Thinking about buying a 2024 Tundra. I test drove a 2024 SR5 Crewmax TRD Off Road 4X4. I like the truck but was shocked when I saw the Consumer Reports rating for 22 and 23 Tundra's.
Consumer Reports does not recommend the Tundra and rates it below Dodge, Ford, Nissan and GM. I understand that any new model vehicle will have some bugs to work out. I've always felt that Toyota builds the best and still do. I'm looking for opinions of people that own them. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks

Consumer reports is good at rating toasters , not trucks

buy the tundra and be happy

pro tip, if you tow , get the load leveling rear

    good luck

Every system on the truck is new to the 22+ models from frames, engines and transmissions, down to the infotainment software and hardware. Consumer reports counts any complaint against the vehicle. Fair, but a buggy infotainment can crater an otherwise well performing vehicles overall score. So take the CR for what it is. There are some bugs in the new platform that are getting worked out. Seems most are very happy with them.

I'll second that notion I too have a Capstone for 10 months and 12K and had the radio knob failure and that's it.
More than very pleased with this truck,I was a Chevy guy and made the change and haven't looked back.

Best of luck with your choice of tuck.

Buy the extended warranty for peace of mind. There are plenty of 3rd gens driving around with zero issues. In this day and age people complain about anything and everything. I’d trust my 3rd gen tundra over any new production half ton on the market currently. Plus it’s a huge improvement tech and power wise compared to my 3rd gen Tacoma (and if you go onto that forum you will read a bunch of people having issues too).

Ive read many reviews that listed the Tundra below the others. But they are comparing things that are not of top importance to me. I don’t care if one has more towing, or more horsepower, or payload, etc….

I care about the quality that has been Toyota. My 24 Tundra has been my 4th Toyota. I care about what this truck will be like in 7 years (cost of ownership, repairs, etc). I care about resale value and build quality.

I didn’t blink an eye pulling the trigger. I wouldn’t have had the same confidence buying another brand.

Below Dodge, Ford, Nissan and GM? :monocle::) Despite any "bugs", real or perceived, Toyota is better engineered, and better built than those mentioned, in my subjective, yet humble opinion. I say buy the Tundra and enjoy it. If you buy one of the others, it would be my recommendation to have a plan to be rid of it before it runs out of warranty.

Had a 2022 Platinum with gremlins. Tailgate popped open 4 times (once while driving). Hesitant acceleration from a stop, "lane indicators" drove me crazy. Always with "check back seat issues" trim falling off.

After 22,000 miles traded it on a 2024 1794 and could not be happier

My tailgate sometimes pops open in the garage when I am working out there, and I bend over and the tailgate button gets accidentally depressed.

CR wants the entire word in Camrys and Accords. I think they may also find Subaru wagons to be suitable transportation but find the WRX to be loud and stiff riding.

I’m 3 months into ownership of a ‘24 TRD Pro and I’ve had a completely satisfying experience so far. I moved over from a ‘17 Tacoma TRD Off Road and am so glad I did. I had my doubts and second guesses but I love the performance of this 3rd gen Tundra. The fit and finish is as good if not better than any of the 3 Toyota trucks I’ve owned to date. As far as the price tag well…but let’s be honest nothing has remained/returned to ‘normal’ levels since COVID. Unfortunately this is the new normal whether you’re buying vehicles or potato chips.

I traded a 2018 Ram 1500 Express 5.7L, with only 69K miles for a '24 Tundra SR5 XP 2x4. The Ram had begun making the notorious ticking sound only at startup, which increasingly got worse. Was diagnosed to a couple failing lifters on the right side with a potential $5500 repair bill. Had 2 Tacoma's previously, both with over 300K miles and still running when I sold them. Have had the Tundra for only 1 month, but it is definitely more truck than the Ram. My vote is to buy the Tundra and be thankful.

I agree with this and think as importanly Toyota is still the best game in town for fixing a problem. Go to the big three dealers and see how many trucks they have waiting for parts.

    What’s wrong with stock?
Don’t think about it and get one. I have a 22 SR5 OR that I got new in Sept 22. No problems with it. To many people make a big deal about non issues. Unfortunately you hear more about the negatives than the positives, and Toyota has plenty of positives. I’ve owned plenty of different vehicles and different brands. They all have issues.

