6 speed to 8 speed conversion

Has anyone completed or contemplated swapping an 8 speed transmission from 2016 Land Cruiser into a 3rd Gen Tundra with a 6 Speed? What all would be involved? I'm sure it would bolt up and may need to lengthen the drives shaft but wasn't sure about any additional mods.

 

Mechanical fit might be the least of the concerns. Transmission electronic control compatibility might be the biggest hurdle.

 

I think the trans ECU is in the transmission... might not be an issue.. Same engine with same connector shouldn't be an issue...

Example my celica has 2 engine variations with 2 different automatic transmissions which are shared with the Corolla, Matrix and Pontiac Vibe with 1 that cant be crossed over but the manuals can be cross platformed..

 

As long as the TCM firmware is compatible with the vehicle weight, differential ratios, tow haul, etc..

 

Yes, I agree odds are they may be very similar in weight and gearing as its is easier to do 1 math equation than 5.... mass production advantage, atleast that's what I would think with cost savings and parts bin availability.. 3.90:1 gearing on the 8spd attached some more info for compare and contrast..

I’m sure it can be done, I mean you’ve got guys throwing new 3.5l Toyota motors in 2nd gen mr2s with some wiring.

you will likely need a land cruiser ecu (I’m pretty sure the trans control on the tundra is in the ecu, not sure on the land cruiser but likely the same) and body side of the ECU will need to be re pinned likely. Not a super hard task, but very time consuming, you will also likely need a land cruiser engine/trans harness.
