I have been researching 24 Tundra to purchase in a few months. I came across some horror stories about blown engines mostly in 2022 and 2023 years. Has it ever been fixed, acknowledged by Toyota? Any other issues I should be aware of when test driving the car?

    Thanks.

Yeah, if you go onto just about any vehicle forum, you'll find horror stories and problems. I'm not discounting them for the people that experience them, but it's not the majority by any means. Sure, there have been engine failures and nobody really knows the underlying cause yet, but it is still a very small percentage of the vehicles sold.

Here is a solid piece of advice....if the engine blows up on the test drive maybe don't buy that one.... idk man thats a pretty broad question. Dig around here and read up and make the decision for your self.

That's what I have been doing for 2 days now. Consensus is there is no fix or acknowledgement from Toyota. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything since there are tons of information and easy to miss something.

Yep, no formal acknowledgement from Toyota in regards to the engine issues. Nothing is going to be perfect, but there are plenty of people on here who really enjoy their trucks. IMO, I wouldn't spend too much time trying to go down the rabbit hole of the issues people have had. You'll have a failed engine, throttle lag, rear end whine, squealing brakes, a broken radio knob, misaligned bumper, and a cracked driver's seat before you even take it for a test drive. :)

If you want peace of mind stop reading the forums. Not to sound harsh but that is just the way it is. For every 1 positive post there are 10 negative post. Social media has given everyone a voice and they will spew info to the masses whether it is right or wrong. For every engine failure there are thousands of owners who have no issues. Quite a few 2022 trucks have already hit 100k miles or are over it. Sure those people drive a lot but until Toyota officially releases something we will never know the scale of this. Every toyota that has had a redesign has had issues and Toyota corrected them and the later model years are usually rock solid. Go into the 3rd gen Tacoma forum and read about the engine failures of the 3.5 V6. There a multiple cases of that, some failed at 60k some at later miles and just like the tundra forum people were freaking out. But if you buy a 3rd gen tundra and read the stories that are posted or watch the videos online you will just drive yourself insane and think “when will it happen to me”. Hope that helps out your mind at ease.

Oh and a side note, when on the test drive put the truck in Tow+ mode and you’ll be smiling ear to ear.

All modern vehicles have problems but the difference with Toyota is they have a reputation of standing by their product, with this new gen tundra, it seems from what I’ve read, you either have a good one or you have a bad one. If you have a bad one it’s been covered under warranty and if you have a good one you have no reason to worry.

I would buy a 3rd gen tundra and not worry about it, it definitely has its issues but it’s a whole lot better then anything put out by FCA, Ford, and GM right now. I owed a 2016 Silverado before my tundra and it had to have its transmission replaced 3 times before 100k miles..

My Dad also just bought a 24 Tundra 1794 of my recommendation and he loves it. I would highly recommend just biting the bullet and buying one.

I’ve read this a few times. And this is not me at all arguing I’m just more clarifying. I’m coming from the world of an 06 Avalon and 16 Highlander lol so I’m dumb. But can you elaborate more by what you mean of stand by the product? Like beyond warranty sort of thing? Or just the bare minimum of what happens with what they have to cover with warranty etc. I guess I’m just kinda worried that like it feels like a ticking time bomb that I need to get out from under cause they all will fail eventually etc.

from my understanding Toyota will cover outside warranty if the engine fails on one of the flagged vins for the 3rd gen Tundra.

However, I feel that generally in the past Toyota is better about sticking by their product then other manufactures when they have issues. Any issue that a Toyota that my family has owned has been resolved by the manufacturer while other manufacturers have refused to do anything.
For example is the lifters on the gm motors, gm has shipped motors with failures built in since 2007 and has not offered any real fix. Another example from GM is the 8L90 transmission in my Silverado, they never admitted any fault and mine was rebuilt 3 times before 100k miles. A transmission that requires rebuilding 3 times before 100k miles is ridiculous…

Thank you for further elaboration. It just helps me with the context of it. If they go beyond that to stand by their product. That definitely would help with peace of mind. Appreciate the response!

