    Hi guys

this is my first time getting a new tundra in 15 years. What is the maintenance schedule like? is it really every 20k yo get an oil change or is it every 5k? the dealer told me we got 2 years of free maintenance ? so do we bring it in every 5k miles?

Toyota recommends 10K for oil and 5k for tire rotation. You basically get 2 free oil changes and 4 free tire rotations. It’s a hot debate but I’ve never done 10k between oil changes in any of my Tundras. I used up my two years of oil changes my first 10,000 mikes

Same here, every 5,000 for oil and tire rotation, Toyota says every 10,000 oil and 5,000 tire rotation.

Not sure where you heard 20k, but as the other guys said, 10k is the recommended interval. I did my first at 3k (in my driveway), and my second at 10k (first of the two included with Toyota Care). I'll probably go 5k-7.5k. I do think it gets a little wasteful and unnecessary to do it more frequently than 5k with modern lubricants, but there's still a feel good factor if you do it more frequently than 10k. Turbos get hot and the new engine uses small ones that spin fast.

Thanks for clarifying it guys! I will take my Toyota in every 5,000 miles for the free maintenance up to 10,000 miles.

I sent a sample to blackstone at 5k for mine. My TBN rating was still very high at 4.0, but had high break in metals (to be expected). Based on that, for my style of driving, I think a 5k interval is potentially helpful for break in but unnecessary for regular changes. I'll try for 7k+ next time and see what the data says.

NA motor that sees normal duty, cool with 10k oci. Most of my fleet falls into that. NA that sees heavier duty, 5k OCI, my 2019 gets that due to towing duties. Turbo motor? 3-5k oci if it were me. Too much extra stress on the oil in a turbo. And your turbos life depends on a supply of clean oil. Ask any Subaru owner.

Everyone has their own opinion, but I’m firmly in the 1k initial and every 5k camp.

Do the math. Is 5K worth piece of mind? If you will trade in a few years, who cares? Turbos are harder on the oil. Owned 5 Saabs and 4 Subarus. More was better for us.

Full synethtic is a waste for anything less than 7500 miles, I do think 10k is rather long but I am of the 2.5k initial change and then 7-8kafterwards

I was going to post exactly this. You beat me to it.

What can you more easily afford:

1.) A new V35A-FTS and labor to pull the bad one and install the new one?

    Or…

2.) Oil and filter changes with a Denso filter and a high quality full synthetic oil every 5000 miles?

Seems kind of easy to answer. If you can’t afford to do regular OCI’s on the new Tundra then your budget is clearly stretched too thin to buy a new truck anyway.

Lol, I run premium fuels in all my turbo rides, the only one I oil change at low mile interverals is my sports car since it is based on time not mileage. It gets castrol edge 5w30 every 6 months.

Again, you can run Blackstone labs and all the 5k oil change interverals you want. If you like wasting money and feel better then by all means proceed. Full synethtics and premium synetics can go 10k and even 20k miles at times before it breaks down. German cars have been doing these oil change interverals for years and I was surprised by toyotas 10k mile recommendation. Unless you are towing 10k pounds or running offroad all the time then 7-10k interverals in more than enough.

Do not agree, but to each their own. Turbos are really hard on oil and I’d rather be safe than sorry. If I’m wrong, at worst I’m out some time and a small amount of money (as a percentage of the price of the truck). Anyone running 10k+ OCI’s in a relatively high strung turbo motor is nuts IMHO. At the end of the day though, it’s all a matter of what each individual is comfortable with.

Royal Purple makes good oil filters, not paper based so it'll last throughout the entire long oil change interval.

Car Nut advises against using non Oem filters as Toyota filters designed for Toyota with specific flow numbers... So you may not always do better by trying to be a smart ass and go aftermarket. It's best to stick to 5k oil changes with regular synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 and Oem filters.

I worked at a BMW dealership once upon a time.

I have observed first hand what extended OCI’s look like and how well the engines hold up.

You do you, and I’ll wish you the best of luck.

As for me I will change oil much more frequently. There’s a reason German cars are hot garbage where long term reliability is concerned.

You do you, I noticed in the app the first oil change was to be 6 months or 5k miles and then 10k or a year after that. You can change your oil every 1k to 2k miles it is up to you all but to think your engine will fail just because you follow toyotas maintenance schedule is not correct. Ethanol is harder on engines than long period oil changes. Amsoil makes a 20k mile synthetic, synthetic oil actually allows for longer extended change interverals.

I had my oil changed at 2200 miles and then plan to change the oil at 7-8k mile interverals after that, I was speaking of the toyota app recommended maintenance under the tab within the app. Wix xp filters are made for synethtic oil so is Amsoil oil which states that it can go with extended oil change interverals uo to 20k miles. You can debate this till the cows come, go to bob is the oil guy and read about oils. You can pay for Blackstone analysis all you want it isn't going to make your vehicle last any longer. Dealerships service centers want you changing it at every 5k to make more money but toyota says 10k, I will follow what toyota recommends and then change my oil at 7-8k miles. I can usually tell when it is time for an oil change anyway but I have a 150k mile warranty on the truck as well so I definitely have to get the oil changed according to to toyota within a year or10k miles.

I think the ole “NA V8 vs TT V6” topic might give the oil change interval discussion a run for its money for the “most debated” award.

You say modern synthetics can easily go 10-20k OCI, but you do yours at 7-8k? Why?

Why am I wasting money, but you’re not? For the record “I will follow what toyota recommends and then change my oil at 7-8k miles” is not following what Toyota recommends…. You say you’re surprised Toyota recommended 10k, but didn’t say what you thought they should have recommended, so one can only assume you meant longer than 10k. Yet you change yours at 7-8k…. :monocle:

EDIT: I’m speaking purely in regards to the 3rd Gen Tundra with the TTv6. I used to occasionally stretch OCI’s out to 7500 miles or so on my old 4Runner, but that was a N/A v8. I’d personally never go past 5k on a turbo motor, but that’s just me.
