FYSA. I run 5W30 for a few reasons. 1) too little fuel loss to notice, 2) better high film strength 3) stops Tundra tick.

Dealer approved as I asked because they have an engine for life warranty. I showed them owners manual stating higher viscocity can be used (and may be better suited) for high speed and extreme loads.

I also showed them page 56 of our Warranty Maintenence Guide stating 5W20 MINERAL oil can be used but must be changed every 5k or 6 months (they initially said you can't run non-synthetic). I run synthetic was an education opportunity.

I also had them pull up Toyota TIS on my 2020 Tundra and showed if I moved or lived in Mexico this trucks takes 5W30 - 15W40.

They agreed 5W30 is warranty compliant and Service Manager typed a letter with VIN, Date and approval and placed in my online Toyo file.

My point here is not to beat a dead horse, change any mind nor start and argument.

I plant a tree every tree day on Earth Day so I am good with .001 fuel economy loss to a tad better protection and quiter 5.7.

Same with the FJ and 4runner. They are only spec’d 0w-20 here in the US. Everywhere else its 5w-30. Exact same vehicle and drivetrain, except controls are on the wrong side.

I have my Toyota 0w-20 analyzed and it comes back good everytime, but I wouldnt hesitate to run 5w-30 synth.

Been running 5w-30 since doing my visit oil change at 10k miles on the odometer. I do the changes every 5k. No issues and it's nice knowing you're treating the engine a little better.

Totally agree. I hear and feel a tad tighter engine on 0w30 or 5w30. Could be in my head but I sleep better :)

I run 0w20 in the winter and switch to 5w30 for spring/summer months . Up here in Alberta our winters can get brutal cold so I want the 0W20 for best cold oil flow protection . 0W20 was introduced strictly to satisfy CAFE regulations . no other reasons imo

Warm your cold truck engine up for 3, 4, 5 minutes and *POOF* you're already at 5W oil before you take off and put load on the engine.

Correct. 30 weight is my liking.

I'm not a "car guy" although I do all my own maintenance (oil, brakes, suspension) and have taken the top of my landcruiser motor apart (took a while to put back together...). Just wanna make sure I understand it.

The 5/30 synthetic will make the 5.7 a little quieter and higher viscosity will stick to the insides better, which in turn, provides faster or better lubrication? Is my understanding correct?

Wow. That should shut up all the 0W-20 apologists. Tundra can run on pretty much any oil on the shelf, it seems.

Just kidding - they'll stop by soon and insist that you must run 0W-20!

Kevin. I am no tribologist by any means nor an oil expert. My understand is a 30 weight at running temp (150c/210F) causes a little more resistance. Hence a slight loss of fuel economy but not enough humans notice just labs.

It does quite my 2020 5.7 and many others will testify to that. 0W20 does zero harm to an engine unless under extreme conditions then maybe a tad more wear. Again I think a lab would be needed to notice.
My point in this was to show tolerences of the 5.7 have not been changed over the years for a 0w20 as some claim.

Autozone website sells me the same oil pump for a 2009 as my 2020.

Choose what makes you feel better. If you notice no diff in a 5w20 or 5w30 no harm no foul

You had me at higher film strength. (Oh, never mind, I already use Mobil1 EP 5W30.) :D

Congrats on selling the obvious to the dealer's Service Manager.

Last time at the dealer I told them M1 5-30. SA called me an hour later and told me the head service tech said it would ruin my engine because of the tight tolerances. LOL! Not feeling like arguing and knowing the difference is likely very small I said...what ever just get it done. Took the truck back today and said M1 5-30 I don't care what the tech says. There is a difference. Its smoother, quieter, and i swear I got better mileage using the M1 5-30. I will be able to confirm that now. Or not.

Cue the naysayers! But but but the engines in Mexico are different and have looser tolerances. But it's hotter in Mexico so...

Modern oil is just amazing compared to what we called oil in the 1970-80s. The common wisdom with modern oil in modern engines is run the good quality oil that gives you the oil pressure you need to keep oil moving and in temperature spec. On the motors I build I run a thinner oil that gives me the oil pressure needed to lubricate the parts. Too high oil pressure causes wear on bearing surfaces as does too low, but with todays awesome synthetic oil I worry first about oil pressure and not the specific weight.

If you want to lose a couple of hours of your life down an informative rabbit hole, go here: https://bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/ and read all the chapters. I did that about 10 years ago and realized a lots of knowledge I gained turning wrenches in my younger years was either wrong or simply outdated.

    YMMV, literally. ;^)

I like 5-30 too especially the one for engines with over 75K and long life oils (10-20K OCI designed), though I can't bring myself to go any further than 5k sometimes 7K yet no further and probably the oil is still good for say a lawn mower or other small engine! Now if I could find 0-40 for over 75K would be an interesting choice.