I started a post yesterday about those on the forum that have had no major issues regardless of year: Year and miles with no major issues - let's hear about 'em | Toyota Tundra Forum (tundras.com).

In a world where many people will post mainly negative experiences, my hope is to shed light on the MANY people that have had no major issues. Rarely do those individuals post "hey, I love my truck". As mentioned, the major issues that have been reported while serious may be blown out of proportion because we tend to escalate and extend conversations about these issues making them seem not only probable but inevitable (not to discount those that do have issues and hope they get things fixed quickly). In reality, almighty Toyota is not void of issues as these machines are produced in roughly 24 hours on an assembly line. But, I think the Tundra is an aggressive player in the 1/2 ton market. Overall, I think time is the only thing that can heal many concerns on this forum and as 3rd gen owners continue to rack up trouble free miles, hopefully then we can all feel better about the perception of reliability of these trucks.

    What is your risk tolerance?
If zero, or lower, then drop a couple of grand on the Factory platinum warranty that will take you to 10 years or 125,000 miles.

I bought a 2024 limited in March. I love this truck! I feel like the king of the road! Everyone has to make up their own mind about a vehicle. It is easy to get worried about problems when spending a lot of money but we have warranties to cover most issues….just my 2c. Take one for a test ride do the same with other companies and make up your mind. I am glad I got the Tundra

I have a 22 that is on the affected list and Im looking at it this way. Since the recall is out Im gonna live like Im just "Borrowing" this truck until that remedy is resolved. I'm going to continue life as I do without worry... Worrying about something you have no control of just adds wrinkles to your skin and age on your life!

Well this is a first in my lifetime. My radio knob broke off today as it's done for some others. All I did was turn the volume up after getting in the truck. Upon further inspection it's attached by such a thin plastic shaft. Never thought that would happen but oh well.

Well, better to break a shaft on a truck knob than your own... :)

Put some heat shrink tube in to reinforce the replacement.

I bought a 24 Tundra SR5 TRD Offroad Premium back in Apirl for sticker price a little shy of 64k, around 1.8k miles atm with no issues or recalls on mines. I opted for the non-hybrid because I just thought that was to much issues going on with the Turbos including Hybrid, I don't want to imagine the cost when you need to replace the battery. I know there's going to be people who are against it, but I love my Tundra. I came from a 2020 4Runner TRD Offroad with KDSS and now I finally realize how cool the KDSS system was. The ride for the tundra is more rough (bumpy/body roll) and I was not used to that due to the KDSS on the 4Runner. Other than that, I an now ok with the ride quality.

How do you remove the volume knob without breaking it? Was thinking maybe to remove mine and put the tubing on it as a proactive measure..

Toyota's field report has approx. 800 cases of issues with the 22-23. As far as the 24 I think there is close to zilch, but nothing in terms of catastrophic failures.
Idk man, I really wouldn't be taking social media posts with a grain of salt. A lot of the groups I'm on in fb, there's people who we find later on don't even own the truck posting random issues with the truck. Personally I've had a very good experience with the 24. 8,000 miles and counting.
Just obnoxious to see the power of social media. Once one person has an issue, its magnified to look like EVERYONE has an issue.

I have a 2024, the only real problems I have is the body trim panels fit like aftermarket. I got lucky. Only noticeable in a few places. My brothers plastic caps are falling off.

weatherstripping installation was done poorly around the windows. Almost like they didn’t use enough adhesive or it didn’t cure properly during the installation process.

the only other things that bug me are personal preference related. I could use stiffer rear suspension for towing, I could have a lot more power. (I didn’t get the hybrid)

all around pretty decent truck. I’m coming from a 2019 6 inch lift 37” tire off roading tundra though. My 2024 is strictly a work truck.
