Toyota announced a recall of 2023 Tundra on 2/22/23 because of a problem with the display screen for the speedometer going completely white while driving. This actually happened to my dad once while he was driving my truck. So I took it to a dealership the next day after the recall. A mechanic drove it around back. An hour and a half later, I was told that they couldn't fix it. They called corporate and were told they hadn't release a software update yet. I was told that they would call me when the update is released which would probably be next week. I still haven't heard from them yet.

What have you guys heard about this? Has this problem happened to any of you? Have any of you guys gotten the software update yet?

Thank you the information! I read the thread about this issue and saw that someone posted that they got the software update installed the day after the recall. So I called the dealership and was given a different story. They said the mechanic couldn't install the update last time because thier laptop wasn't working right but they think they have it figured out now. So I'm going to let them try it again.

In the pecking order, recalls are better than unresolved problems that are never fixed. Software update recall are very low on the impact pecking order.

I won't buy a third gen purely due to the embarrassment of what the front end looks like. But, to answer your question, I also never owned a Yugo but still somehow know it was a reliability disaster. Never owned a Range Rover, a Pontiac Aztec, a Hummer H2, a Cadillac Catera, anything that starts with the word Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep.

That’s odd. I lose to most V6’s. I lose to most 3-cylinder’s. Generally when I arrive at the next red light and the 16 year old next door realizes I wasn’t racing. But again, my issue with the 3rd Gen is it’s embarrassing looks. I absolutely would have bought one based on everything else it offered and Toyota’s history of reliability but that was also thrown out the window with the multitude of issues. But I’m old now and my reaction time is not what it used to be but I’d bet my lakehouse that my 4.8 0-60 Supercharged grandpa truck would treat yours like it’s big sister, the Tacoma.

IDK, recalls to me are great ( within reason of course). Free work, potential problems averted, companies taking ownership of issues, all that jazz.

Is anyone aware of any vehicles in the last 20 some years that never had a recall?

You surprised a new generation vehicle has a software recall? You must not had seen how many recalls the 2016 Tacoma had when it came out. It happens. At least they admitted to it being an issue and brought it to buyers attention before it becoming a huge issue. Move on. When the update is ready, you’ll get a new letter stating the remedy is ready.

While there are 3 recalls on 2012 Tundras I am aware of, my VIN was never subject to any of them.

Don't argue with that guy man. He's just too old and doesn't get it anymore. He always comes in to these threads just to shitpost some hate. If you argue, he'll put up some random illogical opinion-trying-to-be-pushed-as-fact to try and drag people down to his level so he can flex and try to be the man again, but his time is over. Just enjoy your shit. I'm like you. I couldn't care less about the reliability of something. I'm in it to have a good-ass time. I own a Tundra not because of reliability, but because I saw Ivan Stewart do what he did in a Toyota. Raptor and Powerwagon are much better trucks, but I still can't unsee the Ivan Stewart Iron Man poster in my room as a kid.

But he has a truck that will do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds ! That’s almost faster than a new Rav4 hybrid !

Hell yes. Love that poster. Sorry, I keep forgetting we’re not allowed on this forum to say anything negative about the 3rd Gen. It’s the best truck ever. I think the Ram forums also have that rule. It’s also the best truck ever.

I don’t have a new Tundra…..don’t plan on buying one as I’m perfectly satisfied with my 2018. Just tired of seeing people lose their shit over something so simple. Seems like you need to relax a little.

Id also rather have issues resolved. Some people don't like it when a newer truck comes out. Who cares what vehicle you drive. My 2023 Tundra can't get here soon enough. If there is an issue I'll have a loaner while it's resolved. What's the other option a 4 year old truck that cost more than it was 3 years ago? I just sold my F150 for 3k more than I paid for it 3 years ago. This time will pay a little more but need a new truck.

why are you lurking around a 3rd Gen Forum if it’s so “embarrassing”?
You're like the guy who swears he’s not going to support his cities football team but shows up every Sunday to watch again and again lol

Don’t argue with idiots. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. If you respond, these snowflakes will clutch their pearls and default to “muh free speech!” They don’t understand that doesn’t mean people can’t say something back to their lunacy.

You have to remember, some of these people are have their entire identity wrapped around a fucking vehicle of all things. As such, they have nothing better to do than to try and shit on others that we don’t bow down to a platform that was designed damn near two (or three) decades ago. They want you to argue with them as their identity is stuck behind a damned truck and you arguing only further justifies in their mind that they are right.

Everyone that comments on my truck always mentions how bad ass the grill looks. I was shocked by the grill at first but now think the previous year model grills look strangely small. Stockholm Syndrome maybe.

Since I started this post I think I should add an update. After my second trip the dealership, I got the software update. I don't think software updates are a major problem but having to waste over 5 hours of my very limited free time with two visits to a dealership is a huge problem. Someone told me that Tesla averages one software update every month and its done through the cellular networks without requiring the owner to go to the dealership. I really like my new Tundra so far but Toyota needs to get with the modern world and enable software updates that don't require a visit to the dealership.

Sounds frustrating. To update the info you can do that at the Toyota website with a USB. It probably also has ability to do it wirelessly but I don't have experience with it and my last truck it was best to use the thumb drive to install updates.

    https://www.toyota.com/firmware-updates

For the engine, transmission, etc, would need to take it to the dealership if there is a problem. So likely won't need to do that again and would likely just be a PCM update that can get done when it's being serviced.

Somewhere, somebody said the engine/trans/etc sw update is finicky and one can brick the ECM if not careful. Sounds like Toyota needs to up their game on implementing OTA updates and making sure that ECMs don't get bricked. I wonder if there is some fed regulations on ECM updates though...so that us owners can't mess with it. Just wondering..

yeah thats a chance i would never take on a vehicle. laptops/desktops (i build) i can pretty much recover even if bricked since most come with a secondary bios. no way i am touching my vehicles.

your a brave person doing those yourself ryan :)