My wife has a 2001 4runner with 250K+ miles and my next door neighbor bought a Sequoia at the same time and has 350K+ miles. Both are daily drivers. That’s a testament to the durability of the Toyota products. They last forever

And we bark about an infotainment system…. I remember the days of pulling over and kicking the dirt for ten minutes by the pay phone hoping a dime shined.

So true. And if you found the dime, you could only make a local call or had to call collect.

When I purchase any vehicle or pc of capital equipment I look at the total view. CR is one data point that I believe is a bit skewed because the lack of data. What I do depend on are the mechanics face to face opinions, and sources like You tube like "The car care nut". The point, opinion based on fact, people seeing and repairing trucks on the road. Not a blog or music jammed opinion YouTube videos that offers only descriptive opinion not fact. I purchased a Toyota this time because my needs change and the related motor, trans (unappreciated), axles and suspension fit the my present requirements. Decent fuel mileage, no turbo lag. Good HP and Torque. Whether we like or not equipment is becoming more complex but it is moving towards efficient operation. I remember when the whole world was going to fall apart when the industry transitioned to fly by wire throttles.

I purchased Ram because of Cummins the motor was the best money could buy. Not because it was RAM. When RAM switch to 6.7L Variable Turbo the opinion mill was not favorable, and a bad batch of water pumps and idler tensioners, but I got over 400,000 miles on those trucks and they are still pulling equipment trailers with John Deere and Kubota tractors.

I purchased a Toyota because of the motor, trans, axles and build quality. I just installed a set of floor boards, while I was under the truck I was impressed the quality, the calking and rust inhibitor is similar to what was done on my past Mercedes. It is a cab on frame construction that is well thought out. I am not concern with the turbos, again because Toyota has used them quite awhile and my past experience with diesel turbos (way higher pressure). Important change the oil 5-8000 miles, Oil filter and air filter. Once the truck goes over 150000 miles I will always change the water pump and timing chain. To me not expensive because I buy the equipment that is equipped to my liking and needs and I maintain it with the intention to last 8-10 years or longer.

I wanted a very dependable truck that can tow and is comfortable,(1794 seats are like a Lexus-very comfortable). The Toyota Tundra fit the requirement. The interior components, fit and finish is a bit better that my past Ram Laramie. I purchased the TRD option for the locking rear axle.

Hope the comments help everything works out as you rationalize your purchase.

Consumer reports is also the same people who rated the 5th gen 4Runner dead last in its group. At one point they had a Dodge Journey rated higher. I would never take their reviews seriously.

In this day and age you should operate on the assumption that there are no reliable vehicles for sale. Pick what you like, buy an extended factory warranty, and move on with your life.

4 months and 6000 miles now with a '24 1794. Love the truck, drives great, rides great, descent enough gas mileage, interior fit and finish is good (it's still a Toyota, not a Lexus). My biggest complaint is the infotainment system/package. Compared to the Ram's I've been driving for the last 11 years, it sucks. I didn't spent a lot of time playing with the system before purchasing, and I don't know if it would have been a deal breaker, but I would have thought twice about it. The Ram's have a far superior product when it comes to that. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Rightfully so, it's not smart to buy the first year or two on a new model. That's most likely why they don't recommend the 2022 and 2023.

What’s the story on the motor issues some of the 2022 owners are having? I intend on buying a 2024 and keeping the thing for at least 200,000 miles. they get the problem figured out for the 2024’s?

If you search the 3rd Gen forum you will see a motor failure thread. Supposedly affected about .5% of all 3rd gen tundras built up to this point. Don’t drive yourself insane reading into all the failures as there are plenty with a bunch of miles on them already. Buy the truck and enjoy the power and tech! I bought mine with the intention of driving it for the next 10-15 years at least.

Anything and everything! If there is a post you can point me to instead that works too. Is the purpose to help with squat? Whats the purpose?

Is this offered through the dealership? I'm not able to install on my own and would want them to do it.

Is there a part number or brand recommended to install?
