    Hi all,

I just picked up a 2007 TRD. Looks like it's been well cared for, with lots of maintenance receipts and a few mods. It has the 4.7 ... I was initially going to get the 5.7, but this one was a really good deal and in good condition, so I'm happy to have it.

I'm looking for info on what the towing package adds. In past threads, it seems like members advise to check for the Tow Haul button and a transmission cooler to determine whether it has the tow package. This truck does not have the Tow Haul button, but does have a transmission cooler. I'm wondering if maybe someone added the cooler on at some point? If it has the cooler, should it have the equivalent towing capacity as the official "tow package" 4.7, or is there anything else that would affect its capability? (Different gearing, etc). I'll be towing about a 4500lb (loaded) trailer through mountains a few times a year, so either way I'll still be well under, but it would be good to know, or whether it's worth considering any other mods (gearing etc.) down the road. When towing, I'll shift in manual mode, to prevent over-shifting of the transmission.

    Thanks!

The 4.7 is a bulletproof motor---don't forget the timing belt change every 100k miles or so.

And I would recommend a AIS delete kit (air injection system). Once the pump or valves go bad, you will check a check-engine light. If you repair to factory specs, it can cost a couple thousand dollars!

The AIS is actually a factory "hack" that pumps fresh air into the exhaust stream when the motor is warming up, to meet emissions standards at the tailpipe...so you don't need it. (Once warm the AIS is never used...)

Also three or four spill-and-fills on your transmission is the ticket to long life there.

The 4.0, 4.7 and 4.6 Tundras came standard with a 9.5" ring gear differential (5.7 has 10.5" size), and the non-tow package is geared at 3.9 ratio.

The tow package for the 9.5" rear ends lowered the gear ratio to 4.11, for slightly better pull, as the motor stays a bit higher in the torque curve.

The transmission coolers were standard on all Tundras up till around 2018/19.

Much appreciated ToolCat. The previous owner did the AIS delete kit, so all good there.

I reached out to Toyota Canada (it's a Canadian truck) with my VIN, and they sent me the original brochure and spec sheet. Turns out that all 2007 Tundras sold in Canada (with the 4.7 engine and the 5.7 engine) came standard with the towing package (see screenshots). I also checked my owner's manual, and it specifically says that if the truck has the transmission temperature gauge, it also has the towing package.

Sounds like maybe a different story south of the border (?), but for anyone with a 2007 Canadian Tundra, you can be sure it has the towing package.
