I have a 2013 crew max 4x4. We got alot of snow tonite. Had to use 4x4. Clicked it in, while driving I hear a clicking/taping noise that comes and goes depending on speed and how much I'm accelerating. So clicked it out and noise kinda fades out like something was slowing down from spinning. And their is also a kind of.... humming/really slight grinding noise. When I'm accelerating. Volume of noise depends on how much I'm accelerating. Is their a known issue in the 4x4. Or am I'm i F'ed.

Going to be taking it to my father in law shop next week to sr5 what we could find out. Just wanted to see if their was anything you guys knew about already. Thanks

Sounds like your traction control kicking in and out.

Traction control. I turn it off in snow when in 4 wheel mode. It's very annoying.

I agree with these guys ^^

Now if you were hearing a grinding noise and wheel spin was not happening, there are a few TSB’s that can be addressed.

does the gas peddle push back at you when this is happening, kind of like a vibration/pulsing? if so then it's definitely TC. turn TC off when you're in 4x4 and see what happens, the truck will respond better.

i drive like a madman in the snow compared to other, more conservative folk, but these trucks turn into a TANK when 4x4 is engaged and i trust it fully

I’m thinking u-joint failure on the front driveshaft since it fades out when you shift back to 2wd.

Traction control would get way more active in that situation IMHO.

Have the u-joints been greased regularly?

Is it normal for a a clunk sound to happen when engaging 4hi or 4lo? Only when initially engaged

Did you ever find out what the issue was? My wife’s 2011 sequoia is having a similar issue. I think it is because she has not been putting it into neutral before going into 4wd. It started making noises at freeway speeds when not in 4wd and it started to get worse. I am thinking it is an issue with the 4wd actuator (perhaps the alignment of the teeth). Last night I tried to put it into 4 hi then 4 low to see it would reset itself, but it just beeped and the 4 low light flashed and the car wouldn’t go into gear. After trying for a minute it turned the car off for about 5 minutes, started it against and this time when I cycled through 4hi and 4 low it wend back into gear. After taking it back out of 4wd I got onto the freeway again and the noise was still there and maybe even louder.
