About $2k. Takes about a day to convert:

    1. Sell current truck.
    2. Buy new 4x4 truck, same age, same miles, same options.
    3. Go wheeling

best is to sell and buy 4x4 as advised here. Especially on a low miles 2018. You won't lose as much trading in plus it will be listed as 4x4 the day you decide to sell it..not like some joe schmuk conversion

I got it! Find someone who has the same year 4x4 that wants to convert it to a 2x4. There has to be some folks out there who would be interested.

It would be a win-win with just swapping parts.:notsure:

Of course it is cheaper and easier to sell and buy a 4wd.

But it’s going to cost you a hell of a lot more than 2k just be prepared.

I ran the numbers a while ago on mine.

My 2010 2wd is low miles, worth about 20k trade in

Similar year and mileage truck is listed at 25k.

Not quite. An open 4wd will climb hills that a locked 2wd can’t do.

And sand is really tough in 2wd.

A locker does help tho. The full rear locker is the only feature I miss about my Silverado. That was legit in a truck.

Unfortunately locker availability sucks for our trucks. An ARB is like 1300+ labor. Still cheaper than trading the truck in

It’s a good one. Adding a locker to a truck might be plenty for 90% of users.

I’m wrestling with the exact same decision myself

    The real answer is:

    1. Sell the Toyota engine/transmission/transfer case.

    2. Install an LS motor/transmission/transfer case and a standalone harness/ECU. The cost for cheap LS drive trains is somewhere around $20k installed. There might be some misc costs involved with making everything fit.

Those numbers don't include negotiating with the dealer. I would allow $1k cost to sell my trade and $1k dealer profit to sell me a truck but thats it. I am confident I could get a deal done with a net loss of around $2k.

    TRUE STORY:
Before I had my Tundra I was on vacation with some friends and I got my 2 wheel drive truck stuck in a sandy wash while leaving a swimming hole. One of the guys had just bough a brand new Tundra, Limited 5.7 but also 2 wheel drive. As he pulled up to me, as soon as he hit the brakes the sand swallowed his truck up to the frame. We were both dead in the water in 100 degree weather.

I called a tow truck and while waiting this single cab Tacoma (4wd) comes through and pulls both trucks right out of there no problem.

At that moment me and my fiance vowed if we ever buy a truck again it will always be 4 wheel drive, PERIOD.

Happy ending is a few months later I pulled the trigger on my beautiful SR5 TRD 4wheel drive Tundra. Never looked back. Totally worth the few extra payments.
