Thoughts…the mpg’s for a half ton is intriguing. I drove one today and 2024 tundra and the GMC impressed me. I feel like I’m cheating on my wife. Thoughts on the baby duramax? The SLT trim is about 3k cheaper than a limited Tundra. I really wanna be team Toyota…but the damn GMC is calling me. Talk me out of it..please!

They are nice. My buddy had one and it got 23.5mpg driving like an idiot. Got over 27mpg on trips. Lots of power. If you don’t plan to keep it long term, go for it. I would not want to be around when it’s time to change the oil pump belt.

Came from Gm trucks. Never again and they truly don’t care (GM) after you buy their pile of you know what. It will fall apart after 5 years guaranteed. Good luck. Ya still bitter towards them. 14’ Sierra and 17’ Colorado constantly in service dept.

My BILs 18 Sierra 6.2 is a paperweight in his driveway rn. Collapsed lifter cylinder 5. Has a horrendous knock. A little worried what we’ll find when we open it up.

2014 gmc 5.3 drove me away from GM products for the last time. Bought it new. It broke on day one and kept breaking over and over from there.

No thank you. My time is worth more to me than that truck.

I know @ColoradoTJ knows a bit about GMC/Chevy and could perhaps provide more input.

I’ve had nothing but success with my chevy’s. As has my immediate and extended family. And these are modern ones. They’ve got their bugs just like these trucks do but there’s plenty of aftermarket support to work around them.

That said, I wouldn’t buy a modern diesel unless you had plans to delete it. Way too much crap to fail on them. Although the thought of literally double the mileage I get right now is enticing as is the sound and torque, just not worth the headache.

If the lease rate had worked out we would be in a Yukon XL right now with the baby d max… but it was crazy high so we bought a 21 Seqouia TRD pro. Love those baby D’s, but wouldn’t want to “own” one

I just bought one a month ago. It is absolutely fantastic! I really really love it so far, but do not have a ton of time on it yet. Me and the wife test drove a Limited trim Tundra, but went with the GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation with 3.0 Duramax.

In mixed driving so far, I am averaging 25.7 MPG. I have taken two trips with it. One coming home from Illinois, one going to Lexington, KY and back to Knoxville. I am averaging 29.7 to 30.5 on highway road trips. All mileage is verified when I fill up, not on the dash. The trip readings are actually about .5 lower than what I get by hand calculation.

Ask away any questions you might have.....

Can't say I share the same experience, but I also don't champion "most" of the 1500 lineup. The 3.0 DM seems to be doing rather well long term. I would not recommend a 5.3/6.2 with AFM (or any motor).

Most likely a bad camshaft, which in turn sends hard metal throughout the motor.
Pull motor and rebuild or buy crate motor without AFM. This is what you will have to break it down to and hopefully you have the kit to align everything back up.

Personally, I would buy an LS3 crate motor.

He maintancne is a concern as well reliability. I have tried hard to like the new tundra. But after seeing it and driving it, I don’t really see any advantages to it besides a new vehicle. On the flip side…I have been GM hater since my 04 Silverado. My wife has had several issues with her Chevys and Cadillac. I really can’t see GMC being any different. I don’t really need 2 vehicles. Such a conundrum.

If you don't plan on towing a bunch over 10k, the gas 6.6L/10 Speed Alison combo is pretty hard to beat.

Wife’s had two Suburbans and they’ve been great. Had to sell first one when we moved to Japan as they wouldn’t allow us to bring it. Current one has 310K miles and been a great car. Only annoyance is the vortec tick. If we ever get a new one will probably remove that thing that disables half the cylinders

Nothing…I am about to have to start commuting again for work. About 75 miles a day. I am averaging a little over 13 mpg’s now.

Sounds like you need a commuter vehicle. If I had not purchased my Lexus, the mileage on my Duramax would be around 220k miles instead of 99k.

Awesome, those are great little cars, safe and reliable. Should be able pick one up for good value depending on year and mileage. Good luck with your hunt

Do the math on that carefully. Even if you get 23 mpg with the new truck, double check how long it would take you to break even on the purchase. Buying a new vehicle to save money on fuel rarely actually works out.

And don’t forget to include all the tax title license, insurance fees and depreciation in your calculations. It’s all those sneaky extras that get ya.
