I am new here and bought my first ever Truck a few weeks ago. 2024 Tundra Platinum, I love it. But. I can't seem to average more than 15.2 miles per gallon in the city in ECO and the AC is not very strong. Even on high and my vents are open. My other vehicles, a person could blow dry their hair, it comes out so strong.

Eco mode is an EPA joke, only good for highway cruising at best. (I see no difference)
Also reduces the A/C system output.
Normal mode gives me much better mpg for mixed use.

Read up on the -2 degree change to A/C settings using the Carista App. Made a big difference in my truck.

15.2 is much better than what I’m getting. My daily commute is only 6 miles and my tank average is 13.8

I've seen the -2 degree change post. But that only effects the temperature don't it? I think they're talking about the amount of air or force of the air that comes out of the vents.

I bought a 2024 Hybrid Tundra Platinum last November (2023) and a couple months later my wife bought a 2024 Hybrid Sequoia TRD pro. Her car consistently gets about 2-3 MPG better than my truck even though the truck is lighter. We took a two hour mixed-road trip recently (mostly freeway, some back roads) and drove both cars, same speed, both in Eco etc. The Sequoia got 22.7 MPG and the Tundra got 20. Any ideas? I told the dealer and they checked what they could but said nothing stood out.

Maybe the aerodynamics are better on the sequoia?

Mileage will continue to improve thru 10K Mi. Max highway mpg is below 70mph. I leave it in Eco all the time. Have found no increase using Norm in town. Eco shifts up earlier which keeps rpm down and out of turbo boost which when boosting uses more fuel. A/C - This Tundra has the same system as we had in our Venza. We found that Auto should not be used when you need Max A/C. For max A/C run it in fully manual mode. Set A/C compressor to On, set your own fan speed, set temp to LO, set your own vent outputs, set intake to Fresh initially to vent the cab and then to Recirculate. Regulate with fan speed. Others have noted this solved their weak AC issue. I have not used the Carista calibration adjustment as it already freezes us out in manual mode.

Ratios are a thing. Toyota groups rarely talk about them because Toyota offers no options. In the big 3 groups they are a topic since there are options to pick and MPGs can vary a couple miles from the low axle to the higher ratio options.

I think Tundra has a 4.3:1 rear axle ratio. The Sequoia has a 3.31:1. Lower ratios are geared for fuel economy and high ones for grunt and torque. The difference between the Tundra and Sequoia ratios are very big.

Personally my previous Ram EcoD with 3.92 rear end option maxed out at 27-28 mpg on interstate. Co worker with the exact same truck and 3.21 rear end easily got low 30s consistently on the interstate. Mine would destroy him off the line or hauling a trailer.

And possible the tranny programming is different for the same mpg vs mpg prioritization in models with different missions

Same engine and tranny in the exact same configuration in the same vehicle will get different mpg just based on differences in rear end ratio.

Add in the tranny programming, aero, and other variables and it is an apples to oranges comparison. But the rear end ratio is an important one to mpg.

    the 2nd gen had a 4.30 final

the 3rd gen has a lower numerically rear end @ 3.31 overall.

    Ratios
    1st gear 4.92
    2nd gear 3.26
    3rd gear 2.35
    4th gear 1.94
    5th gear 1.53
    6th gear 1.19
    7th gear 1.00
    8th gear 0.80
    9th gear 0.66
    10th gear 0.61
    Reverse 4.30
    Axle ratio 3.31

also the new sequoia has the same gear ratios as the tundra

sorry forgot to add this is for the 4x4 spec.

    i know on the 2ng gen the 4x2 had a 4.10 final ratio vs the 4x4 with a 4.30

I too have my truck in ECO while driving and noticed that when I have my AC set at 65 or 70 it isn’t cool much. Then when it gets even hotter mid day you can forget it. I’d have to set the temp to LO and you can actually feel the AC change and immediately cool down. After reading maybes it’s because I’m in ECO mode. So will go drive around today and change to normal and see if there’s a difference. I personally hate having the AC on LO feels like the AC system working harder for that temp. Prefer 65 or 70.

I would stay out of ECO if you require optimum HVAC. Try in NORMAL then use manual mode AC and I expect you will see favorable results.

Yup, short commutes net me single digit MPG’s. Getting to daycare is less than 2 miles one way. Usually shows 8-9mpg there. The way back is usually 11-13mpg as the engine and transmission come up to temp. If I strictly drove this for an entire tank I’d probably be around 10-11mpg. My 2018 Tacoma got about 14.5mpg doing this route over and over.

If Eco mode is the same as the 2021 Sienna I had, it limits fan speed to save energy. I stopped using eco because of it and really didn’t see any mpg difference.

Short trips kill mpg no matter the vehicle.

I just did 60 mile round trip in rural back roads last night my v-8 tundra averaged 18.4 mpg in this 45 to 65 mph driving. The best so far! My 2018 Expedition 4x4 with 6 speed transmission and 3.5l eco boost would get near 22mpg. I’d expect your Tundra to be the same.

I’ve been running a lot of tests. I did 400 miles round trip on the freeway today (so much fun…).
In stop and go traffic under 65, eco mode with radar cruise control is the best MPG of all modes, with or without cruise control. However the difference was only 1.5 MPG the biggest difference was ECO with radar cruise control was the most comfy, no jerkiness.

Over 65mph I found the best gas mileage for me is in sport mode, throw my shifter into the manual mode and once I’m cruising I shift to the highest gear, often S10 but occasionally S9 or S8 depending on how fast I’m cruising.

This got me 4 more MPG than other modes at higher speeds.

24 Limited Off-Road here, no AVS. I had no gear on my truck today, basically stock weight. I have 35s and roughly a 2.5inch lift up front and stock height rear, lift up front is new coils, shocks/resi’s and UCA. I will be heading on a trip of similar distance this next week, with around 2000-2500 of armor/gear on the truck. I’ll run some tests to see if it’s similar results.

Curious if anyone notices the same?

Are you certain your truck goes into 10th using the manual mode? I ask because in the Car Scanner app I monitor what gear it's in. And even though the dash says it's in 10 when using manual mode to get it there, Car Scanner stays at 9 and I can't "feel" it change into 10th. There was another discussion here a while back that was saying you need to be doing like 85mph before the truck will go into 10th on it's own. I tried once for a short distance at that speed and it stayed in 9th. That manual mode is a complicated beast. The owners manual talks about it and others here seem to know how it works better than I do, but my basic understanding is that the computer rules all and won't let you do something it doesn't like. I'm sure someone else will chime in and let me know if I'm missing something.

Very interesting. I am only sure as the dash in front of me, it says S10…. That being said I cannot feel my tundra really shift through gears unless I’m tow+ pedal to the floor, even then it’s so silent compared to say a 5 Series BMW.

A lot of the driving I was doing on this trip was between 78-83 mph.

Kinda off topic, what’s the car scanner app?

It's an app that connects via Bluetooth to an OBD dongle. It lets you scan for check engine codes etc. It also has a customizable dashboard where you can display different parameters like trans temp., oil temp, etc. If you use Car Play or android auto, you can display it on the big screen.
