you should only be using 4wd when you need to and on loose material (dirt roads/snow).

only 2H unless in a winter storm. 4H will do damage if conditions are not suitable for 4H

They call that u-turn mode because it offers the highest level of turning capability - but only on hard dry surfaces..

I prefer the 4-Super Low mode with all 3 differentials locked and the FOTMFF device engaged. Guaranteed to completely fuck something up in short order.

in case you hadn't already noticed, some of us can get quite rowdy from time to time, including myself.

in all seriousness, i would absolutely NOT operate in 4 hi or 4 lo on DRY concrete.

lol, I noticed. I'm new to the truck (4x4) world so wanted to make sure I'm using it properly. Although 4L on doing donuts doesn't sound too bad.

Don't use 4H unless you actually need it. As @CMB said, read through your owners manual on how and when to use 4H and 4L. Using it incorrectly can potentially (most likely) cause some expensive damage. It's not a fun learning curve to figure out.

I had a friend at work who bought a new Wrangler. Salesrep didn't take an extra minute with her and of course she didn't bother looking at the Owner's Manual. Told us until her Brother straightened her out, she thought 4-H was for "High Snow" and 4-L was for "Low Snow":D

    Here is the deal....

When you turn a truck or car the front tires travel a distance that is different from the back tires. In fact, the inside tire on the front or back travel a distance that is different from the outside tire. Basically, every tire travels a slightly different distance. The tundra only has open differentials in the front and rear so the inside/outside thing doesn't matter but the front and back does matter. If the transfer box is locked (4H or 4L) then something has to give between the front tires and rear tires when you turn. That something is the traction between one of the front/rear tires and the road. The thing that is forcing the tires to give is the chain in the transfer box.

The chain holds the front/rear drive shafts together forcing the one tire to break traction. On pavement in turns you can really feel that tension build until a tire skips. On loose material you don't even notice. If you drive in 4H on pavement long enough, it will stretch your transfer box chain to the point it can skip teeth. This was a real problem for the early full time 4x4 trucks on the 70's.

Obviously, the chain isn't the only thing in tension or can break when you drive in 4H or 4L on pavement. U-joints, bushings, bearings, ... all feel the tension and shock loads. This is why the owners manual tells you not to do this. You can see the chain in the following diagram.

When towing the trailer with a big water tank on it at the farm, my grandfather would always tell me to shift into "bull low" - 4Lo and 1st gear on the automatic transmission - on his 1985 Ram 150 until we got up out of the muddy area around the well after filling it up.
