I recently purchased a 2023 Tundra Limited with a build date of 5/23 putting it outside the recall window. Looking into all the information and posts on this forum, it appears a failure is still possible but am unable to get a sense of how probable it is.

I have looked at the google doc provided on this forum and the threads concerning this and wanted to know if anyone has compiled any recent statistics on the number of failures across the build dates after the end of the recall and the overall % or ppm of engines affected from 2022. I would do it myself and I would likely get it wrong (I was horrible at stats in college) and was hoping someone in this forum with better knowledge and skills may have the numbers at hand.

just drive your truck man and don't worry about it

there is enough speculation to read here for the next 30 years and its all meaningless.

toyota is NOT going to release any true data.

All we really know is that anything built has the potential to fail. That's just life. If you buy Toyota's recall reasoning and believe it was worked out around 2/2023, then anything after should just have a regular "acceptable" failure rate. Those in the recall are certainly more likely to fail, and at this point may be more when than if. We've speculated on this for so long that even with Toyota stating a "safe" date, we still get itchy after hearing newer builds fail, even though some will always fail no matter what and may not be a related root cause. We roll the dice on everything we do in life.

Before the internet you wouldn't even know it was a concern worth thinking about before getting a letter in the mail. Here we were concerned about a year before the recall.

You're not wrong. The age of information that we live in makes it easy to get a bad impression. In the past, the current level of communication from Toyota would have been acceptable. Today, the level of communication seems sub par simply due to how easy it its to research and get data (both bad and good). Its also easy for a few to skew the perceived data one direction or another by being "louder" than the rest. All that makes creating an informed position rather hard.

I appreciate the responses already given, I still am interested in the numbers of anyone has something. I think those would add perspective. If not, then I will "Boost On".

Couple things...shouldve done/asked this before buying if it was something it would deter you from buying. Second, at what failure rate would it make you want to jump ship? Youre already in it, you already know its very possible that you could blow the engine, might as well just drive it and let it do its thing. Hopefully you bought an extended warranty because there is no % of probability @ XX,XXX miles...its a crap shoot.

I purposely waited until the recall was announced and found a vehicle outside of the recall window. Reports of failures outside that window are concerning and a overall impression of the bell curve from the resulting numbers showing the ppm of failures does help assuage those concerns. I have the option to purchase an extended warranty and am considering it but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I may sometime in the near future as the truck has 6k miles on it and almost 2 years of warranty left.

In the in end was I aware of what i was getting into, yes. Did I still purchase one, yes. Does the failure probability interest/concern me, yes. You make that investment, you'd be a fool not to be prepared and get a greater understanding both before and after purchase.

Look at me justifying myself to someone on the Internet for asking a question, I'll stop now...

I canceled my extended warranty. If mine does blow, in or out of warranty, I believe Toyota will cover it. Why pay for the warranty.
To answer the OPs pondering, the google doc is locked down, only the owner has access to compile. There is a little data there- 83 22’s, 17 23’s and 3 24’s. But lacking the most important datapoint imo… date of failure.
Stats can be spun a million ways though, even with accurate data.

Even if you did compile the numbers to a spreadsheet, it wouldn't be conclusive data. Failures keep happening and they will continue to keep happening until every engine covered by the recall is replaced.

I am a data person and like to see this stuff but it's also not going to change much for you other than just the "know". But I agree, it's nice to see data even if it doesn't change the present.

The only data that will truly paint a picture of % or PPM will be IF Toyota shares that information as it keeps changing.

In the meantime, keep driving and enjoying your truck.

No one has any data. If you’re looking for a MTBF type calc or 5 9’s burn down you’re not going to get it

I’m the same build month. Just drive and enjoy your truck.

Still have my college statistics textbook, "How to Lie with Statistics", professor spent a lot of his lectures explaining how statistics can be spun to "prove" whatever it was that you wanted to prove.

The engine recall is one thing... I have a 2023 (build date is 2/10/2023 and toyota doesnt list my ride as part of the recall)
That being said by front active airdam recently died. Gave me a lovely message on the dash about it.
Brought it to the dealer and they diagnosed the motor in it failed. How much just for the motor? $850
Luckily I am under factory warranty. I've got the extended warranty too and aside from the engine.. every other part in this truck is expensive too! 2k for 120k miles and 10 years with zero deductible. One or two trips to the dealer will easily cover the cost of the warranty.

That's why I like to have the raw data and then work with it myself. Output is only as good as what the input is.

Yep, good points, especially with the tech. I gambled that things like your airdam motor would go during factory warranty.

I may end up with an extended warranty if the powertrain warranty won't cover the engine in the event of a failure (I need to look into it a bit). At the very least the extended warranty would cover many of the electronics that may fail. I have a good bit of time before I need to make up my mind so I can at least research it a bit more and I can also wait out the recall a bit to see if they expand it.

I thought all 2023’s are on the recall except the hybrid models. Is yours a hybrid?

It's not a hybrid. Only the 2023's with a February build date and before are under recall. Mine was built 5/23.

Another thread of "I'm gonna die and want to know when." Just drive it. Get an extended 10 yr warranty with zero deductible and stop worrying. If you still own it in 10 years and it has not shit the bed you won, and if
it shit the bed your warranty will make a whole lot less remorseful about the initial purchase and getting a warranty. Enjoy the truck, it's still better than any competitors option. 5/23 build date here with Platinum zero deductible extended warranty coming before 3yr/mileage service date to cover the unknown (look for the thread and do it).

Help me out on the premium warranty. When I search for the warranty options on Toyota's website, I get the options of Powertrain, Gold, and Platinum but no premium. The only one that offers 10 years is the Platinum. Is this the one you are referring to?

And yes, the other options for a 1/2ton are not as good, its cold comfort.

He is referring to the platinum warranty. That is the top warranty that Toyota offers.

Platinum Zero deductible is what I meant to say. I'd not bother with the Toyota Web or Dealer to secure this product - There are a few mentions in the Extended Warranty Thread that provide contact information - No pressure, no fluff, no overcharging like the Dealer tries to pull on you at purchase. GL and drive on!

This is the guy you want to call for extended warranty’s. My 24 SR5 4x4 5/24 buildIMG_0322.png is only 3/36K. I’m debating on calling this guy.

And yet another reworded thread about engine failure. This will never end,,,,,,, until they reach 102,000 trucks!
It is virtually an impossible task to figure out numbers without having ALL and I mean ALL data collected going thru one point.
Toyota says it could affect 102,000 vehicles so until they hit that number everyone is suspect!!! HA!!! :)
Once they hit that number then everyone can rest!!!!:) Yup that’s the ticket!!!!!:)

Give or take a few thousand????:)
