2022 Engine Failure

    My '22 Tundra broke down three weeks ago with 51k miles, had it towed to dealer and I just got it back. They replaced the short block. My concern is when I asked about warranty I have until 60k miles. Should I be worried or trade it in?

    If you’re worry buy an extended warranty. They should offer it to the first owner.

    Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your failure.

    Pretty sure Toyota extended warranties have to be purchased in first 36 months or 36000 miles, which ever occurs first. Im sure there are aftermarket warranties. I’d ask the service department where you get work done which warranty company they prefer to work with. They will know which ones are better at covering needed repairs. If you buy one be sure to read the whats covered list before buying.

    I haven’t heard of any of the rebuilt engines failing so not sure you need to rush and trade it in if you like your truck. Maybe others on this forum can comment if any of the rebuilds have failed.

    To answer your "keep or trade in" question with my opinion: For me, if I were in your situation, I would ask about an extended warranty. A few owners with failures seem to have been successful at getting either their local dealership or Toyota to provide an extended warranty at little or no charge. However, it seems most are not successful at winning that debate. They either have to pay for it or are ineligible for it due to mileage. I believe that Toyota's mileage cap for the purchase of an extended warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles. After that point, I don't believe Toyota allows a factory 1st party Toyota warranty on the vehicle. However, I would still ask about it. Otherwise, you could look into a possible 3rd Party warranty.

    If I was unable to secure an extended warranty, then I might think about trading in the vehicle depending on the hit to trade-in value the engine rebuild causes. If it's too big of a value hit and puts you too far upside down (assuming you have a loan), then it might be wiser to keep it for the long haul.

    I'm not sure I trust the majority of dealerships out there to rebuild the engine & reassemble the truck with a high degree of quality and care. I used to have a lot of trust in Toyota service techs. My old Toyota dealer in Florida (in the mid 2010's) employed a bunch of ASE Master techs and they were awesome. However, it seems the number of highly skilled techs has declined measurably post-COVID. Either that or people's level of care for customer vehicles has disappeared. Some of the pictures I've seen of how they treat customer trucks that are getting engine rebuilds are downright appalling.

    In the states, Toyota includes 2 basic warranties with every new vehicle purchase:
    • Basic Bumper-to-Bumper is 3 years/36,000 miles
    • Powertrain is covered for 60 months/60,000 miles
    So he was still in warranty under the basic powertrain coverage. Assuming he bought it new and was the first owner (he doesn't say but I assume he is). I don't know if either of the basic warranties transfer to a second owner unless the used truck is purchased as a CPO from a Toyota dealer.

    Is a lemon and get Toyota to do a buyback on it. That truck will never retain its value for sure.

    The lack of a warranty extension for a failed engine and ensuing major fix is criminal.

    All service done by any Toyota dealer has a 1 year 12k mile warranty.

    N/A and that is the industry standards for all OEMs. It works for a $600 sensor replacement

    If your engine fails up to 48k miles you get the same 60k powertrain warranty. Given they are dealer tech replacing the short block risk of long term issues and repair quality variances are higher than factory. Yet you get the standard factory warranty like it was factory assembled when it was locally repaired maybe by techs doing it the first time

    Toyo should warranty that for longer.
