So i have a 22' crewmax sr5 OR on order here in Canada, with an allocation date of July 17. I need to confirm if that is the estimated delivery or start production date, etc.

Regardless, Im looking to maximize my negotiating leverage as I have a trade in. Here's my question... If I cancel my order before a certain date the truck will not get built and the dealer will not be able to add that truck to their inventory/profit from its sale to me OR anyone else who they will easily be able to sell it to locally for full pop. Do I have that right?

I.e. it hit me this morning that if we both know that I'll walk /cancel the order if we can't reach a deal AND that they will literally get nothing (can't add stock to inventory and sell to others who will buy it) if I do so before that date then it appears to me that I'm in a better position to negotiate that I initially realized.

So... If my thinking is correct... Then what date should I be asking my dealer for and negotiating before.

E.g. 2-3 weeks before the scheduled production date?

Thanks and hoping some with inside insight will offer some wisdom here.

That's the common misconception is that you ordered a truck. You in fact did not...that truck is getting built whether you asked for it or not. The dealership received the allocation for it because you asked for it, now it's theirs. You back out and they will gladly let you walk and sell it to the next person on their waiting list. With all the threads and gripes out there about how hard it is to find a new Tundra and dealers crazy market adjustments you should never think you have the upper hand in negotiations right now....a year or so down the road maybe but not right now in today's market. Sorry

I 'liked' your post but I don't like it! Lol

So I did have a window theoretically... Between the time I 'ordered' andwhen Toyota assigned the allocation. HM. That sucks for me.

My build was due in august, the dealer called me and said someone backed out of their truck and it’s the same build as mine and if I wanted this one or wait till august for mine to arrive. I’m going in Monday to pick it up and trade in my 13 Tacoma, you’ll just make the next guy waiting happy if you walk.

You have no negotiating leverage at all unless you've been a customer to that specific dealership for years and years and have a relationship with upper management.
The allocation date doesn't matter they will easily sell the truck if you don't want it.
It's an allocation for the closest match to what you want not an "order".
If you're before the allocation has been confirmed then essentially nothing has happened yet.
Even if the truck has been built they'll sell it.

To put things into perspective, there were several people waiting behind me to get my truck if I were to back out.

Only thing I can suggest is generally agree on a trade price and get what you want on it!!
That's about all you have control over.

Yeah I guess the trade in does offer some additional value to them in profit... If the goal is to maximise the profit on each vehicle sold. And we did agree on an all in deal including the trade... I've since put 5000 kms on it and presuming they'll try to give me less for it come time to finalize things.

    Thanks for your input everyone!!!
