Howdy. I bought my truck used in January from a dealer and it only came with one key (they said they only got one key). Called my dealer today to get a quote for a new key and asked if I could get a second one since it should’ve come with the truck. They laughed and quoted me $212 for labor (lol) and 380something for the key and blade. Has anyone had any experience with an auto locksmith making a new key fob for them? Any chance it’s under $600?

When I got locked out of my jeep a couple years ago, it was ~$350 for the dude to come out, unlock it, and program me a new key, so I’m hoping that’d be the case for this truck.

I would think Toyota would have a record of whether or not the original owner got his second FOB? Maybe try a different dealer to see if they might be willing to try harder to get it for you.

I wouldn’t hold my breath. Doesn’t matter if the truck was sold new with 2 key fobs. If original owner didn’t give up the 2nd fob on trade in, you aren’t getting a freebe.

But if the original owner didn't get the second FOB, I would think there's a chance the OP could still get it. Still worth a try to find a dealer that would at least look into it.

Yeah my hope was to have some record of the original owner not getting a second key but I’m definitely not gonna wait around too long to find out. Going to call some auto locksmiths for quotes tomorrow.

https://www.google.com/search?q=202...YAgCgAgCYAwCSBwCgBwA&sclient=gws-wiz-serpWhen I got my new truck it only came with one key fob and was told would have to wait for second for several months. What i did was got online and bought one and had them program it. I did get the second key part from the dealer just not the fob. It's been several months and I can't remember the company I bought mine from but it wasn't through Toyota but was stated as a OEM fob. Just try google search for Toyota Tundra OEM fob. After I got the fob took it to the dealer and they programed it for me. That of course may cost but if it's a toyota dealer you bought the truck from they may be nice and do a courtesy program for you.

I've used a local mobile key guy to make & program a key I bought online for a rav4 my wife had. It worked out fine & was WAY cheaper. It's been years ago & I don't remember the price.

The dealership should be able to see if the original owner got the second FOB due to the chip shortage, it should be in the service history of the truck. I bought my truck new in June and I received the blade key for the second FOB and was told I'd be contacted once it was my turn for the second FOB. I got the notification and finally brought my truck in last week. When I scheduled with the service department my service receipt noted "Second key delivery program 23TJ01."
If the dealership looks up your VIN and doesn't see the second key FOB being delivered and programmed then it wasn't received and you should be able to get it, shouldn't matter that you're not the original owner. If they say they can't do that call corporate and complain, they should also be able to tell you if there was a second key issued.
As far as the blade key goes the original owner should have received that since it was only the FOB that was backordered. You may have to buy that one yourself.

Fun update. Had a guy come out today to program a new key. Tells me it’s $375 for the key and $75 to program it. I give him the ok. He then spent 4 hours trying to program the key and couldn’t get it to work so he said he’ll come back tomorrow with an oem key instead of an aftermarket key. I had no clue he was trying to program an aftermarket key, so hopefully he doesn’t murder me with labor cost on this since it was his decision to try to use an aftermarket one. We’ll see, I guess!

Did you ever check with the dealership or corporate to see if there is a record of another key being issued as I suggested? Not sure why you'd spend $450 without checking first.

2 keys or 2 keys and 2 FOBs? Everyone received 2 keys at delivery. It's the FOBs that arrived later.

    Some.
Contact the original owner and ask if they have it still. When I sold my tacoma to the dealer, I didn't have the second fob. When I found it while going through my stuff, I was able to find the new owner and give it to her. She was very happy, both that I made sure she got it and that I didn't take the truck.....

ACE hardware now is able to program fobs and cut the key. My fob for a 2021 was around $250 programmed and key cut.

Glad you checked, sucks that the original owner didn't turn it in, hope you get your spare soon.

Why is the key/fob so expensive? It looks like you can pick one up on eBay for $50-80, then have dealer or locksmith program.?. I think they budget 1.5 hours, my dealer charges $174 per hour. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=2022+toyota+tundra+key&_sacat=0&_nls=0&_dmd=2
