    Hey guys, I’ve been looking at both of this trucks. Wanted to hear your opinion between the two.

    if I am being honest, I think the Silverado is a better package, and seems like it would be cheaper too. Also has 4auto which to me is a game changer in the winter in my opinion for people in the northern states.

    What I’m not too sure about is the powertrain with 3.0 diesel, 5.3 v8 and 6.2 v8. With the 8 speed and 10 speed transmission.

    Would be cool if someone can probably some insight.

    Anyway, what are your thoughts?

    Do all the half ton V8 Silverados still have cylinder deactivation? Everyone I know with one that had cylinder deactivation has lost a motor or more during warranty period. The 3.0 Diesel would be pretty interesting if Diesel wasn't 1.5x the cost of regular grade gasoline.

    I think the Duramax is great for getting good mpgs/towing and has been fairly reliable, that's the most interesting engine available in the half ton for Chevy. A neighbor had his brand new GMC Sierra 5.3 at the dealer about half a dozen times for issues with the computer throwing codes with the fuel management. So much so he is going to get rid of it before the warranty as he doesn't trust it wont cause him major bills later on.
    IMO the Duramax or 6.2 would be the way to go with GM. Overall, the Toyota will more than likely be the best in the long haul if you plan on keeping the truck past the warranty period.

    GM has problems with both the 8 speed and 10 speed transmissions. I had a 2022 and 2023 denali on order for a year with 6.2 and changed my mind because of recalls, incomplete option delivery , trans problems .
    I have owned both gmc trucks with 8 speed not again . I bought a 1794 hybrid.

    Easy choice. I'd much rather take the relatively new and unproven twin turbo tundy than any of the GM designs, especially the 5.3 which is notorious for blowing up like how Toyota is generally notorious for refusing to blow up.

    Yes you def want the 10 speed but i think most engines are coming with it now unless you get a low trim.

    For me the Duramax is an incredibly appealing package, but you need to tell us how you use your truck. Do you tow? Whats the price of diesel vs gas in ur area?

    I tow a travel trailer around the Rockies so the 5.3 and 6.2L wouldnt even be a consideration. I would be deciding between the Tundra and a 3.0 Duramax. The Duramax produces way more torque than the 6.2L below 3000 rpm and they are the same at 3750 rpm.

    No chance in hell I would trade a 2020 5.7 for a Chevy V8 or think about a Chevy. Sorry, not sorry. The 3.0Dmax sound enticing but it’s not the engine I worry about, it’s the rest of the truck. Can I ask why the switch?

    I do not tow that much, maybe once or twice a year. I also can work from home but need to go to the office about 1 a month or so. Commute is about 62 miles round trip. Most of my driving is city driving.

    cost of diesel here is $5.29 or so a gallon, gas is about $3.29.

    this research is mostly for a friend if mine that is looking into these two specific trucks and got interested and starting doing research about them. I’m not switching though.

    I had 2 GMC Sierra's a 99 and an 07. The 99 was a great truck but the 07 is what drove me to Toyota. Between the oil consumption and the third transmission I decided GM was no longer made with the quality I required. The Tundra has been all that I wanted in a truck. Mine is a 19 though and not the new model. I'd probably not purchase one of those for a few years. I'd find a low mileage 21 or older with a V8 for now.

    Honestly, with that use case you could really have any engine you want to be totally fine. I’d honestly even look at the 2.7 L in the GM trucks. It’s a stout little motor and more efficient than the V-8.

    The Duramax isn’t gonna save you much money if any with that kind of spread between gasoline and diesel if you’re not towing then torque doesn’t really matter so much

    Good to know it’s for your friend and not you as I’d have suggested keeping what you have! I haven’t driven either one so take my opinion with a grain of salt but hey you asked. I have been following the owners pages of both. From the outside looking in, if I had to buy a new 1/2 ton tomorrow it would probably be the 3.0 duramax. And I’m a tundra man through and through.

    Get yourself Firefox or Brave. If you go into the settings in Firefox and set your Tracking Protection to "strict" is pretty much blocks everything in my experience.

    When I priced out (probably changed) the price to needs ratio for me was much lower with Toyota. I’d have needed the 6.2(3.0 was under 10K lbs towing) which come with higher trim cost, and $4k more. Liked the ride of the Toyota more as it’s my daily and even with the reported problems, no where near what GM sees. Do love the 6.2 though. Get why folks fall in love with it and decide “mine will work”.

    Tundra if you want higher resale value, chev if you want diesel. I have a tundra, my neighbor a 2020 3.0L duramax. He thinks my interior is leaps ahead of his. 2023 is def a step up though. He's also had his truck in the shop for probably 5-6 months total in his ownership since new. Exhaust problems, and an entire crankshaft replacement under warranty.

    All cars are garbage

    For toyota IMO stick with a 2021 or under. This from a guy who has owned 5 tundras, the last being a 2022 for 4 months and traded it off for a Silverado.

    Most Silverados I see now with the 5.3 have the DFM not active, and a 10 speed transmission.

    The Silverado has the leg room, seat room and on a LT trim lots of options you dont see on the tundra.

    The 2022 tundra turned me off the truck, I looked at some pre owned tundras but at $45 to $50K I just went for a new Silverado and called it good.

    Buy the extended warranty if you go GM. The V8s have lifter problems and the 30 DMax is a total ? reliability wise There are reports of issues with the 10 speed tranny as well.

    I bought my pre owned tundra in that price range.

    I was looking at the new 2023 Silverados prices and saw it is in the 50k range for an LT! That’s not bad.

    I do have a 1794 so if I wanted the same features, I’m thinking I have to go for a higher trim Silverado but I haven’t really taken the time to build one

    what is the payload? Im shocked a 1/2 ton would be rated that much, it must have a much higher payload or soemthing

    Not sure on payload, I’d almost have to see the payload stickers since as we know with our tundras the advertised numbers are BS. I thought it was crazy too but the owners Facebook page had people mentioning that was the towing capacity. According to this article they aren’t wrong if you get the max tow package anyway.     The tundra was a SR5, DC 6.5ft bed 4x4.

    Yes the Silverado is a LT, sticker after rebates was $53500.

    Its a LT with front buckets, console, 13.5in info center and electronic dash.

    35” Falken Wildpeak AT3, 17x8.5 method 305 nv, trd lift kit, trd pro grill, trd exhaust

    Not only do they have 10 speed issues just like ford (nearly exact same trans fyi). The blow 1st and 4th planetary gears frequently, but the 6.2 is notorious for lifter issues

    I was in the same boat about 2 years ago, except The new Tundra wasn’t out yet. So I am coming from a 2015 Canyon, and it was a damn good machine, but needed to go half ton. I really like the new GM truck design also. Was going for the 3.0 crew cab Sierra with the 10 speed. It’s a smooth ride with great mileage.

    I was pretty hesitant with the AFM lifter problems and then the 3.0 DEF stuff. The 2.7 is seemingly a pretty great motor, but it wasn’t really much more capable than the 3.6 I already had.

    well anyway, I saw the new Tundra design, drove one, and then chased that for several months before landing one. The Tundra is a better all around machine than any of the GM variations. The GM trucks do seem more tough than the Tundra if that makes sense. Parts of my Tundra just seem like plasticky afterthoughts, but what really counts is under the hood, and I am sold on the TTV6. This is my 3rd Toyota, as I had an 86 and an 02 Tacoma.

    I won’t lie though, the 6.2 and especially that 3.0 Diesel are pretty damn sexy. And if I was going HD, I would stop at the nearest GM dealer and go no further.
