The only thing I can think of is low oil pressure. Bad oil pump, not enough oil? Pick up maybe clogged?

Well, I'm not going to say it's a Royal Purple issue, but I'm not a fan after having spun a few bearings using it it some LSX motors. It would also beat out of the lifters at high RPM. Went back to Mobile 1 and no more issues.

Funny you say that. I had the same experience with RP, just with power steering, so quite a bit cheaper.

The power plant I’m at went to AMSoil on some gearboxes and went away from Mobil 1. All hell broke lose within 3 months. We drained that out and put Mobil 1 back in.

Funny you say that, ive owned 3 tundras. 1st one bought new,2004 tundra 4.7 liter. Put amsoil in at 5000 miles, truck now has 210,000 no burning of oil, or leaking. Changed oil once a year, or 24,000 mile. Second tundra, 2015 crewmax. Put 100,000 miles on it with no leaks, or burning of oil, changed oil once a year, or 24,000. New truck 2017 Tundra crewmax, only 15,000 miles so far no issues due to oil. Side note: had a 1999 Harley FLHR, 1st year for twin cam. This engine had several issues with cam bearings. Mine had 40,000 on amsoil and never had one issue with bearings, even when recall was performed, mechanic said hes never seen a 99 with so many miles and no cam bearing problems. So AMSOIL for me Jim

So once a year for oil and filter?

Dang, I wouldn't be able to go that long on an oil change. I literally wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Yes filter and a qt at 6 months or 12,000 miles whichever comes first, and change at 24000 or 12 months. No build up or burning of oil, and non of the trucks use oil, not even a qt in that duration. I used to change oil and filter every 3000 mile, not nessasary with Amsoil, they gaurantee it!

There was something on local radio couple weeks ago. Top ten most reliable vehicles in US. Toyota had five in there with sequoia being number one if I recall correctly. Moments after they had a caller from this area with a 2011 tundra, used for a business vehicle, claiming 411,000 and just routine maintenance.

A guy here in town does the maintenance on equipment at a machine shop. He said the royal purple roughly tripled the life between rebuilds or failures on some of the gearboxes on machines. I don't recall what he was using before that.

Personally I was running Mobil one for a while but now I'm running Valvoline at about half the cost of Mobil 1. 0w-20 at 10,000 mile intervals. It usually consumes about a half quart in that time. On two occasions mine has had blue smoke at start up. It cleared out after a minute. Seemed completely random and hasn't done it in a couple years. I guess I had forgot about it but it's still puzzling what caused it. Something with the PCV I guess. It's original. 165,000 on the clock, no leaks.

You can go to Amsoil website and they have all the test info somewhere on there. I, rather, went with info from local mechanics when i lived in oklahoma. They had a diesel semi (over the road truck) that had somewhere around 20 or 30 thousand on the amsoil, the pulled a smaple from truck and a sample from crude oil out of the bottle(cant remember brand pennzoil maybe?) The oil in engine was as good of shape and had more life left than the crude out of bottle. Also Amsoil has a program that if your manufacture tries to challenge you on there recomendations for oils change intervals, if there is a mechanical failure, they will fight them on it, and ultimatly pay your repairs, and go after the manufacture. Keep in mind i do know a little about vehicles and engines, i grew up in a auto family in flint michigan, my dad built v8 engines for Genral Motors, needlesss to say he wasent to happy when i bought my first Tundra in 2004! Please dont take my word for it do the research, it was hard for me to wait 12,000 miles for a filter on my first Amsoil change in 04. I actually didnt wait that long at first change, took me a while to trust the info. But now going on 3 Tundras, a Buick enclve, 99 roadking, west coast chopper, with a total of about 45000 miles i can tell you 12000 miles or 6 months with a filter and a qt, and a full change at 24000 or 12 months, i am very confident in amsoil products. Air cooled v twins i change every 12 months regardless.

I have some buddies that are AMSoil dealers, and some that run bypass systems. Pretty cool stuff. One has 70k miles on filter swaps and top offs (2 qts every time).

For me, oil is cheap, and I mean dirt cheap. Every 5k miles is no big deal. One spun bearing or damaged motor (especially diesel) and all the savings of extended drain intervals is gone. Even if a company “guarantees” the repairs, I’m still out of the game for a while.
Is AMSoil good stuff? I do believe so, and maybe some of the best. Hell, it was developed by a retired fighter pilot for the most extreme conditions (if I remember correctly).
I can find AMSoil with a little work in most cities, but I can find Mobil, Rotella T6, Castrol, Valvoline on any parts store or Walmart in the country rather easily.
By following the 5 or even 10k service intervals on our Tundras, this will outlast the truck.

