Hello Everybody , We are new to Tundras.com so hopefully we don't make any mistakes here .
Has anyone had any experience with an intermittent ticking sound from a 5.7 liter 2017 Tundra ? We only hear it while at idle . We use 0-20 Mobile 1 and recently read a post on YouTube where switching to genuine Toyota 0-20 solved this issue . Have any of you run into this occasional ticking sound ?
Thank you for your time and any advise you can share with us .
    Respectfully ,
    Tom

The 5.7’s make a ticking noise. Almost diesel-like. If that’s what you’re hearing, don’t be alarmed.

Where do you live Tom? Regarding oil “genuine Toyota” is just Mobil 1. If you’re in a warm enough climate, you can run 5w-30 and be fine.

many guys and gals on here do that and say it resolves the ticking issue and they feel the “truck runs better”

It has a bit of a diesel sound when idling (4.6l does it too).

Thank you for answering our question . We live in the High Desert of Southern CA. so it seems like your suggestion to switch to 5-30 may be the right path .
We plan on picking up the new filter and oil next week and hopefully that will clean up this annoying tick-tick . (we'll let you know how it turns out)
    Thank you again !
    Best Regards ,
    Tom

Don’t be worried about the “tick” noise OP. Between many family members, friends, and myself, we have collectively owned and leased an absurd amount of Toyota’s since the late 1980’s. Simply put they ALL have had that tick especially the trucks. Some models worse than others. The new Highlander being the quietest (least pronounced) vs the 3.4 V6 being the worst. Personally it doesn’t bother me it the least…it’s in their DNA at this point, why? I have no idea…

What kind of tick? Is it worse on startup, then goes away after a minute or two? Or happens all the time?

Desert to me means colder winters. Definitely run the motor to operating temp or a couple of minutes before you drive off when temps drop on those colder winter nights. I’d keep it full synthetic. Mobil 1 5w30 should keep you in good shape.

welcome to the forum from Northern NY

A Big Thank You to 'All' that have answered our question about the 5.7 liter tick-tick noise . We are going to try changing the oil next week using 5-30W synthetic and hopefully that will do the trick .
We really enjoy our Tundra and having a Forum like this for advise only makes it All the better ! Thanks Again !! Tom

Welcome to the forum! 0w-20 is the oil used for gas mileage benefits not motor longevity. I run 5w-30 without any hesitation whatsoever. However, I would never regularly use 0w-20.

Sorry to hijack this thread...but, I am curious about this ticking noise at idle as well. And, for me it seems to be quite loud at idle for the first few minutes or so, on my truck. I have changed from 0W-20 to 5W-30 oil (Mobil 1 Full Synthetic) and have seen an improvement, but only for a short while after oil change (2 months or so). I only drive around 10k miles/year and do oil changes every 6 months. I have read on this site from quite a few others that this is normal and not to worry about it, but what is the actual source of this ticking for most of y'all? Cam tensioner? I have roughly 1 year left on an Extended Warranty, that covers nearly the entire vehicle, and I'd like to have it permanently repaired before my warranty expires, rather than just dealing with it for as long as I own the truck, which I plan on keeping for at least another 8-9 years. FYI, besides this issue, I've only had a bad fuel pump in the last 80K miles. Truck is well maintained and has been super reliable. Thanks everyone for any feedback!

I'd just start feeling/listening around your engine bay to start. Lifters can tick a little bit after a while, but usually that is a very clear tick when cold that clears up or gets quieter as oil pressure builds. Injectors can tick too. Doubt your timing chains or tensioners are worn after 80K miles, they're usually good for waaaay longer than that. Could be an exhaust leak too. A smoke test would reveal whether an exhaust leak is present anywhere.

You might want to try warming the engine, pour in a quart of automatic transmission fluid, let it idle for 20 minutes, then change the oil. If nothing else, you will have tried to a great way to clean it up and free up sticky lifters. You don't really have anything to lose.

I know ATF is a cleaner of sorts, but wouldn't a dedicated oil cleaner be better, like that ATS stuff? Scotty Kilmer seems to like it a lot

There's almost always more than one way to skin a cat. Doesn't matter what method, it matters that it gets skinned. Will some methods be "better" than others, I guess that depends on the interpretation of "better". I have had great results with ATF, that's all.

Drove a couple million miles in my life and only had one engine issue. Sort of took a chance and submerged a Ford 4.0 pushrod version in a river. Oops! Dragged it out, pulled the plugs, drained and refilled the crankcase, spun it a few times, installed the plugs, she fired right up. The bent rod knocked a bit, drove the dog piss out of it beyond redline for 'bout a week hoping to get a good laugh, damn thing wouldn't come undone! So, yes I have learned two extra things about internal combustion engines. 1. Periodic ATF flushing doesn't harm anything. 2. Keep the intake above the waterline!

I totally agree, I am just a bit hesitant to put chemicals not meant for engines or engine oil, within them. If it works, it works. May try that on my escape, see if I can free up the ticking lifter there.

We are happy to report that our 5.7 engine ticking noise is now gone ! The suggestion to change our oil from 0-20 to 5-30 was the correct solution ! Thanks to All that took the time to respond to our noise issue and share their knowledge and experience !
    Merry Christmas !
