Not that I've seen. I just get the small rust spots in the clear coat. It's pretty noticeable on my white truck. I use Iron X to get it out every spring.

    Welcome.

Looks like the paint got chipped by debris (probably a rock) which led to the paint chipping and surface rust. Are you the original owner? Pretty hard to imagine a 21 would already be rusting.

I put fender flares shortly after I got my truck new. I would fix that rust as soon as possible.

Like what was said above you must have gotten a chip there, went to bare metal and it’s rusting. That spot would also see lots of road grime and moisture so would rust faster. Not a tundra thing, that could happen to any vehicle.

Looks to me like that area was hit by something and dented resulting in the paint chip.

Something hit it and chipped off the paint. You can see how the paint is scraped beneath it.

Presuming that those mud-guards were on there since day 1, it's hard to imagine a rock (or some kind of object) making it's way around that mud-guard while the vehicle is moving and chipping the paint in that spot. If the mud-guards were not on since new, then yeah, pretty easy to see how a rock (or other object) could be picked up by a tire and chip that spot.

@Tundra20211794 That’s not a defect with your truck. That’s damage that went unnoticed and got rusty.

I’m not a detailer or an auto body guy. Maybe others will chime in here with how they’d tackle that. Seems like kind of a big spot to use a touch-up pen on.

I would probably try to DIY it. I’d clean the rust as well as I could. Then I would try a Toyota touch-up pen. The trick is, you have to take your time. If you do a giant blob in that spot, it’s going to look terrible and fall off again. Try to apply in the thinnest coats possible. I’ve read that lots of thin coats work best.

There are Toyota touch-up pen videos on YouTube. I’d buy a pen and start watching.

Yup, looks damaged, which chipped paint where it’s creased.

Not saying you hit something. Majority of us are saying something hit it.

From my experience, most natural rust starts in the metal below the paint surface. It'll eventually bubble as it's eating through the metal and then eventually out the paint. This situation looks like the paint chipped off THEN started to rust. Since the flaps would protect that area from kick up from the tire, maybe some freak thing happened where a rock flew in from the side from a passing vehicle. Or something else strange.

No one is saying you hit something. We are saying that something hit the truck and went unnoticed.

Might've even happened before you got the truck. Dealership people are notoriously careless. Possibly happened on someone else's test drive. :notsure:

A small dent or ding in that spot would be really hard to notice until the paint flaked off and it started to rust, which is what you're seeing now.

Ha think of it this way. It’s like you picked up a nail and got a flat tire. Sucks but not trucks fault.

Weedwacker or mower shot a rock at it? I’ve seen that happen before. Broken window, too.

If it makes you feel any better I have a brand new trailer I have financed sitting in the driveway that I haven’t even used yet, and it’s already rusting just because it is existing.

Why is it rusting? Does moving it prevent rust?

Meh. It’s a dump trailer. They all rust if they aren’t galvanized. It’s just little spots but still not my favorite thing to see.

Ahh gotcha. My brain instantly assumed you were talking about a camper trailer. Makes sense with a dump trailer though.

Yeah. Several years ago, my tractor w/ belly mower shot a rock near through the tailgate of my Nissan Frontier. Didn’t see it happen but, I could see the damage from 50 yards away. Damn thing also took out a window of my house too. I’m no longer mowing with a tractor, lol.

Something larger than road grit or a small rock did that. The metal deflection around the rust spot, as well as the discoloration and different texture below it are abnormal. It would have been loud if you were driving.

A DIY paint repair would look bad. You're in flare to cover it or body shop territory unless you're set up to do your own paint work.

He still needs to fix it to prevent more rust. Need to fix even more if he's going to install flares. It's pretty bad under the flares: dirt accumulates and keeps moisture. I take them off twice a year for a good clean and corrosion prevention.
