So this isn’t Tundra related but Toyota/Lexus or jugs of oil. Yesterday I did an oil change in my wife’s Lexus NX300. It calls for 5.2 quarts of oil. The .2 is equal to 6.4 oz for reference. So I do the oil change with filter and pour a brand new 5 quart jugs of oil it the engine. Give it sometime and check the dipstick. It shows a little over half between the lower and upper dot. I think there is no way 6.4oz is going to get to the top dot. I end up pouring half a quart more to get to the upper dot. I waited a long time just to make sure and still in the upper dot, not over. So I began to think, is the dipstick wrong or are oil manuf not really filling up the jugs and are shorting us. I will be buying a accurate measuring bucket for shits to and giggles per day but I want to know if I am u fee filling or over filling my truck and suv. Because truth be told I just pour the right amount of oil according to what it takes and never measured with the dipstick. I always figured if I buy 5,6,etc quarts that it has the right amount in there.

FWIW, a day or two after my oil change the oil always reads a little higher on the dipstick.

I wouldn’t worry about it taking a few ounces over spec to reach the top dot.

Not really worried much about the amount of oil, weather it’s a bit low or high. But 1/2 a quart is quite a bit. I was just going to put the 5 quart jug and call it a day because the .2 (6.4oz) isn’t much but it was 1/2 quart low. So that’s why I was wonder if the dipstick is wrong or are jugs not filled right? My OCD does get the better of me sometimes though.

No. They have told me 3 times that they would call back and they still haven't.

It’s about twice as much as you were planning on intentionally leaving out. :notsure:

Did you run it to fill the filter? Not sure how many ounces a Lexus filter would hold.

My Honda Element would take almost 1/2 qt more oil if I elevated the front but not the rears. With the drain plug at the rear of the oil pan helped but 1/2 a quart more? I figured little pockets of oil that stay in the head for cold start top end lube must have drained somewhat.

In the grand scheme of it, I guess .5 isn’t much. But if the jugs are coming with less then that’s B/S if you ask me. But at the same time I at least prefer to be .2 than 1/2 a quart low. For .2 I wouldn’t buy an extra qt but for 1/2 yes.

My driveway has a slight elevation, so it could have drained more. So, if more came out then it takes more to fill back up. Thanks, always helps to have someone from the outside give ideas that one can forget about. Next time I will drain it on level ground. That includes the tundra since I do it on the driveway.

Did you take into account the loss you incur from the jug? The volume of oil you are sold, is then placed into an empty jug, some of that sticks to the sides of that jug when you dump it.

Next time for giggles. take the jug and upend it over a measuring cup for a few days. You'll get an ounce or 2 I'd bet. Yeah it sucks that we lose a tiny bit, but you lose less buying the big jug than than many smaller bottles.

So 5 quarts minus 2ish ounces, plus half a quart (8 ounces)... sounds like 5 quarts and 6ish ounces...

I was just rereading what I wrote... I was about to correct myself. You are right. 10 ounces seems a bit much to account for with adhesion.

But your point is well taken. My guess is the spec gets you somewhere between the two dots. I’d think it would take over spec to get to the high dot. When I was young it was a quart between low dot and high dot…
