I never paid attention to the skid plates on my truck until I was installing my leveling kit. It’s a flimsy piece of crap plastic. The build sheet specifically says skid plat, not splash guard. What does y’all’s look like? Is that right?

Ya. Better then nothing but not really a “plate” in my mind. At least you have another layer between the gas tank and rocks..

Pretty sure a skid plate means something more than a fancy splash guard. That’s an ol bait and switch in my opinion. It’s looking more and more like the TRD package isn’t worth the money! I could put real skid plates and better suspension for the same price or better. Disappointing, but my fault because I never looked at everything before I signed the paperwork.

The value of the trd off road isn’t the skid plates and basic bilstein shocks. Neither of those things really cost much.

Besides a locking rear differential, shocks and stickers. What is the value of a TRD?

TRD Off Road and I have the same piece of plastic as a skid plate lol. I tossed it out and got myself the TRD Skid Plate instead...

Multi-Terrain Select, CRAWL Control, and Downhill Decent Control modes are only available on the TRD Off Road and TRD Pro models. The first time you use Toyota’s crawl control mode off road…you’ll never look at off roading the same way again. It’s really quite awesome.

I put the TRD skid plate on awhile ago. Worth it. If you can find a dealer with a good sale price then I would snag it. The Toyota parts site (parts.toyota.com) is still running free shipping on orders over $75. I got mine out of Redlands, CA and they shipped it FedEx ground for free with the promo code.

I almost edited my post to add the multi terrain, but I didn’t. I won’t get to experience multi terrain since I settled for the 2wd. Which means 2wd TRD’s aren’t worth the price? It doesn’t even have the locking rear differential, which all TRDs should.

I’ve thought about upgrading to the hybrid Max in 4wd when they start hitting the streets. We’ll see what they do in the real world

I ordered the leveling kit you used, since mine didn’t work. I’ll check out the skid plate as well. Thanks again for the heads up.

I read that the “skid plates” are some sort of hybrid durable plastic to protect the body from light damage. But even the Tacoma’s skid plates for TRD were thinner than a frying pan. Hopefully CBI or RCI will get some out soon WITH ACCESS plates. Taking off the whole skid plate for an oil change is no fun. BTW a Fumoto valve on your oil pan is amazing! Hook up the supplied hose, turn the valve, and the oil drains right into a milk jug making the process super easy when you have skids.

I’ve ran a valve on previous vehicles before and I agree. They’re a game changer for sure.
The factory skid plate doesn’t feel like it’s super cheap, but it’s just plastic. I’d probably compare it to the older Jeep’s family roll cage. It was only rated for one rollover. So it won’t withstand too much but I guess something is better than nothing.

Ahh. Gotcha. In addition to the stuff already mentioned, because of the suspension setup on the TRD Off Road models they also have an extra inch of ground clearance over the base 4WD models. Kinda similar to how the TRD Sport is a half inch lower than a standard Tundra since its suspension is supposed to be tuned for more of a “street rod” feel. I’m not entirely sure if that also applies to the 2WD TRD OR and TRD Sport packages.

Supposedly the 2WD models suspension are the same as 4WD. It’s just missing the 4x4 components. I knew the Sport sat lower for the Street Truck look and the Pro is taller with Fox.

I love my truck and I only have minor complaints. My only regret is not going 4wd, I was just too impatient to wait.

Trd off roads are the same height as the standard 4x4. But the trd sports are 1/2” lower in the front only.

you don’t get a lift until you get into the trd pro. And it’s mild like 1”.

You have a link/part # or anything? Went to that site and 22 but not able to put Tundra in the style. (like v3 does not exist to purchase stuff for it)
    Thanks

Just installed the TRD skidplate on my TRD OR. First, it was super easy. 2nd, the “skidplate” that was on there is a joke, a mouse could chew through it.

here’s some pictures. Took me literally 10-15 minutes, while having a beer under the truck.

    Looks great!

When it comes to oil changes, do you have access to the oil drain plug and the filter with the skid plate on? I’m probably going to put a Fumoto value w/ nipple and hose so getting the oil out is not an issue, but I would still need to get my hand it to remove the clip and activate the lever.

have to take the plate off, but that’s the dealers problem. Once out of warranty I’ll consider doing the service. Piece of cake though, just a light bench press up.

P/N for the TRD Skid Plate is PTR60-34220. You have to enter the P/N directly into search. You can't search based on model year yet. I tend to go to sparksparts.com and pull the p/n there...then price shop via the parts.toyota.com website. I can generally find it cheaper there once you consider Sparks high shipping pricing.

One thing I don't like about the TRD Skid plate is, it's pretty tucked under there so you can't easily see it

Yeah. It's a little bit of a bummer. Even with the front end 3" higher (Leveling kit + 34" tires)...you can't see it unless you bend down, unlike the 4Runner and the Taco skid plates. Also, I'm a little surprised they didn't design in a small access panel for the oil filter. Dropping the plate isn't hard, it's only 6 bolts, but it sure would be nice to not have to man handle an extra ~35 lbs every oil change. I don't know why Toyota didn't do that on this skid plate (like they do on so many others). Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Definitely with you on the no access panel. Weird, since they had it on later versions of last gen. Maybe they will release like a v2 of this plate.
I'm thinking of maybe adding spacers, maybe that will make the plate "show" a little better lol

I found the TRD one for under $400, but maybe I should wait until the market catches up. See what everyone else has to offer. I’m already thinking of getting a Burger Motorsports tuner anyway.

The 20min mark is why I buy Toyota. I drive a lot in 4L off roading and it’s SOLID!