So if I do chose AMSoil, at 7.50 per qt and 12.00 per filter in one year service:

    9qts x 7.50=68.50
    2 filters= 24.00
Grand total 91.50 per year (24k Miles) in oil changes if no oil analysis is done.

Buying Mobil 1 and Toyota filter
    34.32+4.00=38.32

76.64 per 20k miles and I keep receipts and no arguing with dealership or oil supplier why my motor failed.

Yep, personal choice, but there is a reason mobil one recomends 15000, and amsoil recomends 24000 with one filter at 6 months. Ive used both, and worked with heavy mechanics in michigan, again its a personal choice, just like buying a cheaper truck, or cheaper componets. Oil is the blood of your engine, so my choice will not change. Chances are if you use synthetic oil and change regularly engine will outlast the truck. I just like the piece of mind.

I am totally addicted to Tundra Life now!
Not to start a synthetic oil war but the only oil I will ever run in everything I own is Klotz Synthetics. I also own a boat shop and that is all I run through and convert customers over to is Klotz. Hands down IMO proven in my shop and personal life. I have it even in my Harbor Freight 80 Gallon Shop air compressor and Echo cs-440 chainsaw. Ive had the chainsaw now since 2002 Flawless and the compressor 3 years and counting and Ive read they blow up left and right. The day I bought it I did the break in with Klotz and that oil is still crystal clear to this day!

I run the Klotz Freegear in my lower units on boats now and its absolutely mind Blowing after 100 hrs it still looks new. #KlotzLifer

Do you do oil analysis sometime between the 24K miles? If not, that is a really big risk without much reward. I'm guessing you don't, or that cost goes way up per year.

I'm a little versed in heavy equipment/turbine operation/maintenance as well. Filtration and testing is vital to equipment. So If you don't send out samples on a scheduled interval, you're rolling the dice.

AMSoil is very good, and will never say that it isn't a top notch oil, just ask them, they will tell you all about it.:D

I like independent companies that tell me whats best.

I've used Klotz in my MX bikes for pre-mix. I was pretty impressed.

Talk is cheap, miles tell the real story! Pick whatever oil you find the most impresive research on, all compaines will tell you how great there oil is, read some ball bearing pressure tests sometime. Ill stick with miles. I would love to hear from those who have lots of miles on there vehicle and do not use any oil during the duration of the oil change. I know alot of guys, including dealerships who say using a qt of oil every 5000 miles is normal, i disagree, if you are burning oil, your engine is not running effecintly, or is not built to the tightest tolerences. Im done, everyone knows whats best, right?

I'm not arguing with you Jim. It wasn't Mobil 1 that put out that article, just data. I have read into ball bearing tests. Can't go wrong with AMSoil, just not easily available.

Oh my. Hopefully you are not dispersed by the fire. Looks like 35% containment for now.

I am 110 miles north of you in Colorado Springs Jim.

Does no one like Castrol Edge :pout: lol
Thats all I ever use in my Taco and I swear that thing has spent more time bouncing off the limiter than at normal operating rpms.
I would change the oil out fairly often though....bout every 5000km. Castrol used to guarantee to 25000km before oil degradation. I havent driven the taco in forever but she runs just fine.
As for the tundy, meh dealership still takes care of her.

Pennzoil Platinum and their 'ultra platonium' are starting to appeal to me. The whole oil from natural gas thing has to be legit!....?

It does seem to be popular at BITOG forum. That actually does give it some merit, for myself that is.

Totally unrelated to oil, but looks like the fire went up Mt Blanca. Do you have any information if this map is correct? Son of a Bitch I'm pissed. I haven't really kept up on the Spring Fire other than it was big, unstoppable for now.

This area has a special place for my Jeep crew (Jeeping/SF winter training grounds/Camping).

Well enjoy the views everyone. Last time we will see this beautiful area for a while.

My buddy spun a bearing in his 350Z running RP, I think it’s just over hyped garbage personally.
I’m a huge fan of Mobil 1, I’ve run mine up to 9100 miles and had it tested by Blackstone and it still tested better than the average at 6000 miles. 180k miles on my truck and not using any oil. And a interesting thing I found out from my service advisor at Toyota (friend from high school) yesterday is that the Toyota bulk oil they use is relabeled Mobil 1 and they sell it for a little over $3 a qt!
