Hey guys! I've seen on the Tacoma forums that it's possible to convert some PreRunner models to 4wd because it's essentially set up the same. Is that a possibility with a 2006 Tundra?

If so, what all would I need to replace to make it work? Is it a feasible option?

Anything is feasible with the right amount of money. Sounds like mucho work if you ask me. It sounds like a fun project if you have tons of time and don’t mind your truck being down for a while.

Might cost less to buy a new truck and sell your old. The net would be less.

It's possible, but going to be a lot of work, especially if you don't have a donor vehicle. If you really want 4wd, might want to look at another vehicle.

Tons of info on this over on tundrasolutions. I believe JWBenninger over on yotatech has done it also although some of this info may be overlapping. I believe most of these guys have done it to AC's.

I'm convinced that I will do this within the next two years. I'm going to start collecting parts next year if possible, the hard part to get is a year specific writing harness. Toyota changed plugs a few times, I'm not sure if 06 is unique or if it shares with 05. 03 is definetly unique so my truck will be an adventure.

If you're mechanically inclined it doesn't look particularly hard, I bet it could be done in 3 days or less. If you're thinking of paying for labor then heed the naysayers advice.
