which means less fuel burned, so if the engine can run without wear on a thinner oil then manufacturers will do it. Mexico and the Middle East don't have the same regulations which is probably part of why you can run up to 20W-50 in a 3UR-FE in those markets.

I have run 5w-30 since the first oil change. I cannot really hear any valve train noise on this weight oil. It was noisy on the factory fill.

I don’t think this engine was designed to run 0W-20, just approved to run it.

So perhaps it doesn't really matter given the fact that Mr. Sheppard made it that far on 0w-20.

Although, as @nobodyintexas stated, maybe he hasn't really gotten 0w-20 all along, given the fact dealers don't always follow the manufacturer's recommendations to a T.

I'll still err on the side of the thicker oil if it's recommended elsewhere because it seems logical that down the line the thinner oil would be the more likely one to allow more engine wear (even if that difference is small).

Hard to imagine that them recommending thinner oil for CAFE standards compliance doesn't include them determining what oil is thick enough to get acceptable levels of engine life (versus optimal engine life).

It's entirely possible. I know my local dealer thought I had 3 eyes when I asked for 75W LF transfer case oil, they used whatever 75W-90 they had despite what the owner's manual states. Wouldn't surprise me if engine oil was handled similarly.

At what mileage did the noise start? My 21 has ~30k, about 1/3 of that towing and it's still very quiet.

Manufacturers oil recommendations are based almost entirely on climate, Mexico and the Middle East are obviously much warmer and therefore a thicker oil is optimal in those climates compared to trucks in the US market that may operate in temps as low as -50f in the winter. I'm from the NorthEast and usually run 0w-20 in the winter, but then switch to 5w-30 for the other 9 months of the year.

Step 1. Determine my engine needs an O/F change
Step 2. Buy whatever O/F my little heart desires
Step 3. Change the O/F when my little heart desires
Step 4. Move on with my day know that my engine has fresh oil in it and will not catastrophically fail in 8 miles because I did not put in Antarctica or Arabian desert approved oil.

This is such an overblown topic that appears weekly with the same arguments and no different results. Sounds similar to a term i've heard before.

Then again here I am also contributing
