If the rumours are to be believed, the 2021 tundra will be offered in hybrid, maybe with the turbo giving us a substantial boost in HP and torque. My wife is concerned about buying the first gen, whilst I’m much less risk averse. That said, I don’t think it’s a huge risk given that it may be the first gen Tundra using this tech, but it has been in use and development for a few years, and the engine itself is likely to have seen significant confirmation given its being used in the Lexus. So, the question is as follows:

does anyone have any concern dropping Dime on the first Gen hybrid Tundra? If so, what are your major concerns? If not, why?

    Thanks!

Just like with the first year of the 3rd gen having a sippy cup sized gas tank, there will be a few links to iron out.

I'm gonna wait a year or two to see, and then decide if it's worth the upgrade for me.

I'm not worried about it. I think Toyota's hybrids are the best in the business and they've been working on these for a long time. I really want the better mpg for traveling across our great country. ...but I'm keeping my 2016 TRD Pro though. I had a 2001 Tundra limited with over 300,000 miles on it. Had no problems with it and sold it to a friend. I won't make that mistake again.

Engine and tech I wouldn't worry about since it's all borrowed from lexus. But with any 1st gen, I'd be more worried about the new design flaws that need to be ironed out...from simple things like new body panelling design, to odd leaks, trunk doors etc...you just never know with any new design on these things.

If you look at the 2007 it had some issues, in 2009 it was upgraded slightly to fix those issues. Then when 3rd gen came out, they had a few bugs, that were gone by 2016, like a bigger tank. So I would think that 4th Gen I would wait until 2023+, when there are some actually miles behind the new "Tundra Hybrid." I do agree though with @Bubba03, if someone is going to make a Hybrid pickup, Toyota is going to do it right. It is probably why the 4th Gen hasn't come out yet, they are still working out the system.

Don’t believe the “don’t buy first year model” myths. My 2014 is the “new” model year from the 2007-2013 models and almost 90k miles no major issues. I think the future will be hybrids and electric cars, there’s a reason why Toyota is killing the V8.

Funny you say that, my first Tundra was a 2007, then got a 2014 after the accident. Not really practicing what I preach. ;) The 2007 did have 172000 Miles and the 2014 had 90000 Miles. So maybe what I should have said was wait a couple years and buy used. I am really curious though how that Hybrid will handle towing. I loved my Hybrid Camry, it was a great commuter/family car, had 70000 when I bought it. When you hit the gas, it moved quick, not like a prius. But it was an eCVT so not a good towing vehicle.
I look at it this way. Train locomotives have been running diesel electric for decades, I don't see why we can't do that in our cars and trucks.

The interesting thing to mention, the "updates" from 2007 to 2009 were shift points and some body mounts. The update from 2014 to 2016 was a larger gas tank.... So when I mention that there are updates, they are usually minor upgrades.
