    Hey everyone,

I have a 2022 Tundra Limited 4x4 Crewmax 6.5 ft bed with TRD Offroad package on order. I also have a purchase pending for a Four Wheel Camper Hawk, roll over couch floor plan. Estimated Hawk dry weight of 1,539 lbs.

My question is, am I shooting myself in the foot with this setup? I understand the arguments for a 3/4 ton or full ton truck but does anyone have experience with this or similar setup?

My trucks GVWR is listed at 7365.

I see a lot of folks posting about leaf's and airbags. What do you think y'all? I haven't signed any paperwork regarding buying the truck yet.

That truck probably weighs close to 5700 lbs. That camper will leave 130 lbs for a driver…

Talk to @evergreenoffroad. If I remember correctly, I believe he's spec'ing out his truck (DC 6.5' bed) for an Alu-Cabin expedition-style setup, which is similar to the FWC. I know I've seen a few others on here mention building their trucks for an Alu-Cab.

Also...you might follow Expedition Overland on YouTube. They're building their 22 Tundra for an expedition setup using Alu-Cab.

I'm not pushing Alu-Cab on you. haha. Just thinking they might be able to offer educated info since those Alu-Cabs are pretty heavy too.

There are a few of us on here with 22's and a FWC now I believe. You will need to modify the suspension and will be over GVWR. No way around it unless you get a 3/4 ton with that setup. You might be able to pull it off with certain f150's but either way you are pushing it. If you are truly concerned about GVWR then go 3/4 ton.

What I can say about the 22 is with the only mod being the heaviest duty OME 80 series springs on my truck it rides fine even when fully loaded with water gear and wife. I have a double cab though. I just ordered some timbren bump stops and will be adding falcon shocks and a hellwig swaybar as soon as they are available. I am thinking about swapping the springs out again once they make some specific for the truck with airbags but at this point its not necessary.

I really appreciate the beneficial info everyone. @Keeferton have you taken your rig on any rougher roads at this point? I live in the Colorado Front Range and spend a decent amount of time on my off days driving down beat up or rocky forest roads. We also get plenty of snow in the winter, what have you or others/heard or found with the extra weight on snowy roads?

I'm seeing some full kits like this https://mudify.com/products/ometun-0721-2-5med?_pos=1&_sid=c87452598&_ss=r

    Or

Just rear springs on their own. Anybody have further recommendations on that? Thanks in advance again for helping me out here.

You’re gonna want to look for 2022 tundra specific lifts/components. That says 2007+ but it doesn’t work on the 2022s (we have coils, no leaf’s).some of the Arb series coils work on our 2022 tundra, but it’s not plug and play and you gotta kinda figure out what works for your specific situation (or trust some of the dudes who have them on their trucks already, which I recommend). Ignore the highlighted rows, but those are ones I’m looking at trying out.

since it’s relevant. Here’s the response I got from ARB on their coils.

Thanks for the input @jgoliath. I've been looking around and doing as much research as I can. Ultimately trying to find a decent compromise between family vehicle and adventure rig. I think I'm starting to narrow in on what that looks like for us. Thanks everyone. If anybody else sees this, feel free to keep the good info coming!

Another fun piece of info is that some of these coils have a shorter A coil and a taller B coil. Traditionally on Toyotas, you put the taller coil on the drivers side, but idk if that’s the case with the new tundras.

Maybe @Keeferton can add to this from his experience. I’ve been trying to find someone who pulled the stock coils to see if one of the coils sits higher than the other and what side it was pulled from if it did.

They are the ome 2864 Extra Heavy 2.5″ lift 880+ lbs GVW springs.

No idea if one spring was longer than the others. I told the guys at mule what I wanted to do and after a little convincing they installed them for me. They said they installed fine but had to have a couple guys stand in the bed to get the bottom shock bolt to line up. The springs are considerably stiffer and I don’t think they would be great without a constant load but I keep my camper on 100% of the time.

After speaking a little more with shop installing the Hawk, I'll be buying a set of Timbren Bumpstops and just working with those. I plan to see how it goes on the one hour drive from the shop to my house. Maybe try out a few easy dirt roads. The mechanic and installer said there isn't a dedicated suspension upgrade for the '22 Tundra right now. Obviously there are some suspension upgrades that will fit and that may be what I end up doing at some point. I'll report back after the install. Somewhat curious about how the truck will ride given I am getting a crewmax and not a DC.

Truck should have over 2k available payload for that unit, you would need it, once you add passengers and gear you are getting into dangerous weight territory.

I dont remember the username, but there was a 2.5 gen guy here that built his truck to "handle" such a camper. Upgraded suspension and other things, said it drove great even being over weight. Totaled his truck when he lost control trying to bring all that mass to a quick stop just a few months after the build. Towing/hauling at or above limits is always good and fine until it is not. You just never know when it is not until it is too late. There is a new post in the past couple days of a 2022 wrecked towing a 30 foot camper beyond its capability.

Not trying to get into a pissing match of those that tow or haul over. I know from personal experience that being at or over limits is dangerous business.

guys at adventure motors in KC have one as well and are dialed on the suspension for these trucks- reach out to Michael and tell him I sent you. They did my full lift kit and dialed in everything for the future weight of- bumpers, winch, topper, decked system etc.

you can also get airbags for the land cruiser (mine are going in asap) to help with additional sag
