I filled my tank Saturday night and I walked outside on Sunday afternoon (lucky timing I guess) and noticed that gas was leaking from the filler neck area. The truck wasn’t running and it had been parked for 12 hours. I popped the fuel door, loosened the cap, tightened it back up and the leaking stopped. I didn’t drive it Sunday and on my way to work this morning I noticed I now have an alert about checking the fuel cap. I checked it again when I stopped, it clicks once and it’s tight. It’s not leaking at the moment but the warning message is still on after clearing it. Anybody run into this before? ‘22 hybrid with only 912 miles. Thanks.

Is it possible someone tried to siphon some fuel?

Did you keep pumping gas after the first click??

No I did not. When the pump first stopped, I stopped. I don’t know why I wouldn’t have but maybe I didn’t get the cap tight to the tightening “click”. I don’t know why that would have made it leak anyway. I was talking to someone when I finished fueling up so I guess it’s possible but I doubt it. The thing is that I drove it home Saturday night, parked it and no leaking. The next day it hadn’t even been started or anything and it just started to drip profusely out of the blue 12 hours later. After I removed the cap and retightened it to the click, it stopped.

It has a locking fuel door so I don’t think someone was siphoning gas.

Is this something the Limited and higher trims have? My SR5 most certainly does NOT have a locking fuel door.

Typical for some Toyota’s to pressurize the fuel system 4-5 hrs after being shut off. This could explain the gas, but you obviously have a leak somewhere in the line.

Not sure which models have the locking fuel door but it’s a Limited and there’s a button on the dash to pop the fuel door.

I was wondering if it may have had system pressure with a loose cap due to some self diagnostic procedure but I know most vehicles pull vacuum to check for evaporative system leaks.

I’m not saying this is related to your problem, but Yota hybrids have a unique gas cap/door design. CCN (“problem #2”) discusses it here, again, not sure if this is the case on the ‘22 Tundras but it is nonetheless interesting.

Not sure if the same but my 80 series Land Cruiser would vapor lock and spray everywhere if you drove without properly clicking the gas cap.

It’s looking like it may have something to do with the special evaporative system on the hybrid models combined with a gas cap that wasn’t “clicked” tight. Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ll update if it does it again.

My 2022 tundra has exactly the same problem. Except it only happen one time. I had filled the tank until the gas pump shut off. Then I parked it on an inclined driveway facing up the hill so that the front of the truck was higher than the the rear of the truck. The high temperature was about 98 degrees that day. I think it was a combination of all these factors. But gas really should not leak out of the truck under any circumstances. Gas was leaking out of the fuel filler door, dripping down the side of the truck, and there was a little spot of gas on the driveway just as you have shown in your picture. You are not the only one to which this has happened.

Truck is leaking gas again. I parked the truck on my inclined driveway as I had done before. It is 95 degrees today. I think I can see the source of the gas leak. There is a tube or hose that runs from the fuel filler opening to the fuel tank. The gas is seeping out at the top of the hose where the hose is connected to the fuel filler opening. It must be that the hose is not properly connected to the fuel filler opening or there is a hole in the hose. You can see ti if you lie down in front of the rear tire and look up to where the hose is connected to the fuel filler opening. I do not understand why there is no safety recall for this gas leak. It is dangerous.

My 2022 Tundra is now at the dealership. They pressure tested it. They cannot find the leak. I told them where it was leaking. I saw the gas leaking on two occasions, and I showed them a video of the gas leaking onto the driveway. I also showed them the picture at the beginning of this thread. They filed a case with Toyota and are waiting for a reply. Because there is a safety recall ( 23TA09 ) for another unrelated potential gas leak, they rented a Tacoma from Enterprise Rental Agency for me for a month for about $1,600. Toyota is paying for it. They could not give me or the rental agency an estimate of the length of time that I would need the rented Tacoma. In order to rent a vehicle for me, they have to keep my Tundra on their property. Toyota expects to have a temporary fix for the safety recall in October and has not yet sent out notices. So I have a potential gas leak for Safety Recall 23TA09 for which there is not yet a fix, and I have a definite gas leak that the dealer can't find and for which there is apparently no recall. Safety Recall 23TA09 orders all dealers "do not sell new vehicles in dealer inventory." Toyota customer service sent me a copy of the recall. The rented Tacoma is a base model 2wd. My Tundra is the Limited model 4wd. Big difference. If you have a 2022 Tundra, you might consider calling Toyota Customer Service to get a copy of the recall.

Why didn’t you have the dealership simply top it off like it was at home, and raise the front of the truck to duplicate your definite leak?

Pretty sure there is a recall for this. Fuel line can rub against the brake line and cause a leak. Dealer is waiting for parts to fix it.

[IMG] I got the same issue, I took my tundra 2022 1794 edition to the dealership, they replaced the fuel tank and the carbon canister but after they put fuel again top off started again leaking, they said they are gonna get with toyota because they need to send an engineer from the factory, I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be the next recall on this truck, I’m planning to get a lawyer to get my money back or get another one. Quality wise I really believe toyota is going south, I just had it for a month from the dealership and i already got this problem. Bad news for toyota

When you pop the door open, the tank vents and allows fuel to enter. When you fuel it if it's not venting you will know right away as the fuel will blow back. And I do mean right away.

You have a fuel leak somewhere. I would bet Fuel Cap as your picture has it more less top off filler tube or cap.

BTW, someone asked if you add more fuel after it clicks off......I do 2-3 times on every fill so it aint that

Hi Krusty, still a bad habit with modern engines after 2008 or so. Had issues with former Tundras and Titans that dealer blamed on this practice from former owners. Care care nut says not to do it as well, so I avoid as a just in case ymmv.

I have been doing it this way for 44 years over 28 different vehicles ( personal and work ), never had an issue. Must just be luck I guess
