I currently have a 2017 Tacoma Off-Road, which I sold my 14' 4R SR5 for because we moved to a farm and needed something with a box. We are expecting our first baby soon, though, and once I put the car seat in there, I realized how tight it is in the back. I'm now torn on either going back to a 5th Gen 4R or looking at a 3rd Gen Tundra.

The 4R is tried, tested, and bulletproof, but the new tech and power of the Tundra are night and day. Prices are relatively comparable for a 2019-2020 4R and 2022 Tundra in my area (BC), but I am hoping to see if others have made any similar leaps and what their experience has been.

There is one in particular that I have been eyeing up (2022 Tundra Crewmax Sport with 110,000 KM), which would cost me about $10,000 CAD to upgrade from my Taco. Is it worth it, or do I try and "make it work" with the Taco until I can afford a newer year?

I know the 22' Tundra's have had some horror stories, and their longevity/ reliability is questionable, which is why I am hesitant in the first place.

powder keg of a post and question.

you're just going to have make you're own decision.

here, I'll sum up all both sides and you'll be right back to where you started after a bunch of posts

the Gen 3 is shit, avoid at all costs, just look at the recall

the gen 3 is great and mine has been great, pull the trigger.

there, saved a whole bunch of time and a locked thread at the end.

good luck with your decision and I wish you good luck eitherway.

If the US recall also applies to Canada, go for it. You're guaranteed a new engine if yours goes bad. If not, I'll probably pass. I have a 2023 with 17k miles and no major issues so far. Is it perfect? No, but no truck is perfect.

Hard to beat a 4runner if it fits your needs. I still have a 2006 that my son drives, 200k miles and still runs and drives strong.

If you could find a nice 5th gen on a lot, discounted perhaps....your kids would be driving it it 15 years.

Dunno know about that. Mine is Perfect------------------------------------FOR ME, After a few more mods it will be even more perfect---------------------- FOR ME :stirthepot: :).
Drive what you want, I like my 2nd gen, A lot of people like their 3rd Gen. Both will have a lot more room than a Tacoma or a 4runner, Just my 2 cents

    My wife drives a 2022 4Runner. I drive a 2023 Tundra.

I'm a big guy, so the 4runner feels cramped to me. I couldn't comfortably drive cross-country in it. It's perfect for my wife.

While my Tundra fits me and my needs better, at this point I'm pretty sure my wife's 4Runner will be more reliable, and have a much lower cost of ownership in the long run. I feel like she got the last of a proven great model era. I got the first of a work in progress.

I own a 2015 4RUNNER, been taking my family of 4 on multiple road trips across the country. Any vehicle can break but I think you'll be safer with the 4RUNNER.
I would love a Tundra but I am going to wait for at least a year before I pull the trigger. I don't know your situation but me personally a pickup truck is something I want, not something I really need.

I am 6'2 and the 4runner doesn't feel too small, even when my whole family rides with me.

I have a 2023 tundra with a 5/23 build date. Ill be honest and say i have (briefly) thought about trading it for a truck within the recall range based on the good experiences most members have had here so far with the replacement. The rest of the truck has been more or less solid. Most issues have been related to chasing down random rattles, re learning to drive a turbo, and just getting used to how the the truck operates.
