I have a silly question regarding my 22-gal tank. The other day my truck has exactly 150 miles til empty left which is half a tank of gas. I filled it up and it took 15.8 gals of gas to fill the tank and get the range back up 300 miles till empty. My question is when I am half full showing 150 miles till empty. I only have 6.2 gals in the tank. or do I have a bigger tank than I thought? I let go empty(almost) I am pretty sure it took 28.4 gals to fill. I am just a little confused because if that is the case I should be more in the 300-mile range with a full tank

There has been a lot of discussions on find forum from what I’ve seen about how large of a reserve the gen 3 tundra has and whether or not the “miles to empty” is accurate. I don’t know the exact size of the reserve but I’ve experienced the same thing with my 32 gallon tank in my limited gen 3 and the most I can put in it is the mid 20 gallon range but I also don’t drive until absolute empty. I also track all my fill ups on Fuelly. Definitely recommend the app if you’re into tracking how much gas the truck fills up.

All Toyota trucks have had a large reserve, my 2016 38 gallon one was huge as well

they plan on worst case scenarios of towing and getting 7-8 mpg or something and you run out quick in some parts of the country

    it isn’t a big deal

I remember a video with the gen 3 capstone where some pretty popular YouTube guys took a tundra and towed something like 10,000lbs up a gauntlet and got about 8mpg. I’m willing to bet that’s accurate. I agree it’s not a big deal. I’d rather have more gas displayed than less.

The DTE is always very conservative. Toyota advertises the actual capacity, not when it will tell you that you are empty. There are two sizes. If you put more than 22 gallons in your truck at any time then you have the larger tank. Period.

Thank you, everyone, for the info. I Have a 22 Limited and if I do have a 32 gal tank why am always showing 300 miles to empty on a full tank

The range is calculated from your fuel economy and the tank capacity minus the fuel reserve. So the 32 gal tank has like a 6 gal reserve. If you’re getting only 300 miles of range, your fuel economy would be like 11.5 mpg. Is that right?

I have been busy with my wife's honey-due list, and have not had time to check in lately. You are correct I have been averaging around 11.5 mpg.

Thanks! I was w....wwww.....wrong....again. I wonder why I can only get 22 gallons into my tank when it says it's empty. Is that because of the "reserve" people talk about?

My 33 gallon tank when filled shows around 420 DTE and I typically average 16 mpg with mixed driving and trailer hauling.

True, that. I've never had the light go on. I've been going by the DTE for fillups.

    Nitrogen filled tires!
If you have a Standard SR5 model - no optional upgrade packages (TRD, Off Road, Convenience Package) then you have a 22.5 gallon tank. If you upgraded to any of the packages noted you got the 33 gallon tank.

FYI - if your fuel gauge shows 3/4 full and never seems to drop lower you should document (pics) and call your dealer about the Fuel Gauge TSB - my 2023 does this and it is the same problem the 2022's have for which the TSB was released.

I am at a loss. how can I have a standard 32-gas tank and only get 300 for DTE on a full tank?
I have checked my window sticker and my purchase paperwork and I cannot find my tank size :frusty:

You definitely have the 32 gal tank, you’re just getting 1/2 the fuel economy of other trucks. If you want to check for yourself, look under the passenger side. The 32 gal tank spans nearly the entire length between the rear axle to near the back side of the transmission.

Well the 35" heavy tires and level kit doesn't help with mpg. and Toyota likes to have a ~6 gal reserve.

Thank you, everyone, for the great information. Should I take it to the dealer and have the gas gauge checked? I have a 2200-mile trip in two weeks.

I would fill it, park it kind of level and unplug the battery for at least an hour first.

If you have the smaller tank the low fuel lights comes on and at the pump you get almost 18 gallons in. I think only the SR models have that fit a total of 22.5 gallons roughly. Range isn’t good if you’re towing or have a long commute.

Update.... I took my truck to the dealer and they did a software update and now my full tank showed 421 miles til empty, However, the next time I filled it up it showed 396 miles til empty and the next fill-up 374 miles till empty, and now it is back up to 391 miles till empty. Is anyone having the same issue?

based on sales/floor support staff here I'd say 0.01% of them know shit about the electronics and setup 99.99% of the members here are yearning to learn - @ryanwgregg is single person owner/member I would say has the most knowledge. As you suggest a training course in the "how to" for these trucks would be a wise and valuable use of time by the Dealers and owners. JMO based on my experience with my Gen3.

Makes sense about the previous fill-ups, Yea, that's about right, my dealer just set up my Toyota app on my phone and then went to his waiting customer. Did not show me one thing about the truck itself. BTW I have read through the truck's manual many, many times.:annoyed:

Actually put like 30 gallons in the other week and the light had only just come on. Not what I usually practice but this is how it worked out. Most I have ever pumped in.IMG_2059.jpg
